Marriage is hard. So very hard. As in he-drives-me-so-crazy-it-makes-my-head-explode hard.

Can I get an “Amen”?

And sometimes, marriage is even more laden with serious problems than that. Infidelity. Neglect. Abuse.

Hard stuff.

My husband and I have walked through tough marriage situations such as these with many couples. Some sadly ended in divorce, no matter how much one of the spouses didn’t want it to. You see, it takes two people to make a marriage work. Unfortunately, it only takes one to break it up.

Other couples we’ve known have been able to forgive, reconcile, and rebuild their broken marriage, again because both were willing to do so.

In the past year I have had five different friends each come out with a helpful and honest marriage book. Some are just encouraging and helpful and some are for the marriage in trouble. I thought this week was a great time to tell you about all of them! Affiliate links may be included, I only recommend books I love that bring value to my readers.

Rebuilding a Marriage Better Than New by Cindy Beall. Cindy’s marriage took quite a hit when she discovered that not only had her husband been unfaithful, but the woman was pregnant with his child. I heard Cindy speak at an event where we were both keynotes. I cried my fool head off. Not because of the tragic tale but because of the miraculous way God rebuilt her marriage. Seriously. I can’t stop smiling every time I spy a pic of Cindy and her husband and their boys on Instagram. This book is a great tool for healing and hope.

No More Perfect Marriages; Experience the Freedom of Being Real Together by Mark and Jill Savage. The Savages have been friends of ours for over 20 years. We’ve seen them in ministry with spouses and parents and we’ve seen their marriage survive and affair five years ago that sent us to our knees begging God for redemption and reconciliation. After wearing out the knees on my jeans, we saw their marriage restored. In this book they speak honestly about their struggles, how they came back from betrayal, and the principles keeping their marriage strong today.

  1. I would love to win “For Better or For Kids”. This one really speaks to me because it is easy to get caught in the day to day routine of parenting that you forget to take the time to be a spouse.

  2. I’d love to get a copy of the 14 day romance challenge. I love challenges and practical ways to put suggestions into actions! We’ve been married 18 years as high school sweethearts.

  3. The book, “A Fourteen Day Romance Challenge” sounds like one I need to spice up our relationship. After nearly 20 years of marriage, I see small cracks in our relationship that could be the sign of future major breaks. The input from this book would be a great help to heal the small divisions that keep us from being fully invested in our marriage.

  4. Rebuilding A Marriage Better Than New. I can relate to everything the author describes and is going through and while difficult, God can restore anything to a state that’s better than where it was.

  5. A 14-Day Romance Challenge: Reigniting Passion in Your Marriage Would be the perfect book right now. A little extra spark and flamebin the marriage is always welcomed and a blessing!

  6. For Better or for Kid’s. In the midst of raising four young kids. Would love to read ideas on how to keep our marriage and friendship a priority. We have been using the author’s Bible Study, The Dig, as a family and have really enjoyed it.

  7. If I were totally honest, I would love one of each! lol But, I think I would have to say For Better or for Kids because we have a two year old and a two month old. Parenthood didn’t change our marriage in huge ways at first because our firstborn was the easiest baby ever. Our two month old, however, is definitely a more high maintenance baby, so it’s a lot harder now to connect on a day-to-day basis, let alone to have date nights.

  8. I would like to win ‘Love Unending or ‘The 14 day Challenge.’ After 40 years of marriage some of the gloss has dulled a bit. Our first 22 yrs included separations for his military career so we didn’t take each other for granted.

  9. Love unending… marriage in midst of motherhood

Have a toddler and being six weeks away from having our second son, it is very easy to focus my time and energy on our son and resting up for this baby. I want to focus more on my husband because he deserves it.

  10. For Better or for Kids. Because with two boys under the age of 3 it’s a struggle to keep husband first and kids second.

  11. We need A 14-Day Romance Challenge: Reigniting Passion in Your Marriage. We have been married almost,39 yrs and I ask my husband for better communication and how I need more acknowledgement of things I do and how that would help spark my mostly empty passion tank. I’ve given up asking for romantic overtures during the day…

  12. I received your email about marriage today and was thankful to read that some couples have actually recovered after an affair. My marriage has been a roller coaster of emotional violence and that includes lying and hiding things. Porn was once an issue-and tho that’s not a physical affair it still breaks hearts and trust. The things I’ve been through are gut wrenching and our marriage still needs help and is not healed.

If you think of it pray for me to have wisdom as to what to do. Years of problems have caused me to have no trust at all. None- and I don’t see it ever coming back. I’d like to know how the Savage family restored their marriage after an affair bc sometimes trusting doesn’t come easy and when broken it seems beyond repair. I hurt and I doubt, and struggle so much. If it happens that my name is picked I’d like to read the book by the Savages. Thanks for your post-

  13. I would like the 14 day romance challenge – I sure would like some good ideas to step out of the mundane of everyday routines that are easy to get stuck in.

  14. I’d love to win for better or for kids or love unending! With two WILD little boys our lives are very loud. On top of having my husbands parents sister and my dad live with us, there is always something else pulling for our attention! We want an incredible marriage! Also to set an example in our home of what a great marriage looks like!

  15. For Better or For Kids….my husband doesn’t think our marriage is important when there’s kids in the house! :(

  16. hmm either the 14 days of romance or the no more perfect marriages. I just got engaged and today is our two year anniversary of being together and what better way to pre pare and understand and build a relationship then these two books. I feel like they would be great to start with and to read before getting married. There is no perfect marriage and we have already experienced ups and downs and I know God will continue to put us through more as our relationship Grows and blooms. Its amazing to watch someone come closer to God that you love, He has come leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. Also I feel like the Romance one would be great because often times we get caught up in life, and work and forget about our partners. So advice in both areas would be beneficial for anyone. :-)

  17. I would choose Love Unending because we are getting closer to it being just the two of us again and I want to remember what it was like with just the two of us. It kind of scares me since our lives revolve around our daughters and their activities. Thank you this chance Ms. Karen! You are a blessing!

  18. “Love Unending” sounds interesting. I just became a mom so I feel that book would give me good insight and info. My husband and I read “For Better or For Kids.” That was a very good book. Easy to read with lots of practical advice.

  19. I would love the book For Better or For Kids! I would give it to my daughter. She has four joys and the last three pregnancies presented difficulties. The last two were only 1 year apart and thd littlest was born through emergency c-section because the cord was, wrapped around her neck twice. She has developmental physical delays and with that brings extra stress.

  20. I would love the ok For Better or For Kids. I have a beautiful couple friend I would love to bless with this book!
