Mundane:
1. Lacking interest or excitement; dull.
2. Of this earthly world rather than a heavenly or spiritual one.
Does the description fit? Of your life I mean.
At times do you sense the world parading by living their exciting, fulfilling or important lives? While you? You are tossing another load of laundry in the washer, clipping another coupon to try to make the ever-further ends come a little closer to meeting, heading off to the same old work or you are wiping something; a counter, a runny nose or baby’s bottom.
Again.
In my mother’s day, “keeping up with the Joneses” was a temptation only when chatting over the fence with a neighbor (who had a better house) or bumping into a fellow PTA member (who drove a nicer car).
Now? Now the Joneses parade by us hourly on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and websites; on reality TV or HGTV; at church and at the mall.
They post joyful statuses, while we process yet another trial.
They announce exciting news, while we keep at the same grind as yesterday—- the unexciting familiar.
They are connecting with important people and trekking off on exciting outings, while we peer in through a distant, dim screen.
But does this have to be?
No it does not.
We could unplug and hide.
We could try to capture an exciting life too. Maybe get on a reality show.
Make more money to be able to afford a luxury or two.
We could change something, right?
Yes, we could. The most important change could really happen.
A change in our perspective.
This is a truth God has been driving home to me for years.
I first learned about it 20 nearly years ago as a young mom by reading a quote from him. It declared, “Wherever you are….be all there.”
I’ve talked about my struggle with it it here.
And I’ve had wonderful role models who lived it like her & her & now her.
However, I am still a struggling student of this seemingly ironic truth: if you develop thankfulness, look for God in the moment and wherever you are you really purpose to really “be all there”, you’ll unearth a treasured jewel; a startling discovery.
The life you’ve always wanted….is the one you already live.
We’re going to talk more about this next week when my newest friend in this journey, whom I’ve discovered was a cyber friend all along, will join us. And she’ll be bringing the fruit of her thankfulness, put to pen.
For now, will you try it? Wherever you are, be all there.
And be thankful.
It transforms the mundane into the magical. And it made one ordinary mom’s Mothers Day a delight.
Grilled chicken brats, slow cooked beans and slopping, spilling iced tea mixed up by a 13-year-old in a bright new summer pitcher he picked out just for mom at the grocers.
A hug from a sun-kissed, 16-year-old left-handed pitcher upon his arrival back on Michigan soil. He stepped off the airplane and my mommy prayers for safe sporting travel ceased. The sight of Nike shorts & a baseball cap atop his strawberry blond head as he planted a kiss on my check in front of hundreds of travelers. What queen can buy these pleasures?
A handwritten card from my far away 19-year-old mirror of me. A $5 bill fell out ( “treat yourself to a latte, mom”) and tears fell from my eyes.
A husband who hugged, grilled, mowed the lawn and quietly cleaned up the kitchen. His wordless ways shout love.
And an afternoon outing with my nearly-80-year-old mother. Resale shops. Coffee. Intentional questions about her youth and her heritage. Homemade blackberry crisp. Her favorite. Worth staying up late to bake.
Mundane or magic?
The choice is ours! What say you?
Magical Blessings,

Loved this. And so true, but needed to be reminded. Spent my day with family and best friends. Daughter called me early, my 3 boys played in the mud all day. Love you Karen for your God sent inspiration.
Another great blog post and a fantastic reminder to enjoy the simple blessings God puts in our lives. They are there all the time, we just have to stop to appreciate them. My day was busy (not what I would have originally chosen) but full of great family time with my kids and two wonderful mothers full of wisdom and love. Your post reminded me of a verse I have posted on my computer here at work:
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him.” Romans 12:1 from The Message
Jolene–
Love the Message paraphrase of Romans 12:1. Thanks for posting!!!
It is an attitute of the mind!!! I told someone last week, I was taking on an attitude of gratitude! It isn’t always easy to keep it going but it starts in the mind. I am truly blessed, God has forgiven me of so much that I should walk around with a smile plastered to my face!!! Life can get tough (look at the recent fires, floods, tornados, earthquakes) and hard. I am just thankful to a loving Father for all He gives me!!! Grateful is this woman!
Tears in my eyes too. Very sweet and convicting post. Thanks for reminding me how blessed I am
Happy Mother’s Day.
Love the Romans 12 in the Message…thanks for sharing
For me it is choosing to see it…all the blessings in a busier than I wanted to be day…I could cry (and I did) with all the love I felt from family, friends and especially my God…I missed my Mom (gone now for 5 years) but felt so loved and needed…God is so good…all the time
Amen & Amen!
Lately, I have been trying to be intentional about not comparing my life to others; not allowing the enemy to steal the joy of my blessings by replacing it with discontement and ingratitude; not focusing on what isn’t but what has and is.
And it works! My perspective changes and it is so much more peaceful and joyful.
Thank you for the reminder.
This post is very timely for me. As my life is starting to slow down, and not be as chaotic as it was when I was growing up, I look back and I can see the blessings through the trial-after-trial-after-trail life I grew up in. I look back and see God’s intricate work in each trial to bring about nothing but good Now, I am working on producing the eyes that focus on the good in situations, rather than the bad. I’ve been going through a daily devotional and right now, the main point is allowing God’s presence soak into every aspect of your life. I feel that the first step to doing this is to focus on God’s provisions and blessings through every day, especially the hard one! Thanks for the post!
Thank you so much for the reminder that I am living the life that so many pray for…that I prayed for! I want to see the magical in the midst of what seems at first to be mundane. I have been given so much – thank you for that helping me clean off my rose-colored glasses so I can truly see!!
