Haven’t we all silently judged someone for doing Haven’t we all silently judged someone for doing things differently from us? Maybe it has been other parents, but it could also be the way others steward their finances or how people commit their time. We think our way is the way. To see someone do it differently makes us quickly climb up our spiritual high horse. Why do we do this? This is not the way of Jesus, friend. Look for ways to connect with those different from you in an intentional way. You might be surprised how much you can learn from them.

Often, when on his way to do something that might Often, when on his way to do something that might seem significant and “big”—like heal someone or perform a miracle—Jesus stopped and gave his attention to a seemingly insignificant individual. He didn’t draw attention to himself by doing big things. Instead, often the right thing for him to do was to pay attention to the hurting soul he saw along the way.

When I begin a message at an event, I start off wi When I begin a message at an event, I start off with a slide of my family, telling a little bit about each person. Our oldest lives with her husband in Charlotte, 12 hours away. Our youngest just moved to Denver, a 17 hour drive. But our middle child, his wife, and baby Jasper live 18 minutes from us, just 3 houses down from the house that son was born in.

At least, they used to.

Today, they move 10 hours south to Tennessee. This all happened very suddenly, but with lots of confirmation that God is in this move.

It is bittersweet for them. The house they leave first belonged to a retired schoolteacher who was like a grandma to our kids. They ate her cookies and learned to swim in her pool. Five years ago when she died, our son bought her house. He soon brought his bride there and three years later our first grandchild was born there at home. The house saw much ministry. They had friends over, showed love to their neighbors, (especially a sweet elderly gentleman across the road), and hosted a Bible study they called “coffee on the corner.”

But we know God has great plans ahead for them. And I am calming my heart by reminding myself that God knows all. He is already there waiting for them. And he will still be here with my husband and me, showing us what to do next now that all four parents on both our sides have died in the last three years and none of our children are in Michigan anymore.

Friends I’ve told about the news all responded: “What confident and independent children you’ve raised!” (Kinda rethinking that parenting tactic right now.)

So, Tennessee folks, tell me what you love about your state. I’ll be visiting there from time to time. Long-distance grandparents, I need all your tips. Everyone else, please pray for this family, and (not gonna lie) for my grieving heart. I may be taking it harder than most because my daughter-in-law isn’t just my daughter-in-law. She is one of my closest friends.

Oh, and besides prayers, if you want to send tissues, coffee, and dark chocolate, I wouldn’t mind that either.

“See, I am sending an angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you.” Exodus 23:20
Here’s to those who are the includers. The ones Here’s to those who are the includers. The ones who root for the underdog. The ones who see someone left out, lonely, or feeling less-than, and want to do something to raise their spirits.

Our daughter has always been one such person. The one who made friends with the shy children who were jumping in the balls alongside of her at the fast food restaurant. The one who befriended the new girl at youth group whom the other church moms thought she shouldn’t hang around because they weren’t from a “good family.” The girl who felt so bad whenever she discovered someone was sick or sad. The middle schooler who one day packed up some of her favorite, trendy items of clothing and jewelry to give to a new girl at church who had just moved to our town because she had been placed in foster care.

Such others-centered people soon grow up—but don’t grow out of their giving ways. Who knows—one day they may even be awarded runner-up status for Woman of the Year after spending 10 weeks putting on 47 events, involving 110 local businesses, in an all-out effort to raise a bunch of money to help the @llsnorthcarolina fight blood cancer.

The amount of money? No small chunk of change, just $553,478!

But perhaps my favorite part of this whole journey was seeing the support of her friends and husband—the very people who are answers to this mama‘s prayers. Many, many years ago, I asked God to bring her a strong, steady man who loved God more than her and some loyal and loving friends who would support her in life. He heard my prayers Each time I’m around any of these wonderful humans, my heart bursts with gratitude to God.

Oh, and one other thing. Parents of strong willed, stubborn, and determined little people: keep telling yourself what you are seeing is immature leadership. Give them time to grow into their big personality. One day that little spitfire of yours will grow up and make the world a better place.
