I don’t think Christmas would be complete without an annual turkey stuffing recipe, do you? This is a recipe that was passed down from my grandma to my mom and now to my sisters and their children.

Ask my husband what his favorite Christmas dish is–hands down he’ll say it’s my turkey stuffing. It’s a family favorite and a must-have at every Christmas and thanksgiving dinner!

I hope you enjoy it!

Mom’s Turkey Stuffing

Ingredients:

1 lb. Pork sausage

Breadcrumbs from one loaf of bread (cube and toast in the oven)

1 Onion (diced)

1 pinch of ginger

1 T sage

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 diced Celery stalk

1 c turkey broth or water

*Don’t tell my mom, but I also add a box of chicken flavored Stove Top Stuffing to the mix, just to give it that extra kick of flavor. But it tastes amazing either way!

turkey dinner vegetable detailProcedure:

To make bread crumbs, cube a loaf of bread and toast them on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. Check them often so they don’t over toast.

Mix ingredients together and press into baking pan. Add a little water if necessary to further moisten.

Bake at 350°F for 30 – 40 min.

Stuffing can either be baked separately or stuffed into a turkey or chicken for cooking, although I’ve always made it separately.

You are loved by an almighty God,

Darlene Schacht

  1. Usually have stuffing out of a packet, but I do remember Dad making a few different ones one year; I think one of them was sausage and chestnut.

  2. I love my mom’s cornbread dressing…for some reason we call it dressing instead of stuffing. We always had bread dressing before moving from Illinois to Texas…they add cornbread & I LOVE it! My grandma used to make oyster dressing & it was not too tasty to me.

  3. A little secret about me is my favorite stuffing is Stove Top’s seasonal stuffing with Cranberries … delicious. My mom makes the stuffing for Thanksgiving so I have my secret delight with another meal, but those cranberries add a touch of surprise that I love : )

  4. Oh, the most unique ingredient has to be apricots. Didn’t prefer it, but it was unique! Gluten free recipe is not really a recipe, but the Lucy’s GF cookies are out of this world!!!!

  5. Mmmmm, stuffing! I make the Barefoot Contessa’s stuffing every year. It’s SO easy but SO good! This recipe above looks pretty great. Will have to try! Thanks again for the great giveaways. I love checking out what you have each day. xox

  6. My favorite Stuffing is my mother-in-law’s stuffing. She makes it with Hot sausage. Absolutely love it. I have the recipe and actually make it all year round. Great for breakfast too!!

  7. I love stuffing. I remember one Thanksgiving the stuffing was cooked in the bird and wasn’t completely finished when we attempted to eat it.

  8. We’ve used my husband’s “BigMama’s” cornbread dressing recipe for every family holiday gathering for years! It is delicious – but the best thing is the whole family making it together!

  9. Everyone in our family LOVES stuffing so we have moist stuffing, baked stuffing, sage stuffing, etc. and still we never have enough. The smell of the stuffing make Thanksgiving!

  10. I always enjoyed my mom’s turkey stuffing. Unfortunately, I never got the recipe. Making a point of writing things down now so I can pass down traditions.

  11. I have followed the same recipe my mom always used, some years i add apples and cranberries others I keep it the same. It has been a favorite of my husbands for a long time. Of course we call it dressing since I never stuff it in the bird for Thanksgiving or Christmas!

I love the holiday time and all the baking we get to do!

  12. I use my grandmother’s stuffing recipe. My Mom worked so all the cooking was done by my grandmother and then me as I got older. I remember the first year after my grandmother went to heaven. I got a call from my Mom asking me how to cook the turkey! I love the holidays and all the different foods prepared, but I think the thing that conjures up the most memories is the smell of the turkey and stuffing cooking up in the oven.

  13. I have memories of my mother making home made turkey stuffing. Although I usually prefer to cook everything rather than buying packaged mixes, we have guests every year for the holidays and they prefer Pepperidge Farm Stuffing, which is really good. Darlene’s recipe sounds easy, though. I would really be interested in a gluten free recipe, however, as we have a couple of people in our family who need to eat GF. Thanks!

  14. As I suppose most children do, I hated stuffing growing up. As I got a little older, I loved Stove Top Stuffing (still do – yum!) and use it in a variety of ways such as using it in place of bread crumbs or oatmeal in meatloaf. I lived on Stove Stop Stuffin Mix and that is what I grew up eating on Thanksgiving Day. Then, after I tried my mother-in-law’s homemade stuffing one Thanksgiving many years ago. Now, I love all kinds of stuffing. For years I have made my mother-in-law’s stuffing recipe, but Darlene, I’m excited to try yours, which I will do for an upcoming family dinner. Thank you for the recipe. God bless you all and have a very merry and blessed Christmas.

  15. I am a stuffing lover! I use the recipe from Better Homes and Garden’s, but my secret addition are dried cranberries. I love the sweet and savory combination!

  16. I have to say stuffing is one of my families favorite part of our Christmas meal. My kids come back for second helpings and I eat it cold the next day on my turkey sandwich. My husband is the stuffing maker, and adds celery, cranberries, onion, sage, butter and he cuts up the turkey giblets and fry’s them and ads that as well. Yum

  17. This is the first time I have made Thanksgiving dinner. In my mid fifties, and many failed attempts in the past, I was apprehensive. We have always gone to my in-laws , but they left for the south (where they winter) before Thanksgiving. My mother in law makes the best stuffing. It is traditional stuffing, but oh so good!! According to my adult kids, I nailed her stuffing recipe as well as the rest of the meal. It felt good to succeed.

  18. I’m not a huge fan of stuffing, but I usually eat a little of it. But one year, at my brother-in-law’s house, he made the stuffing, and it had raisins in it !! Yuck! I hate raisins, so I really didn’t want to try this stuffing at all. No raisins in the stuffing please…

  19. iblove making our family’s stuffing at thanksgiving and Christmas!our recipe has been in our family for years, and nothing beats the smell of the carrots, onions and celery sautéing as the littles (kids) in the family tears the white day-old bread for the bowl! I just loved helping in the kitchen at a young age, and now my own kids help prepare this heartwarming dish as well! :)
