Please help me welcome Pie Baker Extraordinaire, Linda Hundt, founder of Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe in DeWitt, Michigan. Although her 3 bakeries are limited to Michigan at this time, her pies are widely acclaimed around the USA. She is the author of the cookbook Sweetie-licious Pies: Eat Pie, Love Life. 

{Fun fact: Linda and & used to cheerlead for cross-town schools in high school so I recognized her the first time I went in her shop. Now, we’ve become friends as adults. She even let me use her remodeled farm house for a photo shoot recently for an upcoming, top secret project!} 


Linda has been featured in numerous national, state, and local television segments, magazine, and newspapers including Country LivingMidwest Living, and Parade. Linda is a sought-after keynote speaker: speaking on faith, dreams, and love, as well as giving pie baking demonstrations for hundreds of people at a time.

She resides in a century-old farmhouse with her sweet husband. The Hundts have two beautiful daughters. Linda believes that Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe can change the world one pie at a time through good food, good pies and good deeds and if you eat pie, you will inevitably, love life.

918BvbQYpnLAs long as I can remember I have loved to bake.  It was part of my upbringing and I have so many wonderful memories associated with the sights, smells, and tastes of Christmas. Today I am sharing one of my favorite recipes with you.  This is a wonderful cookie that my sweet mommy made all the time, as I know they were her favorite too! To make them a little fresher I have added some lemon zest to the original recipe. The secret to these and all cookies really, is to under bake them! I hope you enjoy making Mom’s Lemon Ginger Balls and making your own “sweet” memories this Christmas!

Mom McComb’s Lemon Ginger Balls

1 C. sugar

¾ C. Crisco shortening

1 egg

¼ C. Blackstrap molasses

2 C. flour

2 tsp. baking soda

1 ¼ tsp. cinnamon

1 ¼ tsp ginger

1 tsp. of lemon zest

Pinch of salt

Cream the sugar and shortening together. Add egg, molasses, and lemon zest in sugar and shortening mixture, mix well. Whisk flour, salt, soda, spices together. Add to other ingredients. Mix together well, but do not over­beat. Roll dough into small balls and roll in sugar, raw or granulated. Bake at 350 degree preheated oven for 8 ­ 11 minutes.

  1. we always played lots of family games during Christmas season and took lots of breaks to eat all of the cookies mom made!

  2. So many lovely memories around holiday treats. Thanksgiving brought Squash Chiffon pie and Nesselrode pie, while Christmas was a flurry of baking cookies and sweet breads to give as gifts for friends, neighbors,and far-flung relatives. Our neighbors gifted us with Nisu (Finnish coffee bread), my best friend contributed Pepparkakor (Swedish cookies), and my mother made German Stollen and a meringue/fruit filled kuchen.
    So many of these memory-filled treats are on my ‘love to bake’ list, and there are so few recipients – I try to limit to just a few things to bake each year.

  3. I loved getting my Grandma’s candy boxes every year. She would include divinity, peanut butter fudge (my favorite), walnut fudge, plain fudge, sugar cookies, peanut brittle (best around) and her cinnamon rolls. That was always my favorite gift from her.

  4. I love my mom’s Cherry Cream Pie.
    Tart pie cherries, almonds in the crust, oh, my!
    Making pies is one of my favorite things to do. Now with little ones it’s less peaceful, but definitely more fun!

  5. I LOVE Pie! All kinds, but especially a good fruit pie of any type – of course Apple is my favorite! I’d choose pie over cake any day.

  6. We used to gather boysenberries for pies but would end up eating most of them before we got home and would have to go out and get more

  7. Our family loves pies : apple, chocolate, coconut creme, cherry, pecan, pumpkin, lemon…. and not just at the holidays. We like them for birthdays instead of cake!

  8. I learned to make pies from my grandmother. I’m so grateful for our time in the kitchen together. Her peach pie was especially delicious. I’ve taken over the pie baking in the family now since she’s past.

  9. I loved my grandma’s egg custard pie and would stand on a stool in the kitchen to watch her make it. It was the best!

  10. What an great giveaway. Excited to try your recipe. Always looking for new sweets to try. Love that you are from Michigan. (Lansing is my hometown.) A sweet memory: making spritz cookies with my mom, every year. Trying them on my own in college and I think once? or twice after I was married. Thinking of finding my great aunts spritz cookie kit and my moms’, (i know I have both of them somewhere….) and teaching my girls and 10yo son to make them. And my grandson. Don’t think I did that with my older boys. :-( What a great giveaway. Love collecting cookbooks. Going thru Pinterest/googling is easier than a real cookbook, but I still love to sit and read and find recipes in real cookbooks.

  11. I have been following each of the 12 Days posts and have commented on each one so far (had to come back to do this post:)
    I LOVE whipped cream-especially the real deal, made the morning of the holiday dinner. Yum!!! I only get it once or ,maybe,twice a year. I don’t eat a ton of sweets but the whipped cream, and pecan pie are two of my favorites.

  12. Coconut Cream Pie — my Aunt made the BEST. She made that at all the holidays and Mom made a fresh coconut cake. My Grandmother made her pecan pies. I got the recipe for the coconut pie but it has never came out like my aunts. I’ll keep trying.

  13. Our holiday baking tradition is making sugar cookies. When I got married my mother in law shared with me her sugar cookie recipe which is the best I have ever tasted! Now my daughters and I make them every year!
