Cranberry Orange Scones

Trust me—these scones are as good as the ones at the fancy bakery. These cranberry orange scones are the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with the bright flavor of fresh cranberries and a burst of citrus zest drizzle. Flaky and golden on the outside, soft and tender on the inside, they make for an irresistible breakfast treat or afternoon snack.

Cranberry Orange Scones

If fresh cranberries aren’t in season, you may use dried ones instead. You can also substitute fresh blueberries for the cranberries to add a different twist.

Ingredients

Scones

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons half-and-half, plus more for brushing on top
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries

Orange Glaze

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper (or spray with baking spray).
  • In a large bowl, mix sugar, orange zest, flour, baking powder and salt until well combined. Using a pastry cutter, cut in the cold butter until the dough resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk egg, sour cream, half-and-half, orange juice, and almond extract together.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the cranberries.
  • Turn dough out onto a floured counter and pat into a circle about 1-inch thick. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into eight triangles. Place the scones on the baking sheet, spacing them two inches apart. Brush the tops with half-and-half.
  • Bake for 15-17 minutes, until lightly golden. Let cool slightly while making the glaze.
  • To make the glaze, blend the melted butter, almond extract, and orange juice in a small bowl. Whisk in powdered sugar until it reaches a pouring consistency.
Drizzle the glaze over the cooling scones and enjoy!
