Love, Pie & Jesus with Guest Angela Perritt
This week in our reading of A Life That Says Welcome (chapters 4-7) we come to the topic of food in chapter 7, Sure, Stay for Supper! In it I tell of my first “company disaster”. Those early days were such a time of trial and error (heavy on the error!).
Looking back, I am thankful I didn’t give up. Romans 12:13 says, “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (NIV 1984)
Sometimes, we just need to keep practicing!
Today we have a guest dropping by to help us with a little idea boost for having company over for dessert. She’s gonna help us practice by providing a no fail recipe and a glimpse into her sweet heart.
Meet my new cyber friend, the Jesus-loving Angela Perritt.
Angela is the wife to her high school sweetheart and mom to her 3 adorable little girls. Some of Angela’s favorite things in life are dancing with her daughters, laughing with her husband and loving her Lord with the amazing life He has given her.
You can find Angela at GoodMorningGirls.org where she encourages women to be in God’s Word on a daily basis through tech accountability groups. Angela’s goal in life is to inspire her children and others to love God greatly with their lives one day at a time.
Now, a great company’s coming dish from her home & heart:
In my opinion, the most important aspect of hospitality is how you make your guests feel the moment you open your home to them. That special moment sets the tone for the whole event.
Open your home like you open your heart. Full of love, a warm smile and an “I’m glad you’re here” embrace!
Now I’ll have to admit, I’m a hugger! I love to love on people! I was once told by some dear friends, who were from another country and whose custom it was NOT to hug the moment you meet them, to please try to restrain myself from hugging their mother the moment I met her. Ha!
You’ll be proud to know that I restrained myself……until after the initial meeting at least!
I love to love on people and I love to welcome people into my home but like most women…..I have an “Achilles heal” in my desire to be hospitable…..my cooking!
I’m just not confident in that area… or at least I wasn’t for many years. I have burnt and thrown away my fair share of meals over the years but I’ve learned the more I try the better I’m getting.
So for those of you who love to open your homes, love to love on your guests the minute they walk across the threshold, but you hold back because you feel you can’t cook, well I have a very special family recipe I’d like to share with you today!
This recipe is super easy and extremely delicious…….it’s perfect for girls like us!
Peanut Butter Pie
1- cup Peanut Butter
1- 8 oz Cream Cheese
1- Can Sweeten Condensed Milk
2- Pints Cool Whip
1- Graham Cracker crust
Mix all together (except 1 pint of Cool Whip….use that pint to cover the top of the pie)
Refrigerate for a few hours
Spread with remaining Cool Whip and garnish as desired.
Voilà! You have a super easy and yummy dessert that people will beg you to make again and again!
Wow! Doesn’t that look fabulous! Got three peanut-butter lovers in our home so we will be trying Angela’s pie recipe soon.
Now, let’s hear from you. What is a favorite pie you like to make (or buy!) at your home? Make plans to serve one soon to guests!
Or, do you too have a “company disaster” story to tell like the one I told in chapter 7? Please do. We can laugh with (not at) you!
One gal will be chosen at random to win a $15 gift card to Target to buy a new-fangled pie pan or casserole dish to use for company :-)
REMEMBER: For this coming Friday’s idea swap and share, be thinking of your best decorating idea, tip, object, theme, centerpiece or DIY project. Bloggers, get a post ready. Others, you can leave yours in the comment section with a description or a link to what it is you like so we all can see. :-)
Finally, we are also interacting over at Karen Ehman’s Book Studies on Facebook. Click here to “like” the page & join us.
One of my favorite pies is Lemonade Pie. It is very easy to make and it is really enjoyable in the summer!!
Thanks for that recipe. I have a lovely almond crust recipe and the peanut butter filling will be amazing in it! Had to laugh though! I live in New Zealand and over here ‘jif’ is a brand of household cleaner! I took a double take look at your recipe once I saw that!!!
Almond crust:
2 C blanched almond flour (ground almonds)
1/4 C butter or ghee
1 egg white
1/4 teaspoon unrefined sea salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mix everything together until it resembles cornflour – crumbly …
Spoon into the tart shell pan, press down to form the shell.
