Real Moms Real Jesus Giveaway with Jill Savage
When I first had kids, I used to have misguided notions about what “real moms” did.
I thought real moms never needed to use a pacifier.
After three weeks of practically no sleep with my first newborn, I desperately popped the one the hospital gave us into her mouth…..and slept for 6 hours straight!
I used to think real moms never needed to holler at their kids.
In the past 19 years….well let’s just say on occasion I’ve had a touch of laryngitis.
I used to think real moms had toddlers and children who never misbehaved in public.
Boy am I glad when my kids were little there wasn’t the humiliating one-two punch of cell phones with cameras combined with Youtube!
I used to think real moms could figure this mothering thing out on their own…….you know “mother’s intuition”.
It only took me a few days to discover that real moms need each other……and Jesus.
And I know the ultimate go-to place for moms to find both— Hearts at Home!
My friend Jill Savage began this fabulous mom place with a handful of friends and a whole lot of Jesus in her little living room in Central Illinois back in the early 1990′s.
Now it is an international lifeline of encouragement and information for all moms at all stages. The national conference is next weekend in Bloomington, Illinois.
That conference has changed my life.
Each year since beginning as an attendee and transitioning to a presenter, Jesus has met me there.
Sometimes He nudges me about my mothering.
Other times he cleans up my marriage.
Other years He guides me in my homemaking.
Sometimes He just lets me laugh with old & new friends alike as together we tackle this mothering thing.
So check out “Hearts” by clicking here. It isn’t to late to attend this next conference.
Or check out the remaining conferences for the year. (If you can come to the Colorado one where I’ll be speaking, I’d LOVE to meet you!)
Or take a trip through the resources on the website and give yourself an early Mother’s Day gift for a real mom.
Jill is giving one to a soon-to-be-smiling mom today here on my site.
Her encouraging book Real Moms, Real Jesus just might be the shot-in-the-arm you need.
What does Jesus know about the peanut-butter-and-jelly life of a mom? Plenty!
In chapters that examine key behaviors and decisions Jesus made during His life on earth, Jill brings those lessons right down to the laundry-filled, sticky-fingered days every mother knows.
Throughout Real Moms…Real Jesus, Jill helps you see that you have a Friend and Savior who understands—
- never getting time alone
- high demands
- lack of sleep
- betrayal
- disappointment
Between the chapters are interactive vignettes that turn the concept of the book back around.
If the meat of the content is looking at Jesus’ life on earth and understanding how to apply that in our everyday lives, these perspective vignettes are brief, refreshing glimpses starting with our own messy, busy lives.
Jill continually reminds the reader that Jesus is not an unattainable deity, but a Friend who understands.
So girlfriends & fellow moms, if you’d like a shot at winning a signed copy of this helpful mommy manual, then leave a comment on this post.
You can tell us what ‘real mom’ activities you have planned for this weekend.
Or simply say “I’m in”. Winner will be chosen randomly & announced on Monday.
I’ll go first.
My real mom weekend consists of a little catching up on paperwork & spring cleaning from when I was sick. However, I will be taking a brief break to perform one of my most favorite real mom duties……
Cheering my son on at the JV state homeschool basketball tournament when his team plays in the finals on Saturday. Whoo-hoo!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!
Okay…now what is on your real mom agenda? I’d love to know!
Real Jesus Blessings,

I’m in!
Wow…Well, I work three days a week (at my paid job). Then we have thearpy (my son has Cerebral Palsy) two days a week. We have soccer twice a week. Then I have bible study on Monday night. I get ready for kids church on Sunday’s and also practice for the praise team.
I think that’s it!
My real mom weekend: Well, I’m a homeschooling mom too.. My youngest is sick, started Tuesday night and she still has fever and cough. All week I’ve been preparing for a big event at church tonight. (large committee, so thankfully, I haven’t been preparing alone) So, today I am starting the weekend off with trying to get a little school in, taking care of my sicky poo, getting more work done and ready for tonight, making myself presentable for tonight and get there and have a great time! (Cindi Wood, Frazzled Female is speaking!) I am fortunate that my hubby is getting off work early to be able to relieve me of the Mom duties. Tomorrow I hope to get to the grocery store after cleaning up at church. Sunday..a NAP sounds great..and it’s suppose to rain..even better for a day of napping..after Worship, of course!!
