Welcome to you joining by finding your way here from my Proverbs 31 Ministries devotion today called When Your Child Makes a Bad Choice {To read it, click here but be sure to come back for the giveaway!}

d10.21

The concept of this devotion was taken from my new book that releases in two weeks. Hoodwinked: Ten Myths Moms Believe and Why We All Need to Knock It Off  helps moms to stop believing the lies that mess with our mothering in the worst of ways. One of these lies is “My child’s bad choice means I am a bad mom.” No it doesn’t. Not when your child is throwing a tantrum in the middle of the grocery store nor when they wind up in trouble in their teens.

If you preorder the book by midnight November 2, you get tons of freebies including sample chapters of the book, screen savers for your phone, a collection of retro family recipes, life planning sheets to help you get your act together, a short ebook on praying for your kids, and more! AND if you order it from Proverbs 31 Ministries,  you get an additional bonus downloadable PDF entitled “On My Knees & In My Heart; 5 Mini-Retreats for Moms.”  This resource provides moms with five different, guided sessions to get alone with God in order to rest, reflect, renew, and get back at the difficult yet oh-so-holy job of motherhood. Features include prayers, scripture study, reflection questions, journaling sections, and practical, doable ideas for deepening a mom’s relationship with her heavenly Father. This downloadable PDF  will enable you to go from crazy to calm, helping you to better love and care for your family. {And remember– it is only available to those who purchase through Proverbs 31.}

Now for the details.

Be sure to follow them carefully because you need to email/forward a copy of your receipt to claim your free bundle and do it again to a second address if you ordered from Proverbs 31 to get your bonus PDF with the mini-retreats for moms.

  1. Mother of one 13yr old girl…and am so thankful for the wise and wonderful godly women in my life who have gone before me and encourage me. When I am frustrated, they remind me of the sacrifices I have made as a single mother and all the “amazing” things I have done in raising my daughter…that being said, why do I still wonder “where did I go wrong”? I thought the sacrifices I made were suppose to pre-empt this ensuing war…can’t wait for your book Karen! Your devotion from Proverbs 31 was sooo timely!

  2. I am blessed to be the mom of twin daughters who are 3. I am just starting the point where my children are making mistakes that get them into trouble with other people and it is harder than I ever thought not to question my parenting. That being said, due to the pregnancy of my daughters being high risk, being born 2 months early, spending weeks in the NICU, having some medical issues due to being premature and me being a first time mom through all of this. I have dealt with a lot of mommy guilt over their birth and have had to due a lot of soul searching and praying to get past these feelings and there are still time I struggle with it. Know that I am one who feels guilt easily, I would love to have something to help me get past some of the guilt I will feel as my daughters grow-up and make their own choices good and bad. I know, they will have to learn from these choices to become the women God wants them to be but it will come with some pain. With this book I maybe able to accept their choices and help them learn from their choices, instead of fighting my own guilt.

  3. You have no idea how timely this was today. Feeling very discouraged with my youngest. Been in the principals office every day this week and I just don’t know what to do.

    My oldest is Caleb and he is 8. He’s in 2’nd grade. My youngest is Lucas and he is 6. In K.

  4. My husband and I have 4 children ages: 21, 19, 15, and 13. I also have put on the mom burden of thinking my children’s choices reflect who I am as a mom. It is so easy for me to find reasons to think I have failed. Being a perfectionist, and trying so hard to be a good mother, I tend to take problems that are going on as something I did wrong personally. I think having this opportunity to receive this book would be awesome. Thank you so much.

  5. I’m a mom of 4 ( 2 B 2G )
    (25,22,21,17)
    I’ve done my early years time and would love to release the guilt of everything I did wrong.

  6. Thank you for such great reminders and no other perfect way said than the example provided. I am a mother of four, ages 19, almost 17, 13 and 11. Just yesterday evening I feel that my motherhood was tested by one of my children. Right before I went to sleep I asked, “God where did I go wrong to fail as a mom?” This morning, as I woke up and read the e-mail I received, I felt the answer to my question was right in front of me. I thank you for this. The timing was perfect and loved how my question was answered. May you all have a blessed day!

  7. I have two daughters, ages 16 and 13 .. The last couple of years with the oldest have been the most trying , so far .. driving, dating, hormones … LOTS of prayers sent up for her and myself!!

  8. Hi there. My name is Jen, I have 2 kids (one boy (8) one girl (12). I believe I am always hard on myself, however this past month has particularly tough. A month ago, I was that mom that was being called from the teacher with my son making a very bad choice. I as mortified. I worried about him being scarred and now a deviant. I worried that I had too much on my plate and had been parenting poorly. I was embarrassed. I worried there would be stigma, but through much prayer and conversation I no longer believe him to be headed down a deviant road. However, I do also realize that he is a pusher of boundaries and we had loosened our boundaries. But still a month later my fight or flight response has still not calmed much. There are things that I should just be able to pray through but I stay more panicky and worried the other shoe is going to drop. I just keep trucking on though. I know God is holding me up and I know that we are a work in progress. I read your blog just at the right time. He keeps doing that, putting things in front of me I need to see and understand. This is a season, I know there will be many more to come and I’m preparing myself for battle against the darkness and praying for good choices. Thank you!