Bake – about 35 mins – until it turns golden brown.
Allow it to cool and set fully before filling. Unmold it just prior to serving.
Enjoy!
I love Marie Callenders pies, my favorite is cherry, to serve with vanilla ice cream!
My company disaster story involves shrimp and a crockpot. They shouldn’t ever go together, or if they do, then the shrimp should be added to the seafood gumbo about 20 minutes before it is served, and NOT all day long.
Yummy…I am drooling just reading about all these pies. Our family favorite pie is an Orange Cream Pie. It is so simple. Mix one box of orange jello (as directed) then fold in one 8 ounce container of cool whip (the real thing…less fat version not so good). When good and mixed, pour into a graham cracker crust or an chocolate graham cracker crust. Yummy :)
My disaster happened while my hubby and I were dating. I tried to make krumkrake’s (a norwegin dessert cookie) for my hubby to be’s grandmother. She is norwegin and I was trying ever so hard to impress her. I had forgotten to put the vanilla in the recipe and they tasted horrible. What a bad impression I felt I had left on her. I tried again after we were married and they were much better. She was kind enough to tell me that I had redeemed myself.
Happy pie making…be blessed because you are a blessing to someone!
Smiles & Blessings,
Robin :)
Favorite pie would have to be apple or pecan.
Have had a couple interesting experiences with taking desserts places. Hadn’t made a pie in a while & offerred to take a pecan pie for Thanksgiving dinner few years back. It didn’t look right but couldn’t reach anyone that it wasn’t too early to call. When came time to eat it found out it wasn’t done. later tried to cook it longer but that pie never did become anything but liquid with nuts on top. last year made a coconut cake to take to my aunt’s for Easter (white cake with white frosting covered with coconut). For some reason the cake did not rise so we had a very flat cake, though it did taste ok.
I enjoy making pies, coconut cream, pecan, blueberry, lenon swirl to name a few.
My first thanksgiving dinner I was making for family and friends in our new home (that wasn’t so new), as a new bride of 6 months—I just pulled my beautifully golden brown turkey out of the oven and I felt drips from the kitchen ceiling. My husband had been taking a last minute shower in the bathroom (above the kitchen)…the bath tub was leaking into my kitchen—-more importantly right onto my stove, into the turkey, the sweet potato casserole, etc etc…DISASTER!!! That was the beginning of our first remodel…..UGH!!! Happy Thanksgiving :)
Would you believe I have never made a pie?? I’m not a huge pie lover, but my favorite one to buy (and eat) is pumpkin.
We had only been married a few weeks, and had very little money. My husband’s brother, sister in law and their 3 teenage children came to see us. Of course we asked them to supper. The problem was that we only had groceries enough for two people and NO money. So I made a mexican casserole and some salad. When I look back and think about the size of that tiny casserole compared to the full table I feel a blush creeping up! I can only imagine that they left and went straight to a restaurant! Incedentally, they have never been back in 8 years. Hmmmm… Maybe they are still hungry?
Pie I like? It’s in the frozen foods at the grocery – I think the brand is Edwards (or maybe Mrs. Edwards) and it’s key lime pie! It’s so yum (let thaw completely) and great for spring! Thanks for tbe giveaway, Jenny C.
I make a chocolate peanut butter pie. It’s so yummy! And simple.
Our favorite is apple pie with Breyer’s Vanilla Ice Cream. We also love apple crisp. My girls (ages 5 & 6) love to mix the crumb topping while I peel and slice the apples. :-)
I am not a great pie maker! I usually buy the Mrs. Fields turtle pie (frozen) from the grocery store and serve it. It’s always a huge hit.! My husband LOVES peanut butter and chocolate though, so I am going to attempt to make the peanut butter pie in a chocolate crust this weekend :-)
I have made the peanut butter pie without the shell when we were doing low-carb, it was a life saver! My disaster continues to be pies when making my own pie crust, never tastes like Moms or flaky! I end up using Pillsbury refrigerator piecrusts!
My favorite pie to make: Dutch Apple Pie.
