When the low fat craze hit in the late 80’s and early 90’s the grocery industry saw the emergence of what my friend Lindsey calls ‘faux foods”.

Faux is a French work used to describe something made to resemble something else. The original French word means false, fake, imitation or artificial.

You know, as in faux fur or faux leather.

It is not the real deal.

So many pre-packaged food items out there are the same. They are simply not the real deal. However, they promise to satisfy us with an acceptable imitation of the real thing, only with less fat, less calories or less sugar.

I have a little issue with faux foods. Oh, I used to consume them regularly. A little fake cake here; a little artificial candy there; some puffed-up, air-filled crackery contraptions as a snack.

The trouble for me with faux foods is they really don’t satisfy. Most are empty carbs with little protein or fat so they have no satiating power making me feel full.

Instead, they simply spike my blood sugar. Then I crash and an hour or so later, I’m hungry again.

They also are pricey. Have you ever sat and figured out what you are paying per pound for faux foods? Some of them are nearly $5.00 a pound!!!

I have found that I have much better success with snacks the way God made them: an apple with natural peanut butter; a handful of dried cherries and raw almonds. Cut up veggies dipped in hummus or popcorn anyone?

How about you? Ever been hooked on a faux food? What real foods do you eat for snacks that are yummy and satisfying too?

Please tell.

Real women everywhere want to know. :-)

Blessings,

  1. It is a nice change of pace in taste than some of the other dishes you may already be
serving. Dice the fries and scatter them around the chicken on the baking sheet.
Place the dried beans in a large pot or bowl and
    cover completely with cold water.

  2. Hello there, You have done a great job. I will definitely digg it and
personally suggest to my friends. I’m sure they will be benefited from this website.

  3. A Spray tan can be easily rinsed off within a few hour of the application and this
makes it the most effective method for tanning. Linoleum tile is increasing in popularity because it is made of natural materials with low-energy processes.
As wooden flooring provides elegant and royal look it needs routine maintenance and
the manufacturer itself provides you with the caring tips.

  4. This is very fascinating, You’re an excessively professional
blogger. I’ve joined your rss feed and look forward to looking for more of your great post.

  5. Hi there! This is my first visit to your blog! We
are a team of volunteers and starting a new project in a community in
the same niche. Your blog provided us beneficial information to work on.
You have done a marvellous job!

  6. Hello there! I could have sworn I’ve visited this web site before but after browsing through a few
of the posts I realized it’s new to me. Nonetheless, I’m definitely
happy I stumbled upon it and I’ll be bookmarking it and checking back often!

  7. May I just say what a comfort to uncover a person that actually understands what they’re
talking about over the internet. You certainly know how to bring
an issue to light and make it important. More people have to check this out and understand
this side of the story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular given that
    you definitely have the gift.

  8. baby seedless cucumbers from Costco (2 lb bag) with some Kirkland Balsamic Vinegar drizzled on them sliced up in a bowl.

  9. Peanut Butter balls.
Natural peanut butter, gluten free oatmeal, i mix about a cup of each together, roll them into tiny 1 inch balls. Roll the pbb in stevia and cinnamon. sometimes i roll them in protein powder too. they are gluten free and yeast free.

  10. My girlfriend had subscribed to your new posts, Karen, and now I have – anyway, she forwarded this new post to me today – as earlier this week we were talking about “shopping around the perimeter” as encouraged by Lysa on her DVD Session #2!
I like all the comments from these women – and hope to give some a try!
I hope to get to a point where I can find that a fruit will feel satisfying as my only source of “sweet”. :) And I will get there by God’s grace and being empowered to do so! :)

Thanks Karen! I’ll be around more often now that I will get your new posts too!

  11. my favorite snack right now – hummus with homemade pita chips. Brush some olive oil on a pita, sprinkle with sea salt & cumin, bake at 350 for 5-7 minutes – then cut and enjoy! I love cut up fruit and a bowl full of grapes too.

  12. I, too, am a believer in eating foods the way God intended them to be, without preservatives, etc. .

I do have to say, though, that I do not have a sweet tooth like most people — my husband makes up for my lack of sweet tooth for me :) My downfall is kettle cooked chips. My body tends to crave salty foods more than sweet foods, and both can be detrimental to one’s health, if you go overboard with one, the other, or both.

Even though I love salty foods, I have attempted to implement healthier foods into mine and my family’s diet. Proteins, raw vegetables, etc. are much more fulfilling than the bad stuff. And plus, you feel better after you eat it, and not so guilty.

I enjoyed this post! Thank you!

