2nd Day of Christmas Giveaway with….Lynn Cowell
Here we are on the second day of Christmas. (If you are just joining us, click here to get caught up.) Today, you get to meet a newer member of the Proverbs 31 speaking team, the gracious and gorgeous Lynn Cowell. I loved Lynn from the moment I met her. She is eager, enthusiastic and longs to connect with God, with teens, and also to see moms connect their hearts to their kids. As a speaker and writer, Lynn loves seeing eyes light up with understanding as she shares truth which leads others to completion in Christ. Her passion is seeing others “get it” – that spark of something new beginning in another person’s heart, taking them to a place of unconditional love, of significance and of incredible value.
Lynn’s desire is for every person she encounters to “get” that Jesus wants you – He is that into you! Her desire is to help move people to a place where they begin to pursue Jesus for themselves. One way that she does this is through her blog at www.LynnCowell.com.
Lynn is an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying white water rafting, hiking, rugby, softball…anything you can do outside! Her favorite people to do that with are her husband of over 22 years and her three children. They make their home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her favorite way to end the day is settling down with a great story in her favorite Appalachian State sweatshirt.
Lynn, can you share a Christmas tradition your family has enjoyed over the years? Our family loves to go to the mountains and cut down our Christmas tree. It is a very special time when just the five of us begin our Christmas season spending time together in a place we love. It really is one of our highlights. We also love making chocolate covered peanut butter balls. My husband, son, two daughters and I gather in the kitchen and create a peanut butter lover’s (that’s me) dream! Our batch is so big, twice we have burned out our mixer! One year, my husband simply went to the garage, put the mixing tool in his power drill and away he went!
How do you intentionally focus on Christ in the midst of all the flurry of activities that happen in December?
When my kids were small, I purchased a cardboard book with 24 cardboard ornaments. Each one is actually a little book telling part of the Christmas story. Even though my kids are all teens now, I still like to read the little books and each day reflect on the season and His amazing gift!
What are some of your favorite Christmastime foods? Any recipe you might share with us?
When I was growing up, my family had a tradition of having oyster stew for Christmas Eve. Now I really did not like the taste of those gritty little things in my mouth as a kid and I still don’t like them today! So, at my house, I switched to a different seafood soup: She Crab Soup. Now that I live in the South, it is the perfect warm treat that we look forward to! Emeril helps me with this one:
She Crab Soup
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 2 small onions, grated
- 6 ribs of celery, grated
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- Salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon mace
- 1 quart whole milk
- 1 cup cream
- 1 tablespoon Crystal hot sauce
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 pounds crab meat, picked over for cartilage
- 1/2 cup cooking sherry
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley
Directions
In the top of a double-boiler, melt the butter and flour together. Cook the mixture for 3-4 minutes for a blond roux. Stir in the onions, celery, and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, and mace. Cook the vegetables for 2 minutes. Whisk in the milk, cream, hot sauce, and Worcestershire. Bring the liquid up to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer the soup for 15 minutes. Stir in the crab meat and continue simmering for 10-15 minutes. Re-season if necessary. Sprinkle the chopped eggs in the bottom of each bowl. Ladle the soup into each bowl. Drizzle the soup with the sherry. Garnish with chopped parsley.
Mmmm…sounds delicious! Now, you are offering a great giveaway to one of our readers. Can you tell us about it?
The gift I am giving is one of my favorite talks “Building a Bridge to Your Child’s Heart”. Christmas time affords us opportunities like no other season to reach out to our child in special ways when their hearts may be especially tender. When you look at your relationship with your child, do you often wish it was more? More open, more honest, more influential? From having three teens, with much trials and errors, I have learned some keys to having a closer relationship with my children that I would love to share with you. I show you:
• How to connect your heart to theirs
• How to relate to a constantly changing generation
• How to be vulnerable without telling it all
• How to safely let go of your child
• How to help them make their faith their own
Thank so much for dropping by, Lynn!!!
Okay gals….leave a comment answering any of the above holiday questions that Lynn shared about, or simply say, “I’m in!” You may just be the winner of this great teaching CD!
AND NOTE: Weight Loss Wednesday gals– these next two Wednesdays the 12 Days of Christmas giveaway will be running but we”ll still have our own regular WLW post so we can check in. Just scroll past the giveaway post and the WLW one will be beneath it. See you then!!!
Second Day of Christmas Blessings,

