Day 2: Fun Traditions

For day two of our giveaways, my friend Amber Smith is joining us. Amber is a believer, wife, mom, Texas girl, and actor. She is also the wife of country music star Granger Smith. (You may also know him by his alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr.) Besides all this, Amber is one of the most encouraging friends ever and someone who inspires me to embrace even the hard times in life, knowing God has not abandoned you. (You can click here to see why.)

Here she is to share a memory of the holidays from her childhood. Welcome Amber!

My favorite family tradition since I was a little girl was doing English Christmas crackers. These aren’t the kind of crackers you eat.  They are even better!

A Christmas Cracker is a brightly colored paper tube, twisted at both ends. There is a “banger” inside, when pulled by two people will create a loud snapping “crack” or “bang” sound.

When you pop them, inside you will find a little hat. Everyone puts them on. There are also small trinkets inside, and some jokes. We all go around the table and share our jokes and then take a photo in our paper hats. It is such a fun family tradition.

Now, for today’s quick question. Do you have a favorite tradition you do every year? What is it? Leave your answer in the comments and you will be entered to win my giveaway which is listed below.

Day 2 Giveaway

Thanks Amber! Now, for today’s prize, Amber is giving away an Arise with Amber coffee mug and blue hoodie, a Yee Apparel hat and shirt, a Joy to the World sign, a signed Granger Smith CD, and a $50 gift card to Amazon!

  1. My 3 children are grown but we still enjoy that time with favorites that I make for breakfast and opening gifts on Christmas morning. Sausage bread and a bacon and potato frittata, (Virgin) Sangria and lots of strong coffee with some simmering potpourri on the stove and sharing that time together is my favorite thing. I make an easy meal for dinner and invite any other relatives over that can make it & we play easy games even the little ones can play (like ring toss on antlers or bowling the styrofoam snowman down). When my sister visits, since Christmas Day is her birthday as well as Jesus’ birthday, I make sure to have a birthday cake for her.

  2. My favorite Christmas memory is every Christmas morning gathering at my grandparents for a big southern breakfast with all the aunts, uncles and cousins.

  3. My sisters and I always get the kids together and bake all of the cookies about a week before. Then on Christmas Day, we all meet at our Mother’s house to exchange gifts, have dinner, and celebrate together.

  4. So many favorite traditions! Here’s one I started a few years ago, I wrap each family members’ gifts in their own wrapping paper. My husband’s are always wrapped in Peanuts paper because he loved a Charlie Brown Christmas.

  5. My kids make or pick out a Christmas ornament every year (sometimes both) that I plans to send on with them when they move out into their own home.

  6. Every year, we make treats for family–candied pecans, homemade marshmallows, and cookies. We watch Muppet Christmas Carol on Christmas Day after presents and before Christmas dinner. Mostly, we always spend the day together–playing games and enjoying time with each other.

  7. We make lots of cookies. Different ones but Always Pecan sandies rolled in powdered sugar. Absolutely the best cookie ever.

  8. My favorite traditions would have to be carrying on the tradition of teaching my children how to bake cookies, and having fun with them while doing so. We make traditional Dutch cookies and pastries to celebrate our heritage. As well as since my husband and I have gotten together we go out and pick and cut down our Christmas tree. Now we go out as a family with our two boys.

  9. My husband takes a day off from work so that we can spend it as a family. We call it Christmas Family Date Day, and we’ve been doing it since the kids were both babies. We start out by doing some sort of mission project – making cards for nursing home residents and then passing them out, distributing candy canes, going to a store parking lot and helping people with their carts, etc., just simple things – and then we do something special together, away from all the work and ‘have-to’s’ of the season. This year we went hiking and then visited an outdoor gingerbread house competition in a nearby town. We have dinner out and then drive around and look at lights on the way home. It’s one of my favorite parts of the season now.

  10. We always bake Christmas goodies with my mother. It started when I was young, progressed to my kids and now the grandkids are old enough to draw a recipe out and make it on their own!

  11. My mother always made breakfast on Christmas morning for all who stayed overnight. We had grandparents, aunts and uncles. After breakfast was cleaned up gifts were exchanged. And dinner was started. A lot have gone but my mom continued until she was 78 and we lost her. My sister has took over but it’s just us 3 kids and spouses. Our kids are grown and moved away.

  12. With my kids, it is the Gingerbread house competition. The 4 kids are on 2 teams and they work together to create the best gingerbread house. It almost never stands and is dripping in frosting. But the fun that they have in creating it brings me such joy!

  13. We make Sugar cookies from my great grandma’s recipe every year and then decorate then with icing and sprinkles. We usually go around and deliver a few to neighbors, but probably not this year. And my kids each decorate a special one for Santa.

  14. We always bake up loads of yummy Christmas cookies and deliver to people who serve our community (police, fire, trash, mailperson, military, etc). It’s a time to give back and say thank you!

  15. My family growing up wasn’t big on traditions. But now with my little one, I have started 2 that I love: 1. reading through a chapter of Luke every day in December and then opening up the advent calendar after the reading 2. The Giving Manger – it is so fun to come up with things to do anonymously with my son to love on people around us.

  16. We live in Michigan so going to the worlds largest Christmas store, Bronners, is always a treat! They literally have anything you can imagine for Christmas and then you can enjoy some chicken and noodles for dinner at Zehnders! It’s a must every year!

  17. My husband reads the Christmas story from the Bible as we all sit around the tree in our pjs before we open any presents!

  18. Absolutely! My favorite tradition is getting with my family on Christmas Eve. We play games, make cookies, sing, watch movies, laugh, and more! I just eat it up every year.

  19. My husband reads the Christmas story from Luke 2 and everyone chimes in on the parts they know. Most years I also make Norwegian kringlas.
