Has it been more challenging lately to find your smile?

I remember a day when my son came home from first grade, long-faced, dragging his backpack behind him.

“How was your day?” I asked.

“It was so boring, boring, boring,” he replied. “I didn’t learn anything new. I played the same old games at recess. It was boring.”

I had to chuckle. If my first grader thinks recess is boring, what’s he going to think of college lectures or a full-time job? I launched into my best motivational mom speech about how we are the ones who bring the action. “If you’re bored (you know what comes next), it’s your own fault.”

I realized that day that marriage can be a lot like that. We can whine, complain, and fuss about the dull routine of married life. Doing the same thing every day and going apparently nowhere. Inwardly or out loud, we sigh, “I’m bored.”

But I have good news for you. Marriage doesn’t have to be like that. And it’s up to us to bring the action.

You can enjoy new passion and purpose in your very important job as wife. Don’t wait around for your husband to fix things for you. Be proactive to grow in your marriage.

Plan a date to a new restaurant.

Try a new activity together like kayaking, dancing, or photography.

Have a candlelight dinner at home.

Journal about five things you value in your spouse.

Take the words “I’m bored” out of your vocabulary. Realize the blahs come to everyone. Those who have happy marriages learn how to keep boredom at bay by constantly growing.

  1. My husband is always thinking of ways to make me happy. He works so hard at his job (he works 12 hour days doing shift work- some days, some nights) and never complains. On his scarce days off, he is always out working in the yard trying to make everything look pretty for me! If I’m running short on time in the morning, he will make the beds or do whatever needs to be done without me having to ask. He is constantly making me laugh as he is one goofy guy! He always puts me first and is extremely thoughtful. He tells me and shows me all day that he loves me. He’s pretty awesome!

  2. My husband throws in laundry w/o complaint! A special thing that he does on some Sat. and/or Sunday mornings (not every but sometimes:) is to make me coffee and toast & bring it to me in bed! On those special mornings he usually lets me sleep in and makes sure the kids have eaten and are quietly playing or watching a movie so I can sleep or eat in peace:) Those mornings are my favorite and it makes me feel so special and like he cares about me. These days our marriage has had some very rough waters so it’s more rare to have this happen but when he does it means even more than it used too. Thanks for the give away & for letting me share! I would love to be happier and more content. I do strive with God’s help to be, but I would love to read this book in addition to God’s Word. Blessings!

  3. My husband has blessed my life in so many ways. He jumped into the role of stepfather and has exceeded my expectations. He always does the right thing and is truly a man of God. He leads our family by example with patience and love and shows my children what the love of a father means. When my youngest son made some bad choices before prom, he showed incredible patience, grace, wisdom and love. He is the love of my life and I believe our precious Lord chose him just for me and my children.

  4. My husband is amazing. He is my polar opposite. He is calm, and rational. He can fix anything (i look at it i’m not even sure what i’m looking at, but he knows). We compliment each other. He keeps me grounded. He keeps me from letting my imagination get away from me and panicking over nothing. He helps keep me focused, and relaxed.

And then on top of that, he is an amazing father to our children.

I have no idea what our family would do without him. I have no idea what I would do without him.

  5. My husband listens to me when I experience the frustrations of life. Then he tries to calm me by helping me see my problems from a different angle. He also inspires me to be more active by suggesting fun physical things to do together, like bike riding or playing golf.

  6. About to celebrate our 11th anniversary…..my husband works extremely hard to provide for our family and without question I know he will be there for me. He makes me smile and laugh and holds me tight when life gets messy and hard.

  7. My husband has such a kind compassionate heart. He often treats down-on-their-luck strangers that he comes across to meals and conversation and was so helpful when our cousin was dying from brain cancer. I wish I could be a better wife to him!

  8. My husband is so kind and thoughtful. Just today I was gone all day and he had dinner on the table when I got home And this is still after 46 years of marriage. I love that man.

  9. Having been married 44 years, not all have been wonderful but the past 31 have been strengthened by our love for the Lord. My hubby has always encouraged me to do what God is telling me to do and then standing by me. His compassionate heart also helped me take care of my Dad who lived with us for 10 years. No we are facing retirement and another chance to spend more time together!

  10. He works so hard for our family. He’s always there for support and to remind we of why we do the things we do. He can build and fix just about anything. He is so very loving and he keeps coming up with new ways of spending time with our 2 year old daughter. And he’d humble too!

  11. …after the kids are tucked in bed each night, we cherish our mini-date nights on our living room sofa together… (and he is always able to open those impossible pickle jars for me :) !!) …he.loves.me!!!

  12. My hubby allows me the opportunity and blessing to stay home with our two little boys. He excepts the crazy in me and loves me. My hubby is a true blessing!

  13. My husband is not demanding of me – he knows i will get to things and he can be very patient when all is going “crazy”.

  14. My husband is the most wonderful man I know. We have been married for 28 wonderful years, and have three children. When my daddy died 18 years ago, Jay was talking to my mom about what she missed most about him. Of course the companionship, the love, the sharing of mealtime, etc, came into conversation. But my mom looked up at Jay with tears in her eyes and said, “…For 42 years, Bennie brought me coffee in bed everymorning to wake me up. Now I have to make my own coffee!” From that day until now, Jay has brought ME coffee in bed to wake me up every morning! It’s the little things that count! I love that man!!!!

  15. My husband is a hard worker, faithful and graceful husband, and still makes me laugh after all these years.

  16. We will celebrate 23 years on June 8. He loves the
Lord, me & the kids, and others. He always enjoys being with us no matter what. He is all of the things mentioned in the above comments and more! I love him so much. He also cleans the bathrooms…my least favorite job. ????

  17. My husband listens to the Holy Spirit. You may think, ‘well, that’s too simple’. But it’s a really big deal! I can’t imagine surviving marriage without the Holy Spirit. When we argue, (oh, wait, I just admitted we do that), we don’t have to prove our point. We just have to stop talking enough to the hear the Spirit convicting me of those words I just said. We’re usually BOTH wrong. :-)

  18. I have a wonderful husband, I have been with him longer then I have been alone This year 31 years, and I still love him so much He makes me smile, and laugh! But with his job he is gone a lot, but we try to make the best of our time when he is home. This is the only reason that I like cell phones & texting We may not always be able to be together, ” ” but we can, by phone!

  19. My hubby is wonderful because he is my opposite! He’s silly and goofy and he jumps in at the right time when my serious and critical self is about to meltdown! I love his carefree, yet responsible way!

  20. My husband is an amazing family man – I love his devotion to keeping our family strong. Some days our differences are a struggle, but we find ways to keep our marriage strong.

  21. I am so grateful for my Godly husband. He is truly a gift to me. Unconditional love and support for what I do. He surprises me with thoughtful little gifts and is an AMAZING listener!

  22. He truly loves me as Christ loves the church with unconditional, sacrificial love. Even when I’ve been most undeserving, He has loved me in a powerful way.
