Now, this year for day one, we are kicking off the festivities with the queen of Christmas herself, Candace Cameron Bure. I mean, it just isn’t Christmas without one of her Hallmark Christmas movies, right? To get our series started this year, Candace is gifting one of you with something special from her Dayspring Simply Christmas collection.

But first, here is the idea of the day!

Day 1: The 3 Gift Tradition

When Todd and I became parents over 25 years ago we began the tradition of giving our kids just three gifts for Christmas. Yep…. that is not a typo. I said three. That is all baby Jesus received—remember gold, frankincense and myrrh? In fact, each of them received a gold gift, a frankincense present, and a myrrh package. Here is the concept:

GOLD GIFT

This, like gold, is a highly desired item; precious; maybe even pricey. A big ticket item like a toy, an electronic gadget, tickets to a professional sporting event, or a fancy coffee maker for our adult daughter.

FRANKINCENSE GIFT

Because the real frankincense was burned during prayer and arose heavenward, the gift in this category is something that will draw them closer to God. Perhaps a new Bible, a book series, a leather journal and fancy pen, or tickets to an event or concert.

MYRRH GIFT

This is a burial spice used to cover the whole body. So the myrrh gift does the same thing. It goes on the body. In past years this has been leather boots and a new coat for our daughter, a warm thermal  jumpsuit and camo boots for our son who loves to hunt and eat venison, or maybe a favorite professional sports team jersey or pair of tennis shoes a child really wanted.

Since our kids knew the number of items was limited, they didn’t expect oodles of gifts—just three. And we also included them when we shopped for a less-fortunate family we adopted each year.  We also took them along when we delivered the gifts to the family. It was good for them to see that we used some of the money we would have spent on more gifts for them to purchase for a family who might not be able to afford any gifts.

The three gift tradition. Try it out this year!

And now, here’s Candace’s fabulous giveaway!

  1. We’ve been gifting experiences the last few years! We have enough “stuff”. There’s no need to buy more just to put something under the tree so instead we focus on making memories

  2. Every year except for maybe the year I had my youngest son who was born 3 days before christmas. We make sugar cookies all together for our neighbors and family. Write on christmas cards stick candy canes on the plates and deliver them to our friends and family a couple days before christmas!!

  3. I try to find or craft an ornament that represents something the did that year. For example, my daughter performed in Romeo & Juliet so I made her an ornament to remember her time with that show.

  4. I guess two presents come to mind. My husband has given me a children’s book each year and inscribes it to me . Upon the arrival of grandchildren I will have a whole collection for them. I love to give photo gifts. So throughout the year I take pictures of friends and family. If possible, at Christmas I make a t-shirt, ornament, tie, key-chain, or just print it and add a frame. Picture gifts have always been appreciated. I will write letters this Christmas thanking people for their investment in my life.

  5. Christmas morning, no presents are touched, we all awake, eat cinnamon rolls, coffee (for me).
There is one giant box that sits in front of the tree, with a smaller box on top. We open these as a family, the smaller first, it has a book on top, it tells the story of the birth of baby Jesus, as we read it we take out each piece, one by one telling each person or animals job, and after the manger has been assembled, the bigger box is opened, with a Happy Birthday balloon for baby Jesus, and we ler it go into the sky as we sing Happy Birthday Jesus

  6. I love making a batch of my blue vodka and putting it in pretty bottles with blue or purple ribbon. I make it using Azul tea which turns the vodka blue. It’s super easy to keep on hand for those last minute gifts.

  7. We always celebrate St Nicholas Day on December 6th. Shoes get filled with gold foil wrapped chocolate candy coins, and small gifts. The toes are always topped with a sprig of evergeeen or holly. If you look outside you can see footprints in the snow leading to the trees where St Nicholas snipped off a branch!

  8. I always get my friends a gift card to a restaurant and a free night of babysitting. I also remind them that they are rocking parenthood.

  9. We don’t do a lot of gift giving at Christmas, we prefer to gift each other and others through out the year when we see something the other would like, we are not guaranteed tomorrow so what better day to give a gift then today, this day, when it is least expected.
I love your three gift tradition!

  10. Growing up we always got matching pjs that was the one gift we opened on Christmas Eve. I have kept that tradition with my own family. We are going on 20yrs with this tradition in my home now. I add something special in each to add our own updated version to this tradition and I put either a book or hot coco or sometimes a movie in each box with the pjs. ??

  11. I get my mom a Lenox ornament every year for Christmas and each year we put it up on the tree. My moms Hope is that by the time we leave the house her tree will be full of Lenox ornaments.
