For Dad: Peach Cobbler & The Warrior Weekend

For Father’s Day: a recipe for peach cobbler and a plan for raising godly men.

I love retro cookbooks. I found a great one recently on Ebay for just a few bucks.

It was published in 1956 by General Motors, the company my brother and my hubby both work for.

Here is a man-pleasing recipe for dad from this book:

Peach Cobbler

1 C sugar

2 T cornstarch

1/2 t cinnamon

1 C water

2 T butter

5 C sliced, peeled peaches

1  1/2 C biscuit mix {Bisquik or similar}

4 T sugar

2/3 C coffee creamer {half and half}

2 T grated orange peel

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Blend 1 C sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon in a large saucepan and add water. Bring to boil while stirring. Remove from heat. Add butter & peaches. Pour into a greased shallow baking dish. Combine biscuit mix and 2 T sugar and cream. Drop dough into 6 mounds on top of peaches around the edge of the pan. Combine remaining 2 T sugar and orange peel and sprinkle on top. Bake 25 minutes watching well so as not to burn. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

That was for dad’s stomach. Now something for his spirit:

The Warrior Weekend is a resource to help dads raise boys to be Godly men. Written as a devotional, it is full of biblical wisdom specific to boys, applicable stories of brave men, and adventurous activity ideas or a weekend away.

The Warrior Weekend is a great resource for helping dads and sons explore God’s Word and God’s world together.

My friend Ruth Schwenk’s husband wrote The Warrior Weekend because he wants sons to grow up clearly understanding that God has wired them different than girls – a lot different! This is not by accident, but by design.

God has created boys to grow up and be Godly men for His purposes and plans for the world.

  1. Vintage cookbooks are so worthwhie and healthy. The Warrior Weekend I want for my grandson-in-law to teach to our great grandson. He is an excellent father and I know he will use what he learns in The Weekend Warrior.

  2. Hi, Karen, I love peach cobbler and it is a stand-by here in Georgia, the Peach State! I want to share my recipe for it as well; it’s sooo easy to remember: Melt 1 stick of butter in a 2-quart dish inside a 350 degree oven. Mix 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of flour; then, stir in 1 cup of milk. Pour the mixture into the dish on top of the melted butter. Pour two cups of peaches (or blueberries) into the center of the pan.Do NOT stir. Bake for an hour at 350. So it’s 1 stick of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of milk, and 2 cups of fruit. Enjoy!

  3. If you can ever find a Farm Journal’s Country Cookbook, 1959 or 1972 (expanded), that is the very best. They also had a good one called Cooking for Company. I use them all the time–haven’t found a bad recipe yet.
