Now, this year for day one, we are kicking off the festivities with the queen of Christmas herself, Candace Cameron Bure. I mean, it just isn’t Christmas without one of her Hallmark Christmas movies, right? To get our series started this year, Candace is gifting one of you with something special from her Dayspring Simply Christmas collection.

But first, here is the idea of the day!

Day 1: The 3 Gift Tradition

When Todd and I became parents over 25 years ago we began the tradition of giving our kids just three gifts for Christmas. Yep…. that is not a typo. I said three. That is all baby Jesus received—remember gold, frankincense and myrrh? In fact, each of them received a gold gift, a frankincense present, and a myrrh package. Here is the concept:

GOLD GIFT

This, like gold, is a highly desired item; precious; maybe even pricey. A big ticket item like a toy, an electronic gadget, tickets to a professional sporting event, or a fancy coffee maker for our adult daughter.

FRANKINCENSE GIFT

Because the real frankincense was burned during prayer and arose heavenward, the gift in this category is something that will draw them closer to God. Perhaps a new Bible, a book series, a leather journal and fancy pen, or tickets to an event or concert.

MYRRH GIFT

This is a burial spice used to cover the whole body. So the myrrh gift does the same thing. It goes on the body. In past years this has been leather boots and a new coat for our daughter, a warm thermal  jumpsuit and camo boots for our son who loves to hunt and eat venison, or maybe a favorite professional sports team jersey or pair of tennis shoes a child really wanted.

Since our kids knew the number of items was limited, they didn’t expect oodles of gifts—just three. And we also included them when we shopped for a less-fortunate family we adopted each year.  We also took them along when we delivered the gifts to the family. It was good for them to see that we used some of the money we would have spent on more gifts for them to purchase for a family who might not be able to afford any gifts.

The three gift tradition. Try it out this year!

And now, here’s Candace’s fabulous giveaway!

  1. I buy 2 ornaments just alike, 1 goes on my tree, 1 goes in a box I have for my daughter, when she gets married, it will be a start to her and her husbands 1st Christmas tree. We love doing this together, pulling them out every yr, looking at the dates on the back, and remembering, where we made or why we bought this particular ornament.

  2. It’s not a gift so much as a tradition but my husband and I do not have children of our own, so every year we have my niece and nephew over on the 23rd. We bake cookies for Santa and stay up late watching Christmas movies together. We call it the eve of Christmas Eve and it’s one of our favorite nights of the year!

  3. I love gifting pajamas to my daughter to open Christmas Eve. She looks forward to it every year and the surprise design they have.

  4. Every year I get my dad red licorice and malted milk balls. It was all I could afford as a kid but he would make such a big deal out of it. You would have thought I bought him a new set of power tools. Now, I just love the tradition and I think he does too.

  5. My traditional gift is one I recieve Each year is an almanac from my uncle. He has been giving one to all ” the kids” for 20+ years. We look forward to it so much. I am now a mom and know some day I’ll be giving all “the kids” almanacs.

  6. My boyfriends family has a tradition of buying his mother a new Christmas ornament that reminds her of each of them. I think it’s a precious way to see how they reflect on themselves and remind his mother of each individual kid.

  7. I alway got my PJ’s and slippers and 1 special gift from Santa. Now that they are older and on there own. I give them each a super large gift bag full of all kinds of little things that they can use throughout the year.

  8. One year I made ornaments out of these cute little trophies we had won on a cruise that summer. It was a great way to remember the cruise.

  9. Each year we give our children German lebkuchen aka gingerbread. We also bake cookies from my Oma’s recipe book. I grew up in Germany so it’s in some small way passing on a Christmas tradition from my own childhood. ?

  10. I like to get my husband a new ornament for our tree each year. It could be a character from a movie, cartoon, comic book or just something that I think he would like.

  11. We do four gifts for our children. Something they can wear, share, want, and need. This way we are intentional with what we give and they still remember the reason of the season.

  12. My dad collects Santas and my mom collects Precious Moments figurines, so I get them one for Christmas each year!

  13. We do stockings the same way every year you get a giant peppermint stick at Tootsie roll Bank lifesaver storybook and some Hershey’s kisses but you also get little trinkets that are special to you for each person.

  14. I give the teachers and staff that I work with a gift of the nut cups that I bake. I put a dozen in holiday containers along with the recipe. They all love it. The gift hardly makes it home for them to share with their loved ones because they eat them all up. The nut cups are baked in mini muffin tins and are eaten in one bite. They just live them??
