11th Annual 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (2018) December 4-15 at karenehman.com.

My day five guest is my fellow team member at Proverbs 31 Ministries Denise Hughes, who is an author and also one of our First Five app Bible teachers. Here she is with a scrumptious traditional Christmas recipe. Enjoy!

Long before you could find a boxed cake mix for red velvet cake, my grandma always made a red velvet cake from scratch on Christmas Day. It was her way of celebrating Jesus’ birthday. We call it our Christmas Cake. (But please note, this recipe is not for the super health-conscious! It includes red food dye! You can always purchase natural food dye online or simply leave the dye out and still enjoy the delicious taste!)

RECIPE FOR CHRISTMAS CAKE (Red Velvet Cake)

Mixture #1

Crisco               ½ cup
Sugar                1 ½ cups
Eggs                  2

Mixture #2

Flour                2 ¼ cups
Baking Soda      1 tsp
Salt                  1 tsp

Mixture #3

Cocoa               2 tsp
Red Food Dye   2 oz.

Mixture #4

Buttermilk       1 cup
Vinegar            1 tsp
Vanilla              1 tsp

Using a mixer, alternately combine the four mixtures in a large bowl. Pour the batter into two 9” round baking pans. (Lightly grease and flour the pans first.) Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool and turn out onto cooling racks. Many people serve red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. You can see one of Karen’s favorite homemade recipes to use by clicking here but store bought will also do in a pinch.

What is a traditional Christmas food you or your family enjoys? Please share! Bonus points if you share the recipe. (Not really. We’d just love to see it so we can try it out!)

Enjoy,

Denise

  1. My daughter makes a scrumptious cheese ball. She started this about 2 yrs. ago, & now it is one of her things that she has brought for Thanksgiving & Christmas. People have requested it!

  2. We make hard candy every Christmas to share with friends and family! It’s a long process but it’s a lot of fun and a great way to spend time together!

  3. Our Christmas dinner is pretty traditional, but on Christmas Eve I love my mother’s navy bean soup and biscuits. Yummy!

  4. We like having Christmas brunch with a breakfast casserole, French toast casserole, hash brown potato casserole and fresh fruit bowl. These can all be made up the night before and you just have to pop in the oven.

  5. We like snickerdoodles and my aunt’s Apple cake and sugar cookies. My boys always divide up all my aunt”s cookies equally and they don’t last long. They are delicious!

  6. Our most traditional Christmas Eve dinner is chili with Fritos and all the toppings. Plus our pound cake cookies for dessert. :)

  7. Potato candy! My dad and I made it every year. I haven’t been able.to make with my kids because my daughter has a severe peanut allergy (it has PB) but if she ever outgrows it, we will be making it!

  8. I don’t have one specific favorite, I just love getting the homemade food that my aunt makes. She does most of the cooking since my grandma and other aunt has passed away and of course most of her stuff is made from my Grandma’s recipes. I am not much of a cook at all and only cook enough to make sure my kids are fed, so I love eating her food.

  9. Would love to read this book and see what it’s about. The red velvet cake recipe looks delicious . I ha e tried in store red velvet cakes but didn’t care much for them. Think I will give this one a try.
