After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to “listen” to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her.

It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue.

She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but they were helping her grow closer to God.

Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title of these thoughts-turned -book, Jesus Calling.

In keeping with the theme of Jesus Calling, I’m offering the following as a giveaway to one of my cyber friends:

~ The book/journal Jesus Calling with space each day for your own journaling.

~ A set of fine-tip Sharpies–my favorite kind of pen :-)

~ A week-at-a-glance schedule pad to write down your appointments with God & others.

~ A pair of fuzzy, shea-infused, lavender-scented lounge socks from Bath & Body Works to keep you comfy when you are spending time with God.

~ Two packets of flavored hot cocoa–one raspberry & one tiramasu.

Will you leave a comment today to be entered in the drawing? Tell us what distractions keep you from connecting with God during your day.

Or what changes you’d like to see in this area.

Or, if you’d just like the giveaway to help you in your quest to connect with God, simply say “I’m in!”

The winner will be announced Monday.

Speaking of winners, congrats to the winner of 31 Days to a Younger You. She is: Lana. Send your home address to me at [email protected]

Happy Weekend, everyone!

  1. Distractions for me include my 2 boys, my husband, the computer, the Wii, household chores, church responsibilities, oh where will the list end? But I have been trying to journal a bit more this year and so far, I’m doing better than in the past, but not great

  2. SOO many distractions that keep me from my time with God!!! My kids, the computer, housework, busyness, the list goes on and on!!

I would love the desire to spend time with God to consume me so that all else would fall away!!

  3. If this is open to Canadians, then could I please also be “in” the drawing. My journaling is usually also just a monologue, I would love to read Sarah’s book and be inspired to change that. Thanks!

  4. Not 5 minutes before I read your devotional, I was having a conversation with God about this very thing. My time with Him is lacking and I feel it. Since Christmas I have had a hard time getting the quiet time that my spirit needs to be filled up. Of course there are those through out the day conversations, and we can join God in what He is doing in the world around us, but to be truly effective for His kingdom and for His glory, true quiet time is so essential. When I’m not spending the quality time with my Father that my spirit requires, it really effects how I relate to others. Thank you for being God’s voice of encouragement. If we are not loving the God that we serve, and nurturing that relationship, then how can we truly love others. God bless you, and your quiet time….Isn’t He amazing!

  5. I love jounaling during my quiet time-it allows me to better focus. although i love it, many days I put my time with God to the side, and my life suffers for it as well as my family’s lives.

  6. Every time I try to sit down and listen to God all the distractions and worries of the day creep in my head…kids, work, husband, laundry, what to make for dinner, elderly parents. I’m asking God to give me His peace this year – so I can truly put and keep Him first. I love your blog Karen!

  7. I’m in! The kids and household duties distract me, as well as being tired….it’s hard to do my quiet time with God at bedtime when I’m exhausted from the day.

  8. Everyday has it’s own set of distractions…and daily, with God’s help, I fend them off. Always room for improvement!! thanks for the encouragement.

  9. What DOESN’T distract me, THAT is is question. EVERYTHING!! LIFE!! FAMILY!! However I am VERY happy to say that I am on DAY 14 of Journaling & reading my Bible thanks to encouragement from Adult Sunday School at my church and Proverbs 31 Ministry and of course from God. Each day that I continue, it is becoming something I WANT to do/make time for. THANK YOU GOD!!!!

  10. Ladies, if you don’t win the giveaway, please buy that book, it is really a great book. I didn’t know they came out with one with a journaling section. My friend writes in hers, I will have to get her one of these..or win yours.

  11. I daily get distracted by the daily grind and the COMPUTER. I would love to be more organized and more committed to my relationship with God. Good thing God is full of grace and mercy.

  12. I’m in!!!!! I would love to be encouraged to spend time D-A-I-L-Y with God. I fall SO short of this. Thank you, Jesus, for always being faithful to ME, though!!! I know He is never far away.

  13. Oh the distractions that keep me from God is every day life. Running from one thing to another. These past few weeks I haven’t read my bible daily except for bible study homework and I feel so lost & frazzled.
I would love to win this package:)

  14. Thank you for your devotion, it was very timely for me. Just returned to work from surgery and find that my schedule is creeping back to the ‘old ways’ where my prayers are part of the To Do list and not a true reflection. Perhaps a journal would keep me focused and BE HERE NOW in the moment. Thank you for your inspiration.

  15. loved the devotion that you shared, I opened it b/c I was sitting with my bible study feeling as though I could hear nothing but the roar of cartoons in the background and my looming to-do list in the back of my head. I decided to take a break and seek out a devotion….
thank you and I may just have to find that book if I don’t win it :)
