Today, meet my friend Lynn Cowell:

Lynn is an author and speaker with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Her study for teen girls “His Revolutionary Love” empowers girls with self-esteem and confidence leading them to wise decisions.

One of her favorite Christmas traditions is to fill her kitchen with teen girls and teach them to make Christmas treats. It’s a mess but they sure do have fun!

Today on her blog, Lynn will share her favorite ways to invest in her kids with the gift of time. Please stop by; share how you invest in your kids and hear how other moms do as well!

Her Christmas memory:

By today’s standards, I come from a huge family; I’m number seven of eight kids.

For as long as I can remember, my family has had a five man toboggan that we’d strap it to the top of our station wagon.

Now in Iowa, you’ve got to be pretty creative when it comes to finding a spot to sled; corn fields produce much of a thrill!

We did have a couple of good hills that brought some winter fun. My favorite memory of sledding was my last memory of sledding.

My father had been diagnosised with cancer and had been fighting the disease for a long time. As we all pulled on all our gear, we were shocked to see Dad pull on his tan Carthartt jacket.

Mom was none too happy to see him heading out, but I know that my dad saw it for what it was; his last opportunity to celebrate Christmas this way with his family.

I have no idea what my parents gave me that Christmas, but I do remember this one thing. My father gave me the investment of his time and his sense of adventure even when he was fighting for his life.

  1. I love riding around, looking at store displays and lights/decorations on houses… But, every year, we make a point to load up the SUV with my three grandsons and their parents (and whoever else will fit) and ride to Tanglewood Park, NC… they have a beautiful light display to ride through and an area with a bonfire, where you can buy/roast marshmellows and sip hot chocolate or hot cider…. They also have a little train for the guys to ride!! It is so much for to see the looks on all their little faces as they are bedazzled by these displays!

  3. it used to be sledding, when we lived in good ol’ Indiana!!! Last year it was Go Carting:) We live in Florida, no snow here, just sand…..my kids got a GO Cart last year for Christmas and boy did they ride that till dusk:)

  4. I am disabled with severe back problems but, i just love being out in the snow. Did you know that if you go out late at night when most everyone is sleeping and traffic is at a minimum that you can actually hear the snowflakes touching your hat, coat and things around you as they fall? I love the wonder of the snow, how every snowflake is different like each one of us is different and the way it sparkles like diamonds when the sun shines on it. To me it looks like God has dusted the world with powdered sugar. God makes such amazing stuff!

PS. I used to love making snow angels until about 6 or 7 years ago when i got stuck in the snow and my son had to help me up so i didn’t wreck my angel! He told me, “mom don’t do that again”. Yeah right LOL! Winter is a great time for the adult in us to give way to the kid in us once again!

  5. Hot cocoa’ and we love to sled, we have a hill and usually tons of snow, and build a fire and make smores and just enjoy the outdoors.

  6. I enjoy getting in the crowds for shopping. I have a tradition that I picked up watching my parents and to this day I go out on Christmas Eve and get the things I need to stuff the stockings for my husband and boys.

  7. Yes, the gift of time is very precious!!! Unfortunately there are still certain issues, that keep me from just enjoying making memories with my kids……..way to uptight inside. Hoping and praying that the Lord will reach down and heal my heart in that area!!!

  8. We always try to go Christmas caroling with friends from our church. We try to go to those who can no longer attend our church. We usually end up being so blessed by them!

  9. I live in the south, so we don’t usually have snow at Christmas to go outside and play in. One of my favorite Christmas memories is the year that my family and some of our close friends to a hayride thru McAdenville, NC….aka “Christmas Town USA”. My dad hitched a trailor to the back of his truck and the rest of us rode thru McAdenville on the trailor. We had the best time looking at the lights and sipping on “hot cocoa”.

  10. We always cut our own tree then went toboggoning
cant even find one any more and don’t always get up for the tree in time
but going to the mountains with family (even after the actual holiday ) still makes a memory