A favorite Christmas time drink is apple cider perked with cinnamon sticks, red hots, and cloves.
I try to connect my heart to theirs by studying them, seeing what makes them tick, and capitalizing on it. My oldest loves for me to play games with him – esp. puzzles. My middle loves to cuddle. My youngest, just likes to keep me near.
In addition, I make it a point to surprise them with special treats such as a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Dinner. That was interesting…
Lynn is a sweetheart! I connected with her through her blog probably in the Spring of 2008. When I attended “She Speaks” in 2008, Lynn was one of the first gals I met at the Blogger Reception. She visited with me throughout that session and then sat with me while we attended Zoe’s, “Dare to be Dangerous”. Being shy and nervous, she will never know how her gift of friendship ministered to my heart.
We also have that book with cardboard book tree ornaments. It is a special tradition at our home as well.
Blessings to you today,
Joy

Two of my four children are teens and boy am I struggling! Your book sounds so needed. I so want to make the most of this precious time I have left with them but I feel I often fall short of connecting with them on a heart level. I hope this Christmas will be especially meaningful to them and my husband and I as we face our hard times and disappointments together and find joy in the journey. God is still in control and He has a plan for each of us and I will choose to trust in Him. Thanks for this post giving us a glimpse into your family and your Christmas traditions!
2nd day of Christmas – I’m in! The She Crab Soup sounds pretty good. I might have to try that one.
I love hearing all of the different family traditions each day. Thanks!
I’m in!! Pick me!!
I’m in!! Thanks for sharing.
Some of our Christmas traditions include cutting down a tree, decorating sugar cookies, and my three daughters get to open one package on Christmas Eve (always new PJ’s) and then they wear them to the midnight Christmas Eve service at our church. We also have baby Jesus hidden somewhere in the house on Christmas morning and we have to find him before we can open gifts.
Peanut Butter Balls is my favorite Christmas treat.
Our family tradition is going to the mountains to cut down a Christmas tree. The kids love it!
I love hearing these Christmas time traditions…I don’t know if I have ever had a peanut butter ball, but chocolate and peanut butter are my favorite things!
Christmas Eve we attend a church service and the kids get to open one present (new pjs)…isn’t it funny how many of us do that?
Happy Holiday Season to All

My favorite pastime and favorite food are combined into one. As a kid we would always make caramel taffy with grandpa on Christmas Eve.
We do the pjs on Christmas Eve, too. We always have rolls or a coffee cake for breakfast on Christmas day, put a candle in it, and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. =)

I’m in!! :0) One holiday tradition in our family is that we gather together at my mom’s house on Christmas Eve. Since my daddy passed away in 2006 each one of us lights a candle in his memory. It is truly a beautiful and heartfelt moment.
Love the peanut butter balls too, my mom always makes them for us!
Love peanut butter balls. That sounds just like something my husband would do!
ooooooooooo, I love peanut butter balls–maybe you can share that recipe too. I LOVE them!
I’m in! Peanut Butter Balls are a must have in my family, too!
I’m realizing more and more how my kids and husband LOVE when I cook for them, and make special treats. Luckily, I enjoy doing it most of the time, and there are so many Christmas goodies, it’s hard to pick a favorite. We always make peanut butter blossoms, a tradition my aunt started with me as a young girl.
Sorry! No traditions or recipies to share. : (
But sure would appreciate being entered into the giveaway today. Thanks.

