Absorbing the Word

Its homecoming weekend here in my small Mid-Michigan town.

Football.

Hot cider.

Bonfires.

Crisp air.

Crazy kids donned in red & black. (My own 13 year-old son and two of his friends were plotting just last night about face-painting and—gasp chest-painting!)

They may change their minds on the chest-painting when they see the forecast for game time. Rainy and in the 40’s.

Now that is crisp air.

After running carpool this morning, I swung by town to grab a cup of my favorite coffee. Then, I’ll be ready to tackle my day which includes some school for our 16 year-old (who is homeschooled) and office work as well as running a relative to a doctor’s appointment.

When a busy day ensues, it always helps if first I’ve carved out a bit of time to center myself on God and His word, the Bible.

Thankfully, my Good Morning Girls group helps me to do this. Three friends and I, all from different states, check in with each other via email once we’ve had are alone time with God. It can be in the morning, afternoon or even at night once the house is finally quiet.

I want to help you to spend some time reading and absorbing God’s word too!. So, I’m giving away a copy of our Proverbs 31 devotional book God’s Purpose for Every Woman along with a bag of Starbucks cinnamon coffee.

Simply leave a comment telling us your favorite story, verse or concept from the Bible. If you’ve never read the Bible before, that is completely fine. Tell us instead why you never have or why you’d like to give it a try.

Winner announced Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. One of my favorite verses is Lamentations 3:22-23 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions (plural see!) never fail, they are new every morning…” So many times when life is getting the best of me, I rest in this verse and know that tomorrow will be better.

There is a story in the gospels about a man saying to Jesus “if you are willing, You will heal me”. Long ago as a teenager I had quite spontaneously prayed using those words to God when I was having a lot of physical pain in my stomach for a while. So one night, I prayed those words and like that I was healed immediately. Never came back. Wow.

  2. I love the story of how God used Esther for a specific purpose and a specific time to save his beloved people ! And through her courage and faithful submission came another redeemer… Jesus Christ!! Im blown away by this.. How each moment and circumstance comes together For A Purpose.

  3. Since I just came back from helping my eldest sister recooperate from knee replacement surgery, Phil. 4:13 is uppermost in my mind. I am praying continually, that verse, for her. She needs so much help from her creator right now to persevere through the Physical Therapy. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Julie Maxwell

  4. I am stuck spiritually right now going through various trials and feeling defeated. I don’t know the reference but the verse is great is Thy faithfulness Thy mercies are new each day. I need alot of mercy right now~

    1. It’s my favorite verse!….Lamentations 3:22-23. I too have relied on this verse so much when I’m overwhelmed in life. I hope you will be encouraged, God loves you very much.

  5. A new devotional and Cinnamon coffee!! Wow. As a former Awana leader John 3:16 comes to mind “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life”. It humbles me to think that God, the creator of the Universe, loves me so much that He sent His son to die for me. A gift not earned but freely given.

  6. Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or van conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

We are treat others as Jesus has treated us and how he lived! We are not to judge others or condemn others! We are to love each other! 1 Cornithians 13! We are to always treat others with respect! Lots of love!

  7. My favorite verse is Romans 12:2 =

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  8. Wow, so many good replies! Right now, I am studying the promises of God. It’s so amazing that you can take a verse and stand on it for comfort or assurance, or whatever your need is at the time. I am taking photos that I have shot and putting a verse with it. I’m not sure what God’s plan/purpose is for them at this point, maybe its just for me. They sure are speaking to me! I suppose a favorite right now is, ” I will be the voice behind you, guiding you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 30:21
    Thanks for the give away.
May God continue to use you and bless you,
    Sally

  9. Oh my goodness. Ask for my favorite child next time!

I would have to say it is one of the following:

Luke 1:45 (reminds me that I am blessed and God has promised me many things that he will not forget to provide)
Philippians 4:8 (my most used weapon verse)
Philippians 4:13 (makes my heart calm)
2 Corinthians 3:3-6 (which is speaking to me loudly this week!)

  10. Isaiah 43:2 – When I was going through radiation for breast cancer, I said this verse everyday before my time with the machine. At the end of my treatments my doctor commented about how very little I had burned. I explained to him that it was this verse that kept me.