Thanks, Karen and Jill.
this is the perfect weekend… for me, my “Real Mom” activity consists of leaving my children for an overnight scrapbooking retreat!!
I’m in.
My kids are finally better after having the flu the past 2 weeks, so my weekend will consist of laundering all the bedding, cleaning up the house, and making food for a potluck dinner on Sunday. Just another day….
Both my kids’ birthdays are in April. We are moving out of state the middle of March. My real mom moment consisted of calling my kids’ friends to see if they could come to a birthday party in two days because we just figured out that since we are moving in a few weeks this was the time to have their early birthday parties and then making a run to the dollar store to find stuff for goodies bags and items to make cupcakes all completely last minute!
Sounds like a wonderful gift.
Real Mom activities this week include taking my son to his baseball practice..wouldn’t normally be a big deal but his Dad is the one who helps coach the team and he just left for training for his deployment to Afghanistan. It’s so hard on all 5 of our kids but right now it’s hardest on my 7 yr old son. He wants him there so much and it’s heartbreaking for me to see the look on his face when we show up and I am the only Mom there, all the Dad’s are there. One day at a time sweet Jesus…
Oh I’d love to win this book- I read an excerpt on her site and it was wonderful!
My real mom activities this week will include changing diapers, doing laundry, cooking, and hopefully, enjoying the beautiful weather with my kids!
And to Holly in the comments above, I’m praying for you and your family- I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to have your husband and the kids’ daddy deployed. Praying for safety for him as well.
My real mom weekend includes taking care of my 7 month old and 4 year old, changing diapers and wiping bottoms.
I am so thankful to be in the trenches, as hard as it can be sometimes.
Holly— Adding you and your sweet kids to my prayer list!!!
Real Mom Weekend: coaching my son’s basketball team when I know nothing about basketball. Catching up on cleaning and helping with school projects.
My real mom weekend includes getting a little spring cleaning done. My husband works on Saturdays, which is fine, he provides for our family and does his share around here too. My kiddo’s (ages 11 and 13) will be helping me. Afterwards we will have some time of fun.
My real mom weekend will mostly follow in the pattern of many of my weekends recently…with cleaning and laundry and make-believe and finger painting. But in addition to all that, my daughter’s 2nd birthday is coming up the end of this month so we will also be travelling to a special backwoodsy store that sells great wooden learning toys to look for a birthday present for a special little one! Real Moms, Real Jesus looks like a great book and it is now on my “wish list”. Thanks!
Getting my little 3 year old ready for a father-daughter dinner at church
. And taking care of her 1 year old brother since he doesn’t get to go. And then babysitting for a friend so they can go out…she did the same for me last weekend!
My daughter and I have a Saturday afternoon date planned. We will be going out to shop and enjoy a movie together. Then we will return home and start the spring cleaning that our apartment needs!
I’m in.

My real mom moment from dinner last night… (C kid) “MMMM… Mom, this stuff tastes like the stuff in my nose.” I believe it was a compliment – as disturbing as this may be. Never a dull moment!
Hanging on and need all the help I can get!
Its so true, though, that when you reach out to friends and up to God, things get better.
Its just so hard sometimes to find the energy to reach!
I have college kids now but both living at home. My real mom adventure for the weekend is spending the night in a hotel with 9 teens, 2 college students, 6 youth leader-moms and attending the Revolve Tour.
((Olivia and Karen)) Thank you for the prayers, they mean so much to me!!
LOVE this post…..boy do I need Jesus to help me every day in this adventure of Mothering! Lots of activities planned this w/e, one of which is not a children activity in that I’m getting my hair cut and “covered” (the grey, that is!) WOO-HOO!!!!
Can’t wait to check out this great book on mothering!
THanks so much, Karne!
Love Hearts and Home – It was where I was introduced to Jill Savage, Karen Ehman and a host of other wonderful speakers over the years. Bummed I can’t make it to Illinois this year.
