Now, this year for day one, we are kicking off the festivities with the queen of Christmas herself, Candace Cameron Bure. I mean, it just isn’t Christmas without one of her Hallmark Christmas movies, right? To get our series started this year, Candace is gifting one of you with something special from her Dayspring Simply Christmas collection.

But first, here is the idea of the day!

Day 1: The 3 Gift Tradition

When Todd and I became parents over 25 years ago we began the tradition of giving our kids just three gifts for Christmas. Yep…. that is not a typo. I said three. That is all baby Jesus received—remember gold, frankincense and myrrh? In fact, each of them received a gold gift, a frankincense present, and a myrrh package. Here is the concept:

GOLD GIFT

This, like gold, is a highly desired item; precious; maybe even pricey. A big ticket item like a toy, an electronic gadget, tickets to a professional sporting event, or a fancy coffee maker for our adult daughter.

FRANKINCENSE GIFT

Because the real frankincense was burned during prayer and arose heavenward, the gift in this category is something that will draw them closer to God. Perhaps a new Bible, a book series, a leather journal and fancy pen, or tickets to an event or concert.

MYRRH GIFT

This is a burial spice used to cover the whole body. So the myrrh gift does the same thing. It goes on the body. In past years this has been leather boots and a new coat for our daughter, a warm thermal  jumpsuit and camo boots for our son who loves to hunt and eat venison, or maybe a favorite professional sports team jersey or pair of tennis shoes a child really wanted.

Since our kids knew the number of items was limited, they didn’t expect oodles of gifts—just three. And we also included them when we shopped for a less-fortunate family we adopted each year.  We also took them along when we delivered the gifts to the family. It was good for them to see that we used some of the money we would have spent on more gifts for them to purchase for a family who might not be able to afford any gifts.

The three gift tradition. Try it out this year!

And now, here’s Candace’s fabulous giveaway!

  1. It is traditional in our house that each person receives a new HOTWHEELS car (including the adults)! What’s fun about that is we are then given the task of finding someone who can really use that car! The next Christmas we get together, stories are shared all around about who we gave our car to !

  2. I like to get my son new Christmas PJs each year. Last year I even sewed myself, husband and son matching pj bottoms!

  3. Our son is 36 years old and married. He and our daughter-in-love blessed us with our first grandchild. We still give Legos to our son every year. We also have a small tree in another room and always “hide” a secret present under the small tree. During the day, we pretend to find the hidden present. :-)

  4. I haven’t done it in a while (until this year), but my parents always bought a book or two for our Christmas, so I continued that with my son. This year I am buying books for my grandkids.

  5. Growing up and still to this day on Christmas Eve, we receive a new set of Jammies to have on Christmas morning. A new tradition my family started a few years ago, on thanksgiving we draw names. The name we draw, we have to make them a homemade gift. My favorite homemade gift I received was a jewelry hanger my dad made me. He made it out of wood from our old barn that fell down.

  6. I don’t have a traditional gift but personally, I love getting gifts that include pictures of me and my friends! So this year I got them each a photo album filled with pictures of us!

  7. I always let my boys open their new pajamas on Christmas Eve. This year I will probably add a game to play as a family before bed. ???

  8. In addition to their personal presents, we give each of our children a family game to open on Christmas morning. Then we spend time Christmas afternoon and over the break playing them together We aspire to have a game night every weekend, and we love playing old and new games and building memories in the process.

  9. My husband and I always buy our girls an ornament each year. We put their name and year on the box. Then each Christmas they get to open their ornament and hang it on the tree. When they are grown and have their own trees they will have these ornaments to cherish from their childhood.

  10. I don’t have any traditional gifts that I give. I have just noticed that the things my kids like as they get older is cash to have to put toward their expenses.

  11. We pick a charity and donate money in honor of our grandchildren. Some of them have been: shoes to grow, save the turtles, save the mantetees, and save the elephants.

  12. Gifts I give to my child: pajamas, books, DVDs, legos. Gifts to friends: mascara (friends always need), candle, fragranced lotion…

  13. We don’t do special gifts but we do do allow the opening of one present after reading the Luke Story and drinking sparkling cider. We have done this over 40 years now.

  14. We do every year a little different according to what God puts on our hearts and honestly circumstances determine what will be given. We have 8 beautiful blessings but there have been several years where my husband has just been out of work & we have had pretty meager Christmases in terms of gifts. So maybe I will just say that our traditional gift is always LOVE & the gift of the Gospel!