I have been making this delicious pie for over 25 years now. It has a nice flaky crust made with butter. I use Gala apples (or another tart apple). My husband and sons always think they are the ‘favorite’ when it is made. One year, at our church youth pie auction, it sold for $600.00. It is a good fund raiser and I love to serve it warm with vanilla ice cream to my guests.
Hi Diane, I started making my mother-in-law’s homemade pie crust 2 years ago with Crisco, and my girls and I fell in love with baking pies. I would love to try a butter crust. Can you please share the recipe? Thanks much!
My funny pie story involves my Dad. As we were growing up he was a pastor. Since he pastored 3 churches in different towns at the same time for a couple of years (alternating Sundays and 1 afternoon service) we often ate Sunday lunch in people’s homes. At one lady’s house she served coconut pie which my Dad HATES!, but he ate it anyway and commented about how good it was. Well, of course, from then on if we ate at her house she served coconut pie!
Things are different now. I rarely hear of anyone inviting the pastor for dinner. It seems that Sundays are not much of a rest day anymore.
My favourite company pie is peanut butter ice cream pie. Mix a chocolate oreo crust into a 9″ ie pan. (1 1/3 c crumbs, 1/4 c melted margarine.) Bake 325 for 10 minutes. Cool. Then mix 4 cups vanilla ice cream, 1/2c chunky peanut butter and 2 pkgs chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups. Pour into pie crust. Freeze for 6 hours. Garnish with chopped peanuts and chocolate sauce…you knew there had to be chocolate somewhere!!!
My worst company disaster was when I made ahead my turkey, which turned out fine. I had no room in my fridge to store the turkey for 24 hours while we were away overnight, with company coming for Thanksgiving the next day. My husband suggested wrapping the turkey in emergency foil blankets, and putting it into the shed. Sounded fine. But…the weather warmed up while we were gone, and I panicked. Too afraid to serve my ‘warm turkey’ I rushed to the store and cooked up a fresh chicken while we all lingered for a late late thanksgiving chicken dinner.
I love some oreo pie!! It’s really easy and delicious!!!
So funny that the recipe shared is a peanut butter pie. I had a FAIL last weekend when I decided to use a peanut butter parfait recipe I found on a blog. The ingredients made sense, and they turned out beautiful, but the ratio was wrong – waaaay too much peanut butter! I know better than to test a recipe on guests … luckily they are all friends, and we had fun laughing about it.
I love to make “Banoffee Mess” from Claire Robinson on 5 ingredient fix. Its a banana toffee pie. Very yummy!
My favorite is apple pie with cinamon hmmmm, j use to bake this when i have guests
This peanut butter pie is one of my favorites! I always use a chocolate crust & sprinkle chocolate shavings on top & it’s a girl’s dream pie. And Nestle’s Chocolate Chip Pie recipe has been a family favorite for years. It’s my go-to pie recipe. As far as bad cooking experiences, can I count the people I cook for as bad experiences? Lol, my father in law was notorious for rating people’s food and had no problem telling people what spices were missing, how a little more salt or pepper would have made it better, etc. My first year of cooking Thanksgiving for them he kept telling me that if I messed up he had a pork tenderloin waiting in the wings, no pun intended. :) By the time Thanksgiving week came around he had me so paranoid I called the Butterball hotline to make sure I was doing everything right! I asked the kind woman I talked to if she had ever watched “Everybody Loves Raymond.” When she said yes I told her that if you combine Marie with Frank’s attitude, that’s my father in law. We got a good laugh out of it & the turkey, thankfully, turned out ok. And we didn’t have to use the pork tenderloin.
I like to serve peach pie, it is my favorite!
A recent hiccup I had in hospitality was just a couple weeks ago. Another family was coming over to discuss/explore homeschooling, so I had prepared to talk about that and share our experiences. In the midst of that I forgot to start dessert in the morning, so I had to scrap the breadsticks to accompany homemade spaghetti sauce in the interest of having brownies instead. I simply did not say anything, and nobody noticed. But as a skilled cook this was bothersome.
There was also the time my roast had absolutely no flavor to speak of, but I am still too humiliated to speak of it! :-)
Rhubarb pie. Miss it so much. Not much rhubarb to be found in Texas.
