Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

This is a super easy dessert to make when you have company. A layer of delicious, ooey-gooey warm fudge settles to the bottom as it bakes. To serve, cut into squares and flip them upside down onto dessert plates. Top with vanilla bean ice cream.

Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

Super easy and delicious, this gooey cake is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, divided
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (can use almond, orange, or mint too–Yum!)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 ¾ cup boiling water
  • Vanilla (or other favorite) ice cream for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • In an 8- or 9-inch ungreased square pan, combine the flour, sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add milk, oil, and vanilla, blending until smooth. Stir in walnuts.
  • In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and ¼ cup cocoa and sprinkle over the top.
  • Pour boiling water over the entire pan and do NOT stir.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes until lightly set.
  • Cut into squares and flip them upside down onto dessert plates. Serve warm, topped with ice cream.
