Squeezing Out The Last Bit of Summer
Well, I saw it.
I could take it when the back-to-school supplies hit the shelves long before it was the Fourth of July. I know some states begin school in August. We in Michigan do not. The public and private schools mostly head back in September. And even though my kids attend a homeschool co-op, we too don’t make the little darlins’ hit the books till after Labor Day.
I’d been trying to squeeze the last bit of summer out of August, minding my own business, planning a few days trips and summer treats before we start our co-op in a mere 17 days- YIKES!!
Then Saturday, while stopping off at a store while our 16 year-old Mitch was at tryouts for the 2011 summer travel baseball season in Grand Rapids, “it” stared me right smack-dab in the face.
Halloween candy!
P-uuuu-leeeease!!! Can we not rush from one season to the next already? I swear (not the cussin’ type but the I-am-so-sure-I-am-remembering-this-correctly-type) that when I was a kid, the retailers did not push and rush the seasons and holidays so much.
I wish it were still that way.
Yes ma’am, put out the Halloween candy the day after Labor Day and not one minute sooner. Easter egg dying supplies? I do not need to purchase them on January 1st, thank you very much. So, I say let them line the shelves the day after Valentines Day, okay?
Geeesh!
I know, I know….we need to be ahead of the ballgame on Christmas. It would be a little late to just put the decorations out the day after Thanksgiving. So I’ll grant ya that one.
Still, please don’t back that bus clear up into September. It makes my blood boil. (And I’m sure it is the reason I never had an illustrious career in retail merchandise marketing!)
I’m not sure if it bothers me because seeing the products of the various holidays so early on makes me feel behind when in reality I am not. Perhaps it is because I feel that our society in general is way too rushed.
We whip through the holidays with little regard for what they really mean. I say it is time to slow down and savor.
So, this week, you will not find me out stashing away mini-candy bars for the munchkins that will descend on my neighborhood in 69 days. I’ll buy them a week or so before the big day and then put them in my big hand-carved wooden bowl and wait for the doorbell to ring.
Okay…truth be told, what really will happen is this:
I’ll buy them a week before. Then, my husband will locate the stash and pull out all the milk chocolate ones to nibble, sneak, dip in peanut butter or take in his lunch to work.
The boys will smell the sweet scent of their daddy’s sneaking and promptly finish all the crisp-filled ones and the “Mr. Goods” (their absolute favorite!) Finally, I’ll slowly polish off most of the dark chocolate.
Then? Well, I’ll have to run out on Halloween afternoon and buy more! And since the mini-bars are so expensive and we’ve already bought a batch, I’ll opt for the jumbo bags of hard candies at the dollar store.
Sorry kids
Well, for now, I will determine to take one season, one holiday, a holy day or daily day, one day at a time. Will you?
Which reminds me….Tune back in later this week or next for a back-to-school organizational giveaway.
If your kids are headed back to school, you’ll have a little more time to organize your stuff. That is, until you need to dash off to get your kid in the carpool line or run them to an activity. If you homeschool, well, then you’d better get organized or you’ll soon find yourself sitting in a corner, eyes glassed-over and drooling. Trust me, I know!
I actually live both lives since my kids are homeschooled but also take classes from others as well. Both lifestyles have their own brand of busyness, but well….that is another post.
So I’ll see you later this week. I’m off to sip some iced tea while I post some items on Craig’s List.
Notice I said “iced tea”, not hot cocoa.
Let’s not rush things….

Congrats to the winner of the “Pie, Oh My!” giveaway from over the weekend. It is: Sarah; Timestamp August 20th at 4:00 p.m. Send your home address to me at karen@proverbs31.org so I can get your gift to you!

