I don’t think Christmas would be complete without an annual turkey stuffing recipe, do you? This is a recipe that was passed down from my grandma to my mom and now to my sisters and their children.

Ask my husband what his favorite Christmas dish is–hands down he’ll say it’s my turkey stuffing. It’s a family favorite and a must-have at every Christmas and thanksgiving dinner!

I hope you enjoy it!

Mom’s Turkey Stuffing

Ingredients:

1 lb. Pork sausage

Breadcrumbs from one loaf of bread (cube and toast in the oven)

1 Onion (diced)

1 pinch of ginger

1 T sage

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 diced Celery stalk

1 c turkey broth or water

*Don’t tell my mom, but I also add a box of chicken flavored Stove Top Stuffing to the mix, just to give it that extra kick of flavor. But it tastes amazing either way!

turkey dinner vegetable detailProcedure:

To make bread crumbs, cube a loaf of bread and toast them on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. Check them often so they don’t over toast.

Mix ingredients together and press into baking pan. Add a little water if necessary to further moisten.

Bake at 350°F for 30 – 40 min.

Stuffing can either be baked separately or stuffed into a turkey or chicken for cooking, although I’ve always made it separately.

You are loved by an almighty God,

Darlene Schacht

  1. We are dressing people (served on the side) versus stuffing (in the bird). I’m not sure why, except I seem to remember a disastrous year when the turkey wasn’t cooked thoroughly at dinner time, because of a failed experiment with stuffing the bird! I love a dressing with fruit added, like dried cranberries, apples, etc

  2. My stuffing comes from one of my dear Friends, and we call it Sherry stuffing. I didn’t make it this year for Thanksgiving, and my daughter reminded me that we cannot skip it again.

  3. I LOVE my mom’s dressing! There is “no recipe” so I have had to watch her make it and write it down as best I can. I like it raw and cooked! It’s the best thing we have at Thanksgiving!

  4. I’m a Stovetop fan, but that’s mostly because we only have it for major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc… It’s really good when you pair it with cooked ham. I may have to try this recipe and combine the two like you.

  5. Having been born in Asia, it was kind of a challenge at first to make stuffing. However, since I love to cook I got to learn how to do it. The most unique stuffing ingredient I have encountered and used was chicken liver with cranberries. It was yum!

  6. To be honest, I am a Stovetop fan. :) Maybe it’s because we don’t have it often….I’m not sure. At least it’s easy!!

  7. I’m not a very good cook, so I usually buy boxed stuffing mix. This recipe seems easy enough that I’ll give it a try this year. I’m sure my family would appreciate it!! I love stuffing though!!

  8. Thank you for the new stuffing recipe. Just the smell of the onions and giblets sauteing in the pan get my taste buds salivating. I add mushrooms to the stuffing and next year, I’m thinking of adding green chilis.

  9. I love stuffing! My Mom’s recipe is the only one I will eat. She uses the Pepperidge Farm bread stuffing and then doctors it up- really delicious. I can do with all the other trimmings as long as I have my stuffing!

  10. I love my mom’s dressing recipe. It’s so simple and yummy: cornbread, dried bread, chicken stock, and eggs. She’d make pans of it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She made another pan and added mushrooms for my grandpa and uncle because they liked it that way.

  11. One of the most unique stuffings I’ve tasted was one with cranberries in it. The worst was one with giblets. I learned that I don’t like giblets! My mother-in-law made one of the best stuffings, similar to Darlene’s recipe, but no sausage was in it. I’m anxious to try making Darlene’s with sausage. Thanks so much for sharing!

  12. Stuffing is our main go-to food not only for Thanksgiving but for other meals. It’s an easy to make and filling side dish. There’s something about the smells when making stuffing that brings your heart ‘home’ even when you aren’t there. A great comfort food.

  13. I didn’t even know what homemade stuffing was until I had Thanksgiving dinner at my in-laws. We were an instant kind of family so never knew what I was missing out on! She uses an old recipe found in her Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook.

  14. My MIL makes traditional stuffing, so I let her!! When my side of the family does our dinner, the stuffing recipe is courtesy of ‘Stove Top’ and it is WONDERFUL. That is what I grew up with, and I love it!

  15. I tried a new stuffing recipe along with my traditional one this year! It was delicious, apples. walnuts, dried cherries…Yum!

  16. My family loves my mother’s stuffing recipe, also; and, like you, I have made some modifications. I never liked stuffing as a child. I have learned since then that I had a moderate alergy to black pepper, something that my 14 year old daughter has inherited. So I omit the pepper. Mom’s recipe has an egg and milk mixture poured over all, and we use parsley instead of ginger. My husband had to skip the stuffing this Thanksgiving because he is currently avoiding wheat. Time will tell if this is a permanent situation. In that case, I would love to have a gluten free recipe! He felt pretty left out, but survived.

  17. I LOVE turkey stuffing….eating it for sure, but i never dared to try to make one myself. Thank you for sharing your recipe. When I read it, it gave me a little motivational push to give it a try- so hopefully I’ll have the courage to and then will know why your husband loves it so much too! :)