Real Mom Weekend for me will include a lot of catching up on laundry and cleaning. Throw in two Upward Basketball Games and hopefully a nap!
I had a great Mom/Daughter moment last night when my 10 year old daughter and I attended a Secret Keeper Girl event – It was wonderful and spoke to my heart and hers. A very special time of bonding for us! If there is one in your neighborhood you should take your tween daughter for sure!
A REAL MOM ALWAYS REMEMBERS TO MAKE EACH ONE IN HER FAMILY FEEL VALUABLE, SPECIAL, AND IMPORTANT.
My weekend will consist of nursing a sick child through strep, getting the other child to soccer practice, date time with dad, and the ultimate weekend activity – cleaning the house (for the millionth time) and doing massive laundry (again, again, again) to get rid of the germs that just will not leave the house! Oh for a warm day to open the windows and get some fresh air in the house!
What a blessing this book would be to a unwed teenage mom that is part of our lives. Wish this book were available when we adopted our twin boys!!
Real Moms enjoy their GRANDCHILDREN! Helping her children to relax and to trust God to watch over their children, lead them, make them mighty in Spirit!
Your early experiences and thoughts as to what a real Mom should be reminded me of mine when my 15 month old was born. I was caught up in every possible area: pacifiers, breastfeeding, jar food, water, sleep schedule co-sleeping, etc. I didn’t judge others for doing any of those things but if I did them I was so judgemental of myself. I spent so much time feeling guilty and blaming myself if something didn’t go according to me self-created standards. I’ve come a long way since but the enemy occasionally still plants those thoughts in my mind about not being a good enough Mom. During those times I only have one choice and that is to hold those thoughts captive to Christ and remind myself that I am the Mom God created me to be me-fearfully and wonderfully made.
My real Mom weekend consists of nursing, nursing and nursing since my son is going through a growth spurt and that’s all he wants to do
We’re also thinking of taking him somewhere where he can use up all that energy he has whether it’s the play area in the mall or something else.
Have a blessed weekend, Karen
I’m in. Thanks
I’m in!!!
I need all the guidance I can get! My husband and I adopted 2 15year olds!!
I’m in. I am now a grandmom to three and have one coming to spend the night, so off to the grocery store. I will pass this book to one of my daughter’s. They both can use some encouragement as Mom’s in the world today.

I know 2 sweet mom’s who would appreciate this book…my sons are grown and out the door with their own families…Thank you
This weekend I will be getting ready for birthday’s! My oldest child will be turning 10 the following weekend and my only daughter will be 4 on Monday. We’re having 4 little girls over for a party on Sunday.
Should be interesting!

My real mom weekend plans: Friday night am a guest reader at the elementary school’s Family Reading Night. Saturday morning hoping to take the kids to the free showing of “Shrek Forever” in a neighboring town. While there, shopping for supplies for a special school biography project (this will be a major shopping event – and I wish teachers would consider the economy when making such assignments!). Home to make dinner for the family. Then Sunday School and church on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon is a child’s piano recital, and she and I are playing a duet. Sunday evening is Bible club for the kids and Bible study for the parents. At some point during the weekend, I will also be doing some work-work. And I hope to make time to change bed sheets and wash them, also.
Church nursery on Sunday, two indoor soccer games Sat. a.m. shopping, cleaning, cooking….as my father used to say “A woman’s work is NEVER done” (even in retirement). But when I’m an empty-nester I know I will miss all the chaos and emotional roller-coasters with three teens.
I’m in!
I’m in too! I’ve glanced at this book a few times~it looks good. Thanks!
Pancake breakfast for PTA and Church… fun times!
I’ll be making about 75 bierocks which I sell. And playing with my grandson who now lives with me with his mother. The “real mom” duties don’t end when your children are grown I’ve recently discovered!! Silly me for thinking they did!! lol Hopefully a little time relaxing. My brother will be in town and looking forward to spending a little time with him and my 12 year old nephew. I would love to win the book for my daughter. She’s a 20 year old mother who recently has been trying to do it on her own. She could really use some Jesus encouragement.