I’m In. I love a sherbert punch my nanny made as a child at Christmas every year. It is ginger ale with lime sherbert in it. Something about it just is so comforting every year.
Love the peanut butter balls, too. I’m in!
We love to make buckeyes for Christmas. And monster cookies. YUM!

This book sounds great Lynn and much needed. Both of my sons are going through different stages right now and I am praying to God for direction from God on how to be there and minister to them both. Thank you for sharing Lynn & God Bless you both. (Karen) I’m in!
The soup sounds great! I too am struggling with my 19 yr. old boy….tough years! Thanks for the info!
I think the toughest time of raising children is between 17-30 years of age. Hang in there.
My favorite Christmas treat is fudge – it’s dangerous! Thank heavens it’s pretty much limited to Christmas around my house!
I love to make caramel, fudge and buckeyes, too! The kiddos love making sugar cookies with their dad, too. He just loves sugar, any way he can get it! I try to have some kind of pastry for breakfast while the ham is outside smoking! Makes me hungry just thinking of it!
We do a lot of baking at Christmas, but nothing takes the place of my Grandmother’s homemade butter mints. They are always made on a marble slab outside in a temperature that has to be below freezing. I’ve only done them twice myself, but I intend to continue that tradition she began long ago!

Hello Karen and Lynn,
I’M IN:) God bless you both
Our favorite Christmastime food- is Jesus’s birthday cake! Every year we make a cake for him- just like we would for every one in our family!
We connect by keeping consistent through the teen years as we did in the early years. Perhaps it is easier since we are a homeschooling family.

one of the best memories I have is my mother in laws she crab soup! I love to share it with friends during this time. My mother in law is in heaven now but this keeps her memory alive for me!
Hmm, my favorite Christmastime foods… I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I just really look forward to a delicous, home cooked meal from my grandmother. Her dressing is the best! Thanks for the giveaway, hope to win

I love the Christmas cookies. We make lots of different kinds and I try to give most of them away so I don’t eat them all.
We also have a family devotional book that we read each day in December which also has some good recipes in it.

Family tradition… going to the Christmas Eve service at church.

My favorite Christmas time food is the candy that my Grandma used to make. She no longer is able to make candy, but my mom and I have carried that tradition on. We make many delectables, but my fav is fannie maes, which have smooth sweet centers, and dipped in chocolate. Heavenly!!
Our family tradition is the same each year…breakfast at my sister-in-laws, home for a nap, family celebration at our home. My husband ADORES Christmas and family. We always have a fabulous day!
This sounds like such a wonderful book. I’m in and holding my breath! My favorite Christmas food is a Japanese my aunt made. No one can make it the way she did. Helping her was the icing on the cake (pun unintentional!)

My favorite food items at Christmas are the special homemade treats that aren’t in our home each day. My hubby loves peanut butter so I tend to make a few special treats for him that have peanut butter.

Our girls love “Snickerdoodles” (cookies). When we kicked off our Christmas musical in choir at church, we made our favorite Christmas recipe for a fellowship. I made Snickerdoodles. Our youngest (30 years old) walked in our house and asked, “Where are our presents?” The cookies make the whole house smell like Christmas.

My favorite Christmas recipe is my great-grandma’s cutout cookie recipe and homemade frosting. We use great Christmas cookie cutters and color the frosting with food coloring.

One of my traditions is baking the CHristmas cookies and in the background having the traditional Christmas music playing. I am just preparing for my traditional cookie baking, and this time I decided to host my first cookie exchange. Pray for me gals !
My friend gave us peanut butter balls in a tin of Christmas goodie one year. They are so yummy but my kids think we need to have this friend over in order to make them.
We are living in a new home, new city, new state with a new DD (4 years) and are building many new traditions but one that will ALWAYS be with us is reading the Christmas Story (Luke 2) before gifts on Christmas Eve.

We are constantly going over with our kids “Why do we celebrate Christmas?” It is a good reminder for them and for us!