Karen,
I am so excited that I won your pie give-a-way. Today, while I was walking, I was talking to the Lord,( because He has really been nugging me to open up my home for a specific group of women) about this whole hospitality thing. I have been doing the But God thing. Telling Him all the reasons that I can’t because my house is not this or that. When along He has told me that it it not about my house, but that womens heart.
I agree about these holidays being rushed. I understand in Hobby Lobby they have Christmas most months of the years for the craft sellers. But all the other holidays? I don’t have a single friend that is THAT planned ahead, prob for a good reason.
I don’t see how they would remember what they have when the holiday finally comes.
We don’t hand out candy for Halloween, it’s nice not to buy it. We don’t have enough trick-or-treaters to give candy away too, so then we’re stuck with all that candy. We just go over to my in-laws and eat theirs!
On the serious note, I have really been struggling with living in today. Satan knows it’s my weakness. I keep jumping into the future wondering if my baby will be born healed or into Jesus’ arms. And I can’t really make any plans like most expecting mothers. It’s a bit frustrating. But I know that God only has given me strength for today. Not for tomorrow, not for a month from now. But I do not doubt He will be generous in His strength then. And that is where I think I can get away with thinking in the future. And now that I catch how much I try to live in tomorrow, Satan has decided to have me think a lot of the past, when we first learned of our baby’s diagnosis. Definitely a spiritual battle for me!
I live in Texas and there is a store here that has had some Christmas stuff out for weeks so I feel your pain on that one. It mushes (a technical term) everything together if there is not a break between one holiday ending and another one starting.
I would also be with your husband on taking all of the milk chocolate.

Amen Karen! I have been struggling with the idea of how to slow down and simplify our family life. My family does not thrive on chaos which is exactly how we have been living this summer! Thank you for your words today – I feel like I’m not alone in fighting against this busy hectic world we are living in. Praying that God will give me wisdom to know when to say NO and just enjoy the simple things in life.
I agree too!!! I’m in the south and we start school 2-3 weeks before labor day…WHY? Up north we didn’t start until after labor day!! AGREED!!!!
I know I went through WallyWorld the other day and I saw Halloween candy and thought – are you crazy??? two and half more months? Just to let it sit around the store and rot? or the house and get eaten?
But for the seasonal stuff you really need from Wally world you can’t get until after school season or halloween season – like…hiking boots for kids…
Yes, I do plan ahead for school season because this year I had three to buy for, but all others can wait for their turn!!
Blessings!
I miss the “going back to school.” Our girls are both grown. We had a tradition (terrible thing to) – when we did our back to school shopping – we had banana splits for our lunch. One of the very few times I can even remember “stopping” for ice cream, that just wasn’t our thing to do. We did enjoy (sometimes:D ) the back to school splits. Enjoy those wonderful times!
Becky
I completely agree with you about rushing the seasons and the holidays. It really made me sick a couple weeks ago when I went into our local pharmacy expecting to find some back to school sales and instead found all the Halloween stuff out. Yuck.
Kimberlee – I realize I may not read every comment closely, but I have not seen a posting from you in a long while. I’ve been very concerned about how you are doing and about your baby. I pray for you and your family often! It sounds like you are working through quite a bit. I hope that you are getting all that you need. Take care and know that I am thinking about you!
We are in one of those states where we start early. My kids started the last week of July andd because we are the track system I did pick one with a break quite soon so we are out of school already and having a blast with the last of summer. The story of back to school banana splits while shopping reminded me of our favorite tradition. On the first day of school each year the kids and I go out for ice cream before going on and getting on with the rest of the school year. I love to actually getting to talk to them for a few minutes to find out about their first impressions without the pressures of digging into their backpacks and getting the day done.
Hi, Crystal!!
Still praying for a miracle for her.
Thx so much for your thoughts! I have 5 or so weeks left, can you believe it? It has been a miracle that I have only gained 24# while eating what I want (lots of ice cream & fries) and not exercising! Crazy.
Anyway plz feel free to email me (thanksalatte @ gmail . com) or look for me on fb if you’re there (Kimberlee Patton).
And yes, these past 22 weeks have been an amazing journey of faith & growth & knowing God more.
I agree with you 100% Karen. I remember my Mother fussing about the stores having Christmas deco. out before Thanksgiving. Now Christmas is in the stores before summer is over. I have already spotted Christmas items in some stores for about a month now.!!!
