One of my favorite Christmas memories happened one year as a result of a family tradition. Each year my mother withholds baby Jesus from her nativity set until Christmas Morning. One year, when her firstborn grandson was about three years of age, he asked her, “Grandmamma, where is baby Jesus?”

“He’s not been born yet. She explained to Patrick. “Jesus comes on Christmas Day. Then, you’ll find Him lying right here,” she added while pointing to the manger.

Like years past, Christmas came. Mom and Dad’s house was full of excitement as each family member arrived with their arms full of presents. We expected to exchange gifts and enjoy a time for food, fun, and celebration. Patrick expected something different. He came running into the house shouting, “Is He here, yet? Is He here? Has Jesus come?”

Mother took Patrick over to the nativity and there, cradled in the manger, was baby Jesus. He had come just as she had promised.

At the age of three, Patrick taught me to anticipate the Presence of Christ during Christmas—while I shop, decorate, wrap, bake and worship.

Christ’s presence may go unnoticed by the world, but for me, along with heaven, a few shepherds, three wise men, and others who have made room in their hearts, can experience all the glorious wonder that He brings when taking time to acknowledge His Presence.

  1. That would have to be the shepherds… they were the least, but were able to see the most! They knew when he was born and the were able to witness it all! However, as a mother of three boys, I believe that Mary’s faith was amazing…. beyond amazing!

  2. AS a mother I want to automatically say Mary, but if you think about the leap of faith Joseph took it is truly amazing.

  3. My favorite character in the nativity is Joseph. He was faithful to take care of Mary and honor God in their miraculous situation.

  4. This year my answer would have to be the donkey. I know that sounds funny but my daughter is playing the part in her school play. She was worried someone would have to ride on her back and was so thankful when she was told that wasn’t allowed at her preschool. It gave us lots of laughs for sure. But seriously, we often forget the beauty of the donkey. A lowly creature, not one we hold in high esteem. Called to do a job day in and day out for food,c are and shelter. But royal enough to carry a King. At his birth and at His death. Just another example of how God uses even the least of these to carry out His perfect plan. Thanks be to God that he reminds me He can use anything to do His will.

Thanks for the opportunity to share!

  5. Hard to choose just one. Probably Mary though. She accepted what she was called to do the miraculous, not really knowing the outcome of it all.

  6. Oh. this is a hard one. Mary and Joseph were so obedient to God’s will.Mary is usually given all the attention, so I will say Joseph. He provided and protected her the best way he knew how. With God’s help. he was able to support Mary. What an example for father’s today!

  7. The Angel, how it is up above and watches over the family and all who come to greet baby Jesus, just beautiful. :)

  8. Joseph is my favorite. Here is a man who took on a responsibility to be the earthly father to the King of Kings. What an amazing responsibility! I am in awe of the faithfulness that Joseph showed to both His God and Mary.

  9. I think Joseph all too often gets overlooked. He was obedient to God as well a fact I overlooked as well until recently. He stood by Mary and Jesus. I wish we knew a little bit more about Joseph.