  11. My favorite verse is 1 Corinthians 2: 9… However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”–

  12. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I sure can’t do it all; but when I take time to ask for His direction and help in my life it goes well. I need my Word and my coffee to start the day on the right foot. Thank you!

  13. For I know the plans, I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
This is one of many verses that I love, but this verse was given to me when I was going through a very hard time in my life, when my life had been turned upside down and it was good to know that God had a plan and he knew the big picture!

  14. Esther 4:14 “For maybe you were made to be queen for such a time as this.” As women we are all someone’s mother, daughter, sister, wife, aunt, grandmother, friend, or teacher, etc. It really makes you think about how you live each day of your life. We all have been put here in this time and place to make a difference in someone else’s life.
    Blessings,
    Linda

  15. Romans 12:2 (NLT) – “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

I was mad at God for a very long time with regard to my infertility. I thought I must have made some egregious error in my past for Him to deny me children. Through a series of God-events, I found my way back to Him and realize that He has a plan for my life that doesn’t include children. When my pastor referenced this verse in church at the beginning of my faith journey, I nearly burst into tears. It has continued to be my life verse and it inspires me every single day to not conform to everyone else, but be who God designed me to be. If you like, you can read more at my church’s women’s ministry blog. I posted my brief story this past summer before I was baptized.

Thank you for the chance to win (and for letting me share!)
    Jennifer

  16. My life verse is Isaiah 55: 8 & 9

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

This verse changed my life in the late 80’s as a single women in her late 20’s I so wanted a realtionship I was in to work. Sitting alone in my apt., I turned on the local Christian radio station and heard the pastor quoting this verse, it was if a light bulb went on. It was like God’s voice coming throught the airways. And sure enough God’s ways are far better than mine, shortly after, I was blessed with an amazing Christian man who I am still married to. When I struggle to ask why something is not going my way….I grab on to my life verse.

  17. Oh wow… there is so many to choose from…

Jeremiah 29:11- For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope…

This verse means so much… Back in Dec of 1995 my dad had a brain stem stroke leaving him unable to take care of himself and needing 24 medical care .. so from then til July 27, 2010 he was in a long term care facility….
On July 27, 2010 , my dad’s heart gave out after 14-1/2 years …. That night he went Home to be with his Savior and Heavenly Father…
God has used this verse so many times over that time and even now since his passing..
Reminding me that through all those difficult times and now in the grieving.. this was in His plan even thought it was not always easy to see……
He brings it to mind alot now when I am really missing my dad… we were very close and I miss him so much….
I know that this was a favorite of his too..

  18. Everytime I feel like I’ve blown it or having a low moment of belief in myself, I remember 2 Timothy 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that Day. So even if I’m feeling weak and like just throwing my hands up I realize He is the strong one and has me in His safe-keeping until the very end and I can relax, take a deep breath and know that I am in good hands!

  19. Bible Verse as for me and my house we will serve the lord. Joshua was a man og great confidence in the lord and had no fear because he had complete trust in God. Joshua always prayed before a battle when fighting for the new Land And God helped his army to win. When he did not pray His army kost the battle because he lsft God out.Josua is the perfect example of a confident heart and He did not fear because he knew God was with him. H had Quit time with God to. I love this story of strength , confidence and his great faith in God.Joshua is my most favorite part of the bible.

  20. My favorite verse and reminder is Ephesians 3:20. It reminds me that no matter how big my asks are, or huge my thinking is, God can do abundantly BEYOND all of that!

This verse came as a reminder as I worked as a Nursery Coordinator a few years back. We were trying to raise funds to be able to remodel a much needed Nursery! After several weeks of praying for the funds to come through, the woman I was working with said, “Christi, I just don’t see this happening! I’m feeling very defeated. There’s no way that we can what is needed with the minimal funds that we have raised.” We began to pray again, and God reminded me of this scripture, and I said to her “No matter what WE are praying for, we have to remember that He is ABLE to do abundantly BEYOND all that WE are thinking! We have to believe that!”

It wasn’t a week later, and an anonymous donation came in for $3,000!!!! We were able to do even MORE than we had ever dreamed for our Nursery! It was beautiful!!! All because of Him!!
