One of my favorite Christmas memories happened one year as a result of a family tradition. Each year my mother withholds baby Jesus from her nativity set until Christmas Morning. One year, when her firstborn grandson was about three years of age, he asked her, “Grandmamma, where is baby Jesus?”

“He’s not been born yet. She explained to Patrick. “Jesus comes on Christmas Day. Then, you’ll find Him lying right here,” she added while pointing to the manger.

Like years past, Christmas came. Mom and Dad’s house was full of excitement as each family member arrived with their arms full of presents. We expected to exchange gifts and enjoy a time for food, fun, and celebration. Patrick expected something different. He came running into the house shouting, “Is He here, yet? Is He here? Has Jesus come?”

Mother took Patrick over to the nativity and there, cradled in the manger, was baby Jesus. He had come just as she had promised.

At the age of three, Patrick taught me to anticipate the Presence of Christ during Christmas—while I shop, decorate, wrap, bake and worship.

Christ’s presence may go unnoticed by the world, but for me, along with heaven, a few shepherds, three wise men, and others who have made room in their hearts, can experience all the glorious wonder that He brings when taking time to acknowledge His Presence.

  1. My favorite in the nativity scene is the donkey. I think about that little donkey…without him would Mary have been able to arrive and have the baby Jesus in the manger? The story would have been so different without him. The donkey was a strong and faithful animal.

  2. All of them are special to me in their own way, but if I had to choose just one, I think it would be Mary. She was a young girl with such strength and responsibility.

  3. Can I say the sheep? They remind me of two things…one that He came as the Lamb of God…and two that we are His sheep…the sheep of the Good Shepherd…

  4. I think Mary. She is just such a symbol of strength and humility, of servitude and love. I admire her and believe we could all learn from her – the one who found favor with God. That is what we all strive for. Thank you Mary for showing us how to be holy, pleasing woman of God.

  5. my favorite person in the nativity scene is Joseph. if he was my son, I would be praying hard for him. Joseph had to carry all the stress for the family and remain calm and keep trusting God!

  6. Mary…because she was so willing to be used by God. “Let it be to me according to your word.” I wonder how she felt when she held Jesus in her arms for the first time!

  7. Mary–what a crazy experience she had, and yet, she was still faithful. She trusted God through all that!! WOW! I wanna be like her!

  8. Wow! It is hard to pick just one! I will have to say Mary! Being a Mother is so precious and being the Mother of Jesus is beyond words! Also God is very special to me since he is Jesus’s Father and without Him we would not even have our precious Jesus! :-)

  9. Oh, my, I can’t believe all the comments that have been left…I am a math teacher and I think I must do a survey, some fractions, decimals and percents with this!!! Wonder what kids would pick as opposed to women? Well, I collect nativity sets and so this is hard, but I will say the angel! And just a note…if you have young children, have them draw the nativity every year…it is so neat to see their drawings year after year!!!

  10. So so so loved this tradition! Wow! I plan on using this in the future. In the meantime, I plan on letting my sister know so that she might start doing this with my nephews. I think my favorite character was Mary. I can only imagine how it must have felt to see God’s faithfulness show itself and to have affirmation from the visit of the shepherds.

  11. Mary, how confusing and scared she must have been and yet she responds – “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” If we could all give our lives so freely to the Lord to be used for His service. What a beautiful picture of submission to His will.
