11th Annual 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (2018) December 4-15 at karenehman.com.

My guest today is my dear friend, blogger, author, and creator of Good Morning Girls,  Courtney Joseph. I am so thrilled she chose to share her clever idea with all of you. Ever since she told me about it a few years back, it has been one of my favorite Christmastime ideas ever! Here’s Courtney…

As a child I loved driving around and looking at Christmas lights with my family.  So when my children were born, we continued this tradition only we added a fun spiritual twist to it. Every Christmas Eve, I prepare the kids for our drive by having them color about 10 coloring pages of the nativity.

After they finish coloring their pictures, I write on their pictures these words:

“Jesus is the reason for the season!

Thank you for displaying your nativity!”

Then we put on our Christmas pajamas, crank up Christmas music, and begin driving around in search of baby Jesus!   I wish I could explain how exciting the anticipation is in the car.  As each beautiful house passes by, we examine it hard in search of an angel, a star, or any sign of a nativity.

Then it happens! A house with a nativity is spotted and the celebration erupts in the car as we clap and cheer at the sight of our Savior Jesus!

Then we pull over and one of the kids (cautiously and safely) hops out of the car and slips a thank you note into their mail box.  Then we continue on in our journey in search of more nativities, until all of our pictures are handed out.

We began this tradition back when my kids were preschoolers and they still love to do this even now as teenagers!  The only change we have made is that they no longer are interested in coloring pictures, so now I buy Christmas cards with a picture of the nativity on it and I have them write out the thank you note inside.

If you are looking for a new and meaningful tradition to try out this year, I can’t recommend this highly enough.  There are so many spiritual analogies you can talk about while you drive in the car – such as how God wants us to seek him and that when we seek him, we will find him, when we seek him with all of our heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) Or how the Wise Men must have felt when they followed the star that led them to baby Jesus.  Or how nothing is as beautiful as the sight of our Savior Jesus and how God delights in the praises of His people.

What is an idea you have done, or have heard about and would like to try, that focuses on the real reason for the season? Let’s celebrate the birth of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!

Keep walking with the King,

Courtney

  1. When my kids were little we lived in a neighborhood that people would drive through to see the decorations so we always tried to have great scenes each year . I loved going to other neighborhoods to see how others decorated.

  2. Such a great gift. My family goes every year and drives around to looks at Christmas lights also. We all enjoy looking at them.

  3. The last couple of years we have gone through Ann Voskamp’s Christmas devotional as a family—it’s wonderful! I might borrow your idea, though, Courtney.

  4. Love my nativity! Have 4 set up and my son likes to play with then and says baby Jesus! ? So he’s learning about it all. Start them young =)

  5. We have a tradition of always displaying our very own nativity but our Christmas tree to remind us of the reason for the season and attending Christmas Eve Church service.

  6. For me it’s the time of the year that I have an increased opportunity to share the truth re God’s love to us, through Jesus, by greetings, cards, notes, conversations etc with a lot of folks that may be tuning in to it when otherwise they might not. I want to make these choices “count” because it may be an opportunity otherwise missed. .

  7. I love this idea! The kids and I really enjoy driving different routes home at this time of year so we can see different Christmas lights. At least three or four times during the season we have to head over to our local park that is decked out as “The Festival of Lights” and the very opening is a giant light set that says “Faith.”

This year we are reading the book of Luke- a chapter a day- so we can remember that the reason for the season is more than Christ came as a baby- but that Christ came to die and rise for us. It’s sparked some really great conversations and melts my heart as I hear my children tell me the Truth and understand so much more than I could have imagined at such young ages.

  8. I have a little who just turned 1, and I have a few Christian story books Iwe were lilliagiven for my baby shower and his 1st birthday. I know he’s little but I try reading one to him every night before bedtime ??

  9. Any activity that brings families together for some quiet moments to really focus on Jesus, what Jesus is about, I love! Families just get too busy strung out from one activity to another, and unlike lights, forget to shine when stretched beyond their capacity. I love this idea. Thank you for sharing! Our Sunday school children put together soup starter bags to give to others, and they loved it. It is a very simple activity families can do together to bless others.

  10. I love reading to my kids the story of Jesus’birth while they set up our nativity scene my husband and his sister made when they where little.

  11. My dad picks out a new Christmas book (with a lesson) every year! We always love gathering together in the evenings and listening to my daddy read. This year have my own little family and I am excited to carry on that tradition!

  12. My kids are grown now, but I wish I had known many years ago, to not give so many gifts, but now I can tell them that when they have children, to focus on a “gold, frankensence and Myrh” gift ~ really meaningful things (big or small) are a good idea, and to not be afraid to share the gospel about Christmas with others