Oh boy…this weekend I am a REAL mom as the host home for the 10th grade boys at our church for a youth weekend. Our oldest will be participating at someone else’s house but we will have the “big boys” along with our three youngest and two small group leaders right here. I am told I’ll need to have LOTS of food!
I’m mom to one little 20 month old and another little “bun in the oven”. This week we along with my husband will be visiting with my brother who happens to be disabled and lives in a home with others who have developmental or physical challenges. I’ll be making cupcakes with my son this afternoon to deliver to the residents of the home in hopes that he learns to love like Jesus and share His love with those who need it. I can’t wait for our monthly adventure tomorrow and love to see how Christ is working in our little guys heart already!
I’m in ….thanks!

My daughter and I have planned a Mother/Daughter/Grand-daughter day on Saturday starting with breakfast (we’re going to let the guys join us) and then off to shop for a new booster car seat and probably something blue…we just found out we have a new little grandson on the way!!
I’m in!!!
Basketball Tournement all weekend!!
I am definitely with you in all your ‘real mom’ episodes! With my first daughter I said a lot of ‘Nevers’ and have eaten all of those with my second daughter! Being a mom is hard work and we do need Jesus and each other to make it through!
I was the best parent (as a pre-k teacher) until I actually gave birth to my own kid
This weekend I am Matron of Honor in my Best Friend’s wedding! My 2 year old is the “Ring Bear”, my husband is playing for the ceremony, and my 5 year old is thankfully just watching-with friends of ours!!!! Next weekend I and 6 other mom friends will be at the conference! WOO HOO!!!!

I’m In!!
My real mom weekend will be curling up on couch with a cup of tea and the telephone as I take my weekly time to phone my children who live so far away. I will be listening intently to all that is going on in their grown up life!!
This mom is a little packed! I am playing for a benefit concert for a little girl diagnosed with cerebral palsy on Saturday night, and I have a Theology paper due on Sunday. (I am going to school online.) Saturday morning, however, is a favorite time for us. We like to make from scratch pancakes with some turkey bacon or sausage and a hot pot of coffee. That’s our time to relax together!
I’m in! My real mom activities for this weekend include catching up on all the cleaning that has been neglected in order to potty train my 3 yr. old plus two other kids that I baby-sit! So thankful that God has been with me through every successful and not-so-successful moment.
I am going to get my hair done! Kids are with dad and I get a few womanly minutes
I enjoy to being with other moms in mom2mom once a week.
I am in!!!! Joining a Bible Study called “Girl Talk” for myself and a family Bible Study called “To Save a Family….all this weekend!!!!
First off, I think it’s CRAZY COOL that your kids get to participate in homeschool BB!! My youngest guy would be all over that! (unfortunately in the greater rural IL places those things don’t exist – ha)
Real mom time here this weekend will include grandiose things such as laundry, cleaning and organizing.
Looking SO forward to Hearts next weekend!!
I have 12 week old twin boys…so hopefully my weekend will include some sleep!
I am still a stay at home mom after 25 years. The kids are bigger but the issues are still the same. I enjoy “Hearts at Home” because this is truly where my heart is.
I’m in my best friend’s wedding this weekend… Left my toddler for the first time & praying my 8 wk old does good!
I’m in!
Going to play in the snow with my kiddo’s and hubby this weekend – building great memories!
Real moms need Jesus and other moms. Book sounds great
I was a real mom today. We went for a quarter mile walk in the rain, until my four year old’s hair got wet, as she requested. When we came in she said, Mom, you’re like Mr. Rogers, changing your shoes and putting a sweater on. Is there a better compliment? We also enjoyed the Princess and the frog today. This weekend, reconnecting as a family and going to dinner and watch the Bulls game with my husband while the girls and I play uno is what I am looking forward to. Thanks for your encouragement and support.
My “Real Mom” duties will include delivering the last of the Girl Scout cookies that family and friends have ordered while doing the weekly errands and grocery shopping. I will then come back home to clean the house and finish the laundry…
to go grocery shopping!
and do laundry!
I’m in!