  9. I have two kids – 38 and 31. I wish I would have known this years ago that their choices are not my choices. For too long I have tried to fix some of the choices that were made and I’ve learned that it is not mine to fix. Thankful for new beginnings.

  10. I have 3 kids, ages 15,13 and 11. I so needed to read this today especially when I’m getting regular emails from my 11 yr old’s teacher focusing on all the things he’s not doing well. It’s so discouraging and heartbreaking to hear when your own child is getting into trouble. So far nothing big but mad am I praying! Thanks for the encouragement today!

  11. My kids are 19 & 21 and opposite as the day is long. One has always steered far away from trouble, the other had to try everything…multiple times…heartbreaking? Absolutely! But God is good and He has given me a picture of how HE sees my child through the junk…the purpose He has for this child:) Both raised the same and taught the same values, 2 different choices. My job is NOT to change that heart but to be on my knees:) My job is to come against the enemy for my child…and who better than a mom whose very heart is the heartbeat of her child? Praise God He is faithful to hold that child when I can’t, to command His angels to guide and protect, and to hold my mothers heart as I wait for “joy to come in the morning.” He IS God and He IS good!

  12. My husband and I have 2 daughters, ages 18 and 14. I have always believed that my children’s choices were a reflection of me, so bad choices were a clear reminder of what a poor job I was doing as a mother. A friend and I just had this conversation on Monday and sure could have used today’s devotion. I would love to give her a copy of “Hoodwinked” for encouragement! (And then I would borrow it to read for myself!) Thanks for your wisdom.

  13. Mom of a 3 1/2 year old boy whom we adopted. I love him with all my heart. I struggle as he is making very bad choices and the past 2 days I’ve taken it on as my problem. Your blog blessed and helped me today. Praying I train him up in the Lord and he learns to make better choices as life goes on. Blessings to you and your ministry.

  14. I’m seven months pregnant with our first child, and I’ve been soaking up as much information as I can since I found out I was pregnant. I’m learning to try and let go of the idea of perfection and being okay with the fact that I will make mistakes no matter how hard I try or how much I prepare. My fellowship with God has become much closer as I learn to trust in Him and allow Him to guide me rather than feeling like I have to know it all. Your blog has been a tremendous help, so thank you for that!

  15. I have 2 girls, 16 & 9. They are good girls, but sometimes they can drive me off the wall with their teasing each other or not paying attention when I ask them to do something.

  16. I have 3 children, my oldest son is with the Lord as of age 17 years, a son 23 years and a daughter 21 years. As they become adults, it has been challenging in the choices they make. Thank you for this encouraging devotion. We as mothers must continue to pray for our children, never tire (Galatians 6:9) from it. The Lord is still shaping them.
    As Barbara Johnson (Women of Faith leader) once said, ‘It’s my job to love my kids, and it’s God’s job to touch their lives.’
    I am grateful for the relationship my oldest son had with Jesus and how his life impacted/touched family members, friends, people we didn’t even know and beyond.

    Thank you P31 for your ministries and God bless you all.

  17. Hi! Huge fan of P31 online studies. Loved Keep It Shut. Looking forward to Hoodwinked.

    Mom of 3 (2 girls, ages 15 and 12 and a boy 7) and step-mom to 2 boys 14 and 13. Aunt to two adorable cuties both 3 a boy and a girl. My 12 yr old daughter has many medical challenges, including severe learning delays, incontinence (still in diapers), autism, and Lennox Gasteaut Syndrome (a seizure disorder resistant to medication).

    Between co-parenting, blending our family, medical challenges, and surviving the teen years, being a mom has been tough but rewarding. Can’t wait to read Hoodwinked. All moms can use some encouragement!

  18. Oh My Goodness and Thank you for this post… I can start by saying that this morning, I received a plack for 15 years of service in my ministry earthly job. Then, soon as I got back to my desk on just a high in the Lord. I received a call from my 16 year old son’s school principal. My son’s in the Principals office and in trouble for being late to class 22 times (ISS-In School Suspension)…OMG, school just recently started, how can you be late that many times! I will say no more, then I read your article. Thank God for Grace and Mercy. That’s why I say, God is Good. But truly, God is Good and Worthy of all Praise.

  19. My husband and I have 3 children: 12, 8 and 5. It’s hard to separate their choices from my identity sometimes, but I’m trying!

  20. I have five living children; 18, 17, 13, 12, and 10. Three girls and two boys and a whole mess of hormones. If it weren’t for grace, we wouldn’t get through a day!

  21. I have one child and I’m a single mom. It has been a lot of work balancing between working full-time and raising a child myself, but God has definitely blessed me with the sweetest, caring, most giving little girl.

  22. I have 2 kids. A 2 year old girl and 7 year old boy. I too sometimes feel that little tug on my heart when they get in trouble at school or misbehave in public. Right now, our 2 year old is going through that very “terrific 2’s” phase and she loves to test us. My husband sometimes loses his patience or he will give in. I have to remind him that she is only 2 years old and that other child did the same thing. I almost didn’t want a second child because the 2-3 year stage like to wore me out from my first one but I’m most definitely sure we won’t be having a third one now ;)
