Hi Wednesday Weight Loss gals! Please check in as usual today, We love hearing how you are doing and knowing how to pray for you too. And please enjoy this guest interview with my friend Arlene Pellicane from www.LosingWeightAfterBaby.com. She and I met at a Hearts at Home event in California a few years back. She has an awesome ministry that encourages new moms in specific, but is also chock-full of info all women trying to lose weight can relate to. Enjoy! (And check out today’s giveaway!)
An energetic speaker and writer, Arlene Pellicane has been featured on The Hour of Power, The 700 Club, and Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah.ย She created a website www.LosingWeightAfterBaby.com to encourage moms with podcasts, videos, articles, eBooks, and the audiobook, Losing Weight After Baby: 31 Days to a New You.
Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, Arlene worked as the Associate Producer for Turning Point Television with Dr. David Jeremiah.ย She has also been an on-air features producer for The 700 Club.ย Arlene earned her BA in Intercultural Studies and Communication from Biola University and her Masters in Journalism from Regent University.ย She loves speaking to women at moms groups, seminars, and retreats.ย Arlene lives in San Diego with her husband James and three children, Ethan, Noelle, and Lucy.
You have a ministry designed for women who need to lose weight after giving birth, tell us how you got started in it?
I found myself in my mid-thirties, pregnant 5 times in a span of 6 years, so I had a lot of firsthand experience with gaining and losing baby pounds!ย Two of my pregnancies ended in miscarriage but they still involved gaining and losing weight.ย I noticed so many moms around me were discouraged and hopeless about ever shedding those last 10 (or soโฆ) pounds.ย I wanted to develop something to help them recapture that hope and make healthy choices for themselves and ultimately for their children.
Why is losing weight after a baby so hard for many moms?
First, you feel entitled to eat.ย Youโve been caring for one or more kids all day, so itโs easy to turn to food for comfort and a pick-me-up.ย Next, you are pressed for time so you donโt plan your meals or exercise.ย Thatโs why so many moms end up in the drive thru which is a killer for losing weight.ย Then you look around and see that most of the moms you know havenโt lost their weight either.ย Itโs easier to go with the flow then put out the effort it takes to lose the weight.
Being a mom is a huge job in and of itself. How can women carve time out to take care of themselves when they are so focused on taking care of their child or children?
Thatโs a great question because many moms get stuck here.ย We are โmom martyrs,โ doing everything for everyone else and thinking that is so noble.ย Being worn out as a mom doesnโt serve anyone.ย When you take time for yourself to exercise, you will be a better mom for your kids.ย You can exercise out of your home.ย For instance, I bought a used spin bike on Craigslist.ย I pump up the music and ride while my 5 & 3 year old run around the house and go crazy.ย They call it โexercise time!โ and they love it.ย Learn to incorporate exercise into your familyโs schedule and/or have times when the kids are watched and you work out maybe 1 or 2 times a week.ย In terms of food, when you make wise choices for yourself (an apple instead of a bag of chips), your kids will follow suit and thatโs good for them.
What are some important facts for moms to remind themselves of in their quest to drop post-baby weight?
Nine months on, nine months off.ย Donโt get frustrated if it doesnโt all just fall off with nursing.ย Keep eating healthy and exercising until you reach your goal.ย Set small doable goals (lose 3 pounds this month) and long term goals (back to pre-pregnancy weight in 9 months).ย Losing weight is simple โ mathematical really โ to lose one pound a week, youโve got to cut 3500 calories out.ย Thatโs 500 calories a day that you have to exercise away or skip eating.ย So losing weight is simple; but itโs not easy.ย It takes a lot of diligence and perseverance.ย Which is actually a selling point, because as youโre working on your waistline, youโre also working on self-control which is essential to mature as a Christian.
Any words of advice or encouragement for all women out there trying to reach or maintain a healthy weight?