I’m In! My real mom agenda for this weekend, well I’m not sure what it includes! My husband has been out of town for 6 days so I’ve been home alone with our 4 & 1 year old while also coming down with strep throat. I also had to take them by myself for 4 days to attend a funeral last week and our youngest got sick so I’m really hoping that my agenda includes RELAXING! More realistically, probably hubby’s laundry and making up for the cleaning that got neglected.
Real mom activites, make sure my little guy knows that he is going to be feeling better soon, now that he has medicine and mommy to rock him when he is feeling really bad, attend an all day Girls on the Run coaches training and then continue cleaning things inhopes my other 2 little kiddos don’t get sick also!! Off I go!! Great post!
um, laundry:) i’m in!
Daddy is on the road working, little girl and I are going to enjoy our time together. Sounds like a wonderful book, and the nudge in my arm that I need.
I’m definitely a real mom who needs a REAL JESUS!
I’m definitely a real mom who needs a REAL JESUS!
I’m in! As a single mother of 6,who has to work at least 40 hours a week, I really need this book!!!
I am attending three different basketball games, one for each of my three sons, on Saturday. Sunday is the awards ceremony for the season. And I should take at least one of them for a haircut. Real mom activities.
I have to smile because I am an adoptive mom of two beautiful children and I have often been asked, “Are you their real mom?” Oh yes, I’m their “real” mom. I have done all the things you mentioned and then some. I have loved when they were acting unloveable. I have soothed when the storms on the inside were much stronger than any hurricane we’ve ever gone through (and we went through Katrina). I have cried more tears for them than they have ever imagined they would cry for themselves. Yes, I’m their real mom. Thanks for the reminder….and the encouragement.

My real mom activity is taking my 2 and 3 year old to a birthday party!
My weekend includes Mommy Time on Saturday and watching the first ever Vball game of my 10y/o.
My husband and I are going to see Christy Nockels and Chris Tomlin in concert in Springfield tonight — we’ve never done anything like that before and we are both so excited! We have an hour of uninterrupted drive time / talk time there and back — looking forward to a date with my favorite guy!
Tomorrow will be family time — which will be even better because of our time away together tonight!
So true… I had many ideas what “reals moms” were prior to having children. My ideas have changed now that I have 5!!
Real mom plans for this weekend? Nurturing my family back to health as 5 out of the 7 of us have been sick this week!
Well I will be catching up on my almost 5 yr. old daughter’s school lessons as we have had a trying week of obedience and had to forgo a few lessons in order to work on the condition of her heart!
I’m supervising a sleepover with my girls’ cousins.
I’m in. I’ll be cleaning up the play room, enjoying a lazy morning of Saturday cartoons, and taking my kids to church on Sunday.
Spending the day tomorrow at my daughters track meet! Church Sunday. Oh yeah, all the household chores in between there.
I’m a real mom and a grandma. I’m putting my name in the hat for our daughter – a single mom. Being a mom was hard enough with my DH who is a great dad. How our daughter handles being a single mom – part time as her son spends time with his father – amazes me sometimes.
I’m in!!
My first mother daughter trip. Taking my daughter to a honor’s choir event and including a Passport 2 Purity adventure. Leaning on the Lord!
My weekend will be busy cleaning and laundry. Yuck!
Real mom activities for me this weekend include helping my daughter deliver GS cookies and getting my hair cut and colored. Also, maybe some cleaning and games with the fam. Laundry is actually caught up! It feels so good not to have to do that over the weekend
Hmmm… real mom activities. Cooking dinner, sewing and squeezing some time in to catch up on journaling and some sort of bible study! I’m determined.
I’m in!
My real mom agenda for the weekend is attending our local St. Patrick’s Day parade to watch my daughter march and dance with her Irish dance group on Saturday. We will also be attending church on Sunday and visiting with relatives after church.
I am cleaning because we are sharing a babysitter with some friends tomorrow night for a comedy benefit night! Sunday is church and the mandatory “after church nap.”
My real mom plans consist of picking up and delivering Girl Scout cookies, tackling the mounds of laundry, doing my MBA homework while taking care of one sick child and helping another study for 2 tests.
