Day 6 of 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (with Katy McCown)

Winners announced here! Congratulations!

*Give Away has Ended*

It’s Day 6 of 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways!

If you’re just joining in, catch up with us by starting at Day One here.

11th Annual 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (2018) December 4-15 at karenehman.com.

My guest for today is my friend and Proverbs 31 teammate Katy McCown, wife to NFL quarterback, Luke McCown.

My family and I have moved a lot over the years so finding traditions hasn’t come easy. But several years ago we started getting live Christmas trees, and it’s become one tradition we look forward to every year. The last few years we’ve actually gone to a Christmas tree farm and cut down our own tree. It involves a sled for the tree and a saw (with 6 kids we have to be very strategic about who holds the saw). There’s also a petting zoo at the farm and for the last 2 years some of my children have tried to convince me we need a baby pig. I’ve remained a very solid “no” on the matter. We’ve dodged ant beds and stepped in mud puddles, but even with all of the chaos it’s been a fun family tradition that I hope we can do for many years to come!

  1. We started cutting down our own Christmas ? last year. We go with a group of friends and make it a day. We live in NV and drive to Utah. The trees aren’t perfect but it reminds me that none of us are perfect but Jesus is!

  2. We Love Real trees, we have done it for years, we Love the smell of it, now it takes some work watering it but it is worth it!!!

  3. I have never gotten a real tree but would love to start that tradition when my husband and I move into our first house! We’re currently in a small apartment, so I think I’ll save that to look forward to in our new home. :)

  4. We love getting a live tree (although we don’t cut it ourselves) but we do get it from the same grower ever year for the past 4-5 years.

  5. When our children were young we would go to a tree farm also. One of my favorite memories is of my son carrying his play chain saw and “Helping Daddy cut the tree down” .

  6. One of our kiddos can’t handle a live tree due to allergies but years ago we always went Christmas Eve to my granny’s and went in the woods at her house to cut the tree. I miss those simple days of Christmas.

  7. One of our kiddos can handle a live tree due to allergies but years ago we always went Christmas Eve to my granny’s and went in the woods at her house to cut the tree. I miss those simple days of Christmas.

  8. We had a comical event with a live tree quite a few years ago. I’ve had a fake one since. Maybe we’ll try live next year. ?

  9. Sounds like you’ve kept things fun in spite of moving. Having recently moved (first time) I understand how disruptive it can be. And yes it’s hard to keep some traditions when you are new to an area.

  10. I would venture to guess that not many people have experienced what turns out to be my fondest “live Christmas tree” memory.
It was the last day of school before Christmas vacation when my 2nd-grade teacher asked the class, “Who does not yet have a Christmas tree?” It was I and one or two classmates who didn’t have a tree yet. The teacher put our names in a cup …and my name was drawn as the winner! Can’t you just imagine the thrill I had dragging that tree behind me for the two-block walk home!!
My husband and I inherited his parents’ artificial aluminum tree with the rotating light wheel. We decided to put it up one year when our twins were in high school. Their friends had never even heard of, let alone seen such a sight.
Traditions are so very important for forming sweet memories that we cherish down the road. These include caroling, going for a drive to see the lights, preparing special delicacies to feast upon.
The most treasured tradition is the family reading of the Christmas story from the Bible.

P.S. Nobody has mentioned the time-honored tradition of watching the movie “Christmas Story” with Ralphie!!!

  11. Beautiful bracelet and a great t shirt!
My kids are growing older, but we still gather for dinner every night. I’ll miss that especially next year when my oldest is away at college. For now, appreciate the laughs and cries together as a family.

  12. You will have to share how you get time by yourself with 6 kids! I’ve always loved real trees but haven’t had one in my own home. I kill every plant I get so I know a tree would be no different. ?

  13. The past two years, with our oldest two growing up, we’ve stopped getting all of us together to get our tree, and/or decorate together.
I’m still enjoying it with the younger kids, but I’m going to have to come up with a ‘new’ tradition, that gets us all together.

  14. We usually had fake trees growing up and I always told myself I was gonna have real trees. I love the smell from real trees but I’m not a fan of the clean up or the possibilities of critters hitchhiking their way into my house.

  15. I would love to try a real tree one year I love the smell but I don’t think my allergies would, what a nice tradition I wish I would have done that when my son was younger our tradition is to go look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve

  16. We had a real tree when I was growing up. One year it was infested with fire ants and another there was a bird in it. I remember how dry it would get and how bad it hurt to hang up the ornaments. We have a fake now!

  17. I love that you have a real tree. My family and I have had an artificial one simply because we travel for the holidays and I am doing it for a safety measure. However, I have one Christmas that we had a real tree…the year my daughter Natalie was born. You see she was born on December 24th and I could not travel that year so as I got one of my most favorite gifts I also was able to enjoy the beauty and scent of a real tree (as well as the needles everywhere :) ). Thank you for sharing…may you be blessed to be a blessing!