Take small incremental steps and then celebrate your victories.ย If you love soda, try to skip 1 soda a week.ย And then the next week, skip 2 and so on.ย Make small incremental changes that you can live with.ย Meditate on meaningful Scriptures about dedicating your body to the Lord like Romans 12:1-2.ย Rehearse positive affirmations in your mind like โI am a healthy person and my best days are ahead of me.โย Make losing weight as fun as possible by exercising with friends, having a biggest loser contest, and rewarding yourself for pounds lost (my rewards are massages from my husband).ย You can do it mom!

I’m shocked at how fast your blog loaded on my cell
phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyhow, excellent
blog!
Thank God!!! Thank you all for your prayers, my mom came out of the hospital and is thanking God she is doing well!
Arlene, thank you for your advice and encouragement. Your little girl has the same hair as my daughter! It was sooo sweet to see her and be reminded!
WELL, I, TOO AM LATE CHECKING IN, AND THE SCALE SHOWED IT–UP 2 POUNDS. I WAS NOT SURPRISED BECAUSE OF SOME BAD FOOD CHOICES(ICE CREAM 3 TIMES) BUT I HAVE ALMOST BROKEN MY POP TART FOR BREAKFAST ROUTINE; i HAVE SWITCHED TO HIGH FIBER CEREAL OR WHEAT TOAST WITH PEANUT BUTTER AND BANANA. i HAVE ALSO STOPPED EATING AT BREAK TINE, INSTEAD HAVE CHOSEN TO READ THE BIBLE AND DRINK WATER. FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER THOUGHT ABOUT READING THE BIBLE STRAIGHT FROM BEGINNING TO END, I ENCOURAGE THEM TO START. I HAVE GOTTEN SUCH WISDOM AND TENSION RELIEF FROM IT. BLESSINGS TO ALL AND REMEMBER THE WEIGHT GAIN DID NOT OCCUR OVERNIGHT SO IT WILL NOT COME OFF OVERNIGHT!!
Hi Ladies
I’m very late checking in this week. Sorry. I haven’t weighed this last week and have been really struggling with eating, exercise and guilt. It has been so hard and as one friend said to me – ‘Satan is hitting you over the head with a big stick!’ Unfortunately, while that has been helpful to know why I am doing what I am doing, it hasn’t helped me to be responsible for my part in submitting to Satans plan. I would really appreciate your prayers if anyone is checking in to see us late posters. Even at this stage in the week, I am not sure whether I will go to my weight watchers meeting this coming week. It feels bad to admit defeat this early in the week but I don’t want to see the scales go up AGAIN! I feel quite defeated as I came so close (only 2.5 kgs) from my goal weight and now I have moved further and further away.
On the up side, I have decided that running is not for me, but that I really enjoy walking, as I have in the past. I find that running is too mental for me and doesn’t allow me the time to sing to God, to pray or just to sort my thoughts out. This has been great to relieve the pressure to go running and to find something that I am enjoying and is mentally great at the same time!
Until next week…
Hi I am a couple of days late checkin in life is hectic around here at the moment.
Some news after given it all to the Lord with regards to my weight, saying thats it I can’t do it without your help and eating til satisfied not stuffed, and not weighing unless I feel lead to do, and not feeling like my clothes were getting looser….. I saw someone yesterday who said they thought I had loss weight, so I said I don’t think so. but I decided this morning, [fRIDAY ] to weighin … for the first time I had no fear before the weigh in thinking what ever it said I would deal with , I will NOT be held in bondage any more to what a pair of scalessays.
It has been 5 weeks since I have weighed and….. I have lost 4lbs which I am very happy with as slow is ok, because it took years to put it all on.. so it might take quite while to take it off.
I truly believe , that saying I can have all things in moderation and eating when Iam TRULY hungry and STOPPING when I am satisfied, has made me think , oh well I don’t really need it, Also thinking about how some foods make me feel better has encouraged me to eat alot healthier. So girls if I can do it with the Lords help, I am prayin you all can to. Have a lovely week.
“as youโre working on your waistline, youโre also working on self-control which is essential to mature as a Christian”…boy does that hit hime. If I can learn the self-control, that will help in so many areas where I struggle. Maybe that should be my prayer, instead of just the weight thing.
