Blind Like John

Note: You Weight Loss Wednesday gals, don’t forget to check in with us on Wednesday…even if you blew it this week, okay? There will be a small incentive giveaway and lots of encouragement and newcomers are always welcome! See you then!

I sat across from him yesterday at the quaint country church potluck. Todd, Spencer and I were visiting a church in a small nearby town for the morning. This loving church was putting on a special service and dinner for a friend of ours who is on the waiting list to receive a kidney transplant and a new lease on life.

The service was sweet. The dinner afterwards delightful. But hands down, my favorite part was meeting John.

John is a young twenty-something man with a gregarious and outgoing personality who has been blind from birth. He needs help to get around. He needs help knowing who is sitting in the Sunday School classroom so he can greet each of them. Why he even needed help getting pumpkin pie from the desert table–”with LOTS of whipped cream, please!”

John is a little partial to whip cream.

Yes, John, being blind, needs lots of help physically.

However, he helped me yesterday.

When discussing matters of people and relationships and the like, John piped up, “Oh, when it comes to deciding who I like, I never go by looks. I can’t you know….since well, if you haven’t noticed, I’m blind.”

After a brief chuckle I asked him what did he go by then.

He said, “I listen to people’s voices. You know, what they say. Then I go by if they really do what they say; if they treat others kindly; if they are genuine. Doesn’t matter what they look like. I just wish others did the same with me, but they don’t. But hey, its all cool. I am going to just trust God with relationships. I want people to like me for who I really am anyway, not because of my outsides. That is how I like people. I have no choice.”

Oh ladies…when it comes to relationships, to choosing friends, admiring people we know or looking up to the famous, may we all be blind like John.

“The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7

Have a great week!
