I love when I see someone who has found a passion and is using it to help others.

My friend Courtney DeFeo is one such woman.

Her site is a little online corner that provides hope, inspiration and creative ideas in the thrilling journey called motherhood. She wants moms to forget the cheerios that crunch under your toes and believe your kids can light up the world for Jesus.

I’m turning over the keyboard to Courtney today while I steal away to work on my next book. She is offering a great giveaway so be sure to watch for it in her post. Now, here’s Courtney:

I remember the moment. Ella was four and Larson was two. I was having an out of body moment or as we say now … I was coming “unglued.”

Both girls were disobeying or “not making wise choices.” They would not do ONE thing I asked them to do. Can you even imagine? A two-year-old and a four-year-old being defiant? And, I think Ella smacked Larson or something absurd and I started to explain WHY we don’t do such things.

I was exhausted and I was speechless. I was so OVER the “because I told you so”… and I knew I needed some key scriptures in my heart and hers.

At the same time, God was doing a work in me. I was sorting through prayers and nudges about my career that I left behind, my identity and how He might use all of my past experience, gifts and talents to serve Him. Full story here.

I had heard of folks putting scripture to the alphabet – and I thought that would help mine memorize it! And, this would help me have a common language with the girls.

I looked some up online that were printouts and I didn’t really love the verses chosen or the format. I wanted them to be really relevant in my home (nice way to say “stylish please.”) I wanted them out on display like décor, but useful enough that we could “teach” and “train” as we went about the day.

So, combine the transplant God was doing on my heart and my desire to make some changes in my home and you get the first product that was launched on LilLightOMine.com (now CourtneyDeFeo.com).

ABC Scripture Cards were designed for mom’s style and the child’s heart. I thought my friends and their friends might buy them, but I had no idea that thousands would buy them in the first year. The thought of God’s work coming alive in homes all over is so thrilling.

Ella is now six and knows all 26 by heart. And so do I! Larson knows half (4 years old). We have a common language that has helped me tremendously in parenting. They are still children and still defiant – but I believe God’s word never returns void. I am praying and trusting these will stay with her for life and surface in her heart and thoughts when she needs them most.

For instance, when someone was mean to her at school …we could easily talk about the appropriate response.

When mine were scared at night, I quickly had the words to sooth their heart. He does care and He will protect you!

When they are worried ALREADY about their looks – or when they make a great choice, I remind them what God is focused on.

I am beyond passionate about empowering moms and changing little lives. We are all in this together. I am sharing 10 Ways To Bring Faith to Life In Your Home today on my blog. Scripture Memory is just one of them and this product is not the only answer.

Thank you Karen for giving me this space to speak about the God I adore and the little lights in our homes – our kids that can shine so bright for His glory.

  1. I love this idea…we are using the ABC Scripture Book with my youngest, who has cancer, and he knows 23 of them so far…we have found that having those verses for him to recall when he is feeling poorly really helps! These would be a great tool to learn additional verses for both of my boys.

  2. The ABC verses are fantastic! I would love to win them for a friend of mine who has recently adopted 3 little ones and also is starting her own daycare soon. She would absolutely be thrilled to get these!

  3. Don’t remember the first verse I memorized because it was so long ago. But one I remember clearly as a child as remembering and understanding was John 3:16. In my young adulthood, Psalm 37:4, ” Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” carried me thru.

  4. This set is so cute, smart, and adorable. The first verse I ever learned was “For dust you were and to dust you shall return.” It taught me to be humble and squelch my prideful desires. I would really love to win this alphabet set :)

  5. Our four year old has been working on scripture memorization for a little over a year now. He has 8 verses memorized, and they are longer scriptures for a little guy. I enjoy how proud he is when he recites them to other people, and when we talk about what they mean. I love the structure your products offer. Thank you for blessing others with your creativity!!!

  6. What a great idea! And the cards are so beautiful, too! I don’t remember the first verse I learned, but my girls learned John 3:16 first.

  7. I used to recite this verse when waking my kiddos up for school. I now have the privilege of teaching it to my sweet grandchildren. Your cards are beautiful! Psalm 118: “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

  8. T- trust in The Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6.

I love those cards! I am a kindergarten teacher assistant and I would love to put these on my desk for the students to see and possibly ask about them. Good way for me to share and display even in public school.

  9. To be completely honest I just started my journey with God. A very good friend of mine got me started on reading the Bible, so I haven’t gotten to the point (yet!) of memorizing verses. But I read a lot of the comments and have jotted down quit a few of them so that I can look them up. Thanks for a chance to win :)

  10. I’m not sure when or what verse, but I do remember memorizing them in Sunday school preschool class…and when I was 7 or 8, my favorite verse was (still is) Psalms 23!

  11. The first verse I actually worked at memorizing was I Corinthians 13:4-8. I was trying to change my parenting style and used this when I was losing my cool. The first verse for my kids was simply God makes everything possible. Not quite a straight quote but served us at the time.

  12. The first verse I remember learning was John 3:16. But I have an earlier memory of learning the books of the bible. Aunty Kay (our sunday school teacher) promised that if we memorized them all she would give us a sweet the following week. That was more than enough motivation for me – I memorized the whole lot off pat in a week, and the following sunday… she had forgotten all about it. I’m still glad to this day that I memorized them, and have slowly over the years managed to forgive her ;) Those ABC scripture cards would be very well used in our home.

  13. I’m not positive about the first verse I learned but I think it was John 3:16. I am an Awana leader. I love your idea. Anything that helps a child hide the words of the Bible in their hearts is a winner!

  14. I don’t recall the first verse I ever memorized but I remember one that carried me through a very tough time. I lost my beautiful wedding ring and was distraught. Unable to sleep or function. A friend gave me the greatest medicine: Philippians 4:4-8 (Rejoice in the Lord always…Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present you requests to God…). This verse became the best sleeping pill and continues to help me make it through until my ring is found. Experiencing the power of this verse has made losing my ring worth the sadness!

  15. I think John 3:16 must have been the first one I memorized. I taught Ps. 23 to my oldest son as his first verses. I did teach school so those were not the first verses I ever taught a child but those were so many I can’t recall.
I love this creative and attractive idea and would LOVE to win it! = )

  16. oh what a creative, beatiful and classy idea- these cards. I bet they fit in any type of design (office or home ) and make a beautiful gift! I will keep your site in mind for the the next special occasion :)
I think the very first verse I memorized was Jeremiah 29:11 (For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.) back when I was about 18y.o.
Then of course there was John 3:16
The one that I still have to perfect in my memory is about the Fruit of the Spirit (I tend to lose one or two whenever I try to recall it). Galatians 5:22

  17. John 3:16. I did not come to salvation until the age of 27! I soon realized that I was missing out so much on God’s love and mercy and Jesus’s sacrifice for my sin. I have now known Him more years than I’ve not. Praising The Lord!

  18. My son, Noah, is 2 years old and has memorized a handful of Bible verses! He loves saying them and is eager to learn. The first one we helped him memorize is Romans 8:38, “Nothing can separate us from God’s love.” He also knows John 3:16 and Philippians 4:13. We would love a set of the ABC scripture cards to continue him in this journey of learning, memorizing, believing, and applying God’s truths and promises to his life!

  19. The first verse we taught our little boy was 2 Samuel 22:33 God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect.
These cards are beautiful and I would love to teach them to both of my kids.
