What’s in My Book Basket {Fall 2025}

I haven’t been able to read nearly as much as I would like to due to my recent injuries and illnesses—and also because the manuscript for my next book is due next week and I’m trying to finish it up by typing with my one good hand. (Prayers appreciated!) However, here are some books that are in my book basket that I’ve already read or that are waiting for me to finish up when I am on the mend. Grab one at one of the links below and head out to a sunny autumn spot to read and learn. Happy fall!

NOTE: Know that in featuring these books here, I am not saying that I endorse everything written within them, nor all the theological or political views of the authors. I just think they are books that are worth reading, either because they are helpful, entertaining, or thought-provoking.

Breath as Prayer by Jennifer Tucker

I was given this book by my Lifeway family when I recently sustained a slip-and-fall accident in Barcelona. Their care package was creative (a protective cover for my sling when I’m in the shower and a long tool to scratch inside my sling when I can’t reach the itch! So clever!) and this was the highlight—a practical and intriguing book on prayer. Who couldn’t use more encouragement to make talking to God a priority?

The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions by Arthur Bennett

This little book was given to me by a conference attendee once when I was in charge of their speaker evaluation group. It is a book of Puritan prayers that were written much like the King James version of the Bible, with Old English, poetic language. I love reading them slowly, savoring each one, and I’m always challenged by each entry.

Rest & War by Ben Stuart

Yes, you’re seeing that right, this book was in my Summer 2025 book basket, and it’s still in my fall book basket because I wasn’t able to finish it due to my accident. I’m always looking for new books that talk about ancient spiritual practices still be relevant to us in our current culture. This book is such a fabulous example that it’s worth mentioning twice. The author is new to me, but so far I’m enjoying his insights into practices that will help us in our walk with Christ today.

Deserts by Kat Armstrong

I’m always so thrilled when my friend Kat Armstrong releases a new Bible study, and this one is SO good! If you’re in a dry season in life and feel like you’re living in a desert, the refreshment on its pages will be just what you are looking for. In the Deserts Bible study, you will explore:

The Deserts of Ministry, Matthew 14,15: where Jesus feeds the multitudes

The Desert of Shur & Beersheba, Genesis 16,21: where Hagar names God

The Desert of Dothan, Genesis 37,50: where Joseph gets thrown in a pit

The Desert of Sinai, Numbers 11, 14: where the Israelites wander in the wildernes,

The Desert of Judea, Matthew 4: where Jesus is tested

 Did you know that my nickname is Kit? Kat was the keynote speaker at my home church's women’s conference not too long ago, and we snapped this picture. It's a picture of a Kit-Kat. Get it?)

The Bedtime Family Devotional by Ruth and Patrick Schwenk

This book is by one of my best friends and her late husband, Ruth and Pat Schwenk. A delightful devotional you’ll love reading to your children or grandchildren. Make it part of your bedtime routine. It isn’t just a fun nighttime ritual, you will be training your children to seek biblical wisdom each day. To buy, click here: The Bedtime Family Devotional by Ruth and Patrick Schwenk

This picture of my husband, Todd, and me with Pat and Ruth Schwenk was taken at their daughter Bella’s high school graduation back in 2022. My husband is the handsome bald guy. Well, I should say the handsome bald guy without glasses. The other handsome bald guy with glasses is Pat. He changed his address to heaven in January 2024. And Bella is in the middle. I know she could be the one in the front right, but that’s her mother, my bestie, Ruth, who looks like she’s still a teenager! I am the one who does not look like a teenager, but is totally rocking the pink bandanna headband.
