➡️ TO ENTER TO WIN: Like this post and tag a friend who you would like to share coffee or tea with. ☕️ OR… you can share your favorite way to show kindness to others or tag a friend who is great at being thoughtful. 👩🏻👩🏾‍🦱👱🏻‍♀️🧑🏽👩🏼‍🦰

Happy birthday to our Mackenzie Leith Ehman 🎂💕🎉 (aka Kenna, Half-pint, Kenna-Bob, Kenzie-doodle, and Kenz)

It’s been a few decades since your scary and shaky entrance into the world. 😬I hope your celebration today is even better than the birthday party you insisted on having when you turned six, which is pictured. You wanted an angel party and on the menu you asked for heavenly hash, both angel food AND devil’s food cake and Grandma Margaret’s deviled eggs. And of course, we all pitched in and made it happen. 🎂

And now, you are the “make it happen” one. Always cheering others on. Always making opportunities for people. Building a business and your sweet family. (See, I told you that best friend of yours would make an excellent husband, just like your dad!)

You are fierce. Kind. Innovative. Opinionated. Industrious. Generous. And strongly stubborn. And I wouldn’t change a thing about you. 💕

Oh, and for fun I tucked in a picture of you with your great grandma Lucille Leith Rankin Ehman, after whom you were named and from whose family line I suspect you may have gotten a lot of your spunk from. (Related to Jeanette Rankin, first woman to hold federal office in the United States. She was a Republican from Montana who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1916.) Great grandma Ehman was almost 86 when you were born and almost 96 when she took her last breath. May you live even longer.🌸

Since we can’t be there, I’ll have Naomi and Ethan give you hugs and kisses from us. 💕 Here’s hoping today is as fabulous as you are. 😉

Visited my mother’s grave today to place some da Visited my mother’s grave today to place some daisies on it, one of her favorite flowers. 🌼 It appears some squirrels have been having a picnic on her bench. They left behind some cracked-open walnut shells with all the nut meats missing. My mom loved to feed the squirrels so I’m sure it would have made her smile. 🐿🐾
This was one of the last pictures I snapped when m This was one of the last pictures I snapped when my mother was alive. I took it one afternoon as we finished up lunch at a local diner.

My mom loved coffee. And she especially loved it when served in a brown stoneware vintage mug, just like the one in this picture. It was the same type of mug we had in our house growing up. The same kind my father had in his restaurant when I was in high school and college.

I inherited one mug that had been my father‘s when he passed away. My mom liked to use it when she came to my house because she loved the feel of it in her hand. Then, when she passed away, I inherited one she still had in her cupboard, so now I have a matching pair.

Grief is an uninvited guest who shows up whenever they want. The days I think I will grieve the most— like Mother’s Day, or my mom’s birthday— I usually don’t. Instead, it’s those random weekday afternoons when I go to grab a mug from the mismatched collection in my cupboard, and out comes one of those brown diner mugs. It is then that the grief slaps my soul, reminding me I can’t share a cup of coffee with her ever again.

This weekend is Mother’s Day. There will be brunches and homemade cards from children; backyard cookouts where moms will open bottles of perfume or pedicure certificates. But for others, your heart will be split open with grief.

Perhaps it is because you are missing your own mother. Or maybe it’s because you desperately want to be a mother but aren’t. For others it will be because you have lost a child or spouse.

Whatever the case, if Mother’s Day is hard for you this year, will you leave a comment so I can whisper a prayer for you? And be encouraged with this thought: God sees you. He loves you. Jesus understands suffering and grief. Let grief do the work of making you more compassionate toward others; more grateful for your blessings. Suffering stings, but it can also help us grow.

“…we glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Romans 5:3-5