  13. I, too, get tired of faux foods! One of my favorite snack plates consists of a sliced apple or pear, cheese, hummus, baked pita chips, a few olives and you can even add pieces of store-bought rotisserie chicken (without the skin) and call it dinner. Even my husband likes this. We put it all on a platter or tray, and take it out to the front porch swing and watch the sunset. It’s a great snack or meal. I also make stuffed french toast and I altered the recipe to be a little more “diet friendly”. Take two slices of wheat bread, spread with 1 tbs. of peanut butter and 1 tbs. of nutella, top with 1/2 of a sliced banana. Press into a sandwich and dredge in whipped egg whites (or egg substitute) and pan sautee in 1 tbs. of diet margerine. Slowly brown both sides (like a grilled cheese or something) and serve with a little sprinkle of powdered sugar! Oh my goodness, you will think you have died and gone to Heaven!!!! Yum!

  14. I used to exist on 2 “faux foods” that are not really foods at all, Dr Pepper and peppermint LifeSavers. I also ate every cracker or chip that came within 10 feet of me. But then about a year ago I discovered Tosca Reno’s “Eat Clean Diet”. Since that time I have been trying to ensure that the majority of my food comes in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables. I am retraining myself to shop the “outer perimeter” of the the grocery store, bypassing pre-processed and canned or otherwise preserved foods. I have not been and probably will never be 100% successful at avoiding canned foods (they are just too darned easy to use) but I have noticed how much better I feel, how much more energy I have and how the pounds have been melting off.

Right now on my desk I have a container of steel cut oatmeal, 2 ruby red grapefruits, a mango, 2 apples and a kiwi in case I get hungry and need a snack. I find keeping a selection available eliviates tastebud boredom. :) I also find having the fresh fruit and veggies available prevent me from snacking on all the bakery goods that always seem to be circling in a holding pattern at my office.

We will be starting a “Made to Crave” small group at my church in 2 weeks, I am already signed up. I am looking forward to learning new ways to fill my craving with the Lord instead of food.

  15. Just a few days ago as I was perusing the aisles of the grocery store I looked longingly at one of my former “faux food” favorites – devils food snack cakes. Problem was I would buy the box and eat the whole thing in one or two sittings – not two at a time as they were intended. This is a great reminder – I am trying to pay more attention to this and look at the ingredient lists in what I am buying.

  16. Since beginning Weight Watchers-for the 3rd time!-I’ve given myself permission to pay $5 lb. for washed spinach, and other veggies and fruits. Oh, they are so clean on my palate! And yes, filling! I can think more clearly and I feel better. When I do eat a high calorie, bad-fatty type food, it coats my tongue and doesn’t taste as good as I remember. Oh, for grace to continue this lifestyle! blessings, k

  17. Any type of fruits is good for a snack or a pick me up. Yogurt is a good choice but I would not recommend the flavored one. Yogurt coupled with a fruit of your choice and some nuts make a good and filling smoothie. We just have to be creative with our choice while ensuring that we are not consuming too much simple sugars which will give a temporary “fix”.

  18. I love how you addressed this issue. It makes much more sense that the “empty calorie” phrase. I have become a lable reader. I skip the calorie content and look specifically for protein, carbs, fat and fiber. My new favorite is Greek yogurt and fruit with a little sprinkle of Kashi cereal. It reminds me of eating ice cream for breakfast.

  19. I love a handful of almonds (a small one that is) and an apple as a snack. I’ve also learned that chewing a piece of gum helps take away the snacking tendency.

  20. I cut out all processed foods from my diet a year ago and have never felt better! My favorite snack is low fat cottage cheese with strawberries and bee pollen sprinkled on top. It may sound weird, but the bee pollen is really sweet and packed with great nutrients.

  21. Yes, my faux “food” of choice (and it can barely be labeled a food) is black coffee loaded with powdered creamer and sugar. It staves off hunger long enough for me to be able to skip eating, only to later cause major blood sugar spikes, cravings for sugary treats, and the need for more coffee to perpetuate the cycle.

God is seeing me through this caffeine addiction, and with him I will be victorious! For years, I haven’t been willing to truly hand him my food and caffeine addiction problems. This time, since going through Lysa Terkeurst’s “Made to Crave”, things are different. And I don’t mean EASY…just different.

This week, by decreasing my sugar and caffeine intake; eating more veggies and protein; decreasing my mindless eating and skipped meals; and turning to God for help, my weight is down 6 pounds on the scale! Now I just need to be careful not to celebrate with something unhealthy. I tend to reward myself with the very things that got me to this point to begin with.

  22. Karen, I can identify! Those faux foods that promise lower calories, lower sugar, or lower carbs are those “deceiftul” foods the Bible talks about. They promise but they cannot deliver. And in telling our minds they are lower in sugar or whatever we are trying to lower.. then we feel free to eat more, and not less!

I’ve also noticed when they try to manipulate the food content that a low fat option will generally have more carbs than the regular. Or you will notice that a low carb option, will have more sugar or more fat. They really just manipulate it to show whatever it is that you want to see! We have to be wise and realize that the way God made our food is best! I agree that natural fruit and nuts are the best snacks!

    God is so good!
