The nine foot wonder scooped up our attention. Such a thing of beauty with a price tag double our budget. As we meandered passed by this gorgeous tree, we couldn’t help overhear their conversation.
“I want the tallest, largest tree!” In case her husband didn’t hear, she raised her voice a few decibels each time she reiterated her desire. Her kids joined in; their petitions echoed across the tree lot. “We want the biggest tree! We want the biggest tree!”
Of course they wanted that magnificent tree. It was glorious; perfectly round with no missing limbs. I could all but see her visions of it illuminating her home, dazzling from floor to ceiling.
But that tree was meant to nestle in another home.
Our family has chosen our Christmas tree from the same lot for over a decade. The sweet fellas who own it graciously do all the work. After showing them the meager tree we’d picked out, they cut and loaded it on top our car.
Not until the tree was secure in its stand and upright in our living room did it dawn on us: the grand tree had made its way home with us!
We oohed and aahed and clapped and cheered! Who would have guessed a simple mix-up and three extra feet of a Fraser fir could bring so much delight?
That tree filled our home with glowing delight for one month. But the joy of unexpectedly receiving something lovely and desired has lived in our memories.
We re-tell this story each year. It was a small treat in the grand scheme of things, but a sweet treat nonetheless. I pray this season holds several unexpected, grace-filled surprises for you too.

What is hanging on your front door?
I have a handmade colonial swag with a pineapple, oranges, apples, lemons and limes that my daughter and I made in 1996. First time I let her use a glue gun. :-)

I have a beautiful wreath with a teddy bear made of a “tow sack” in the middle. I purchased the wreath a long time ago, added the bear and altho I have other beautiful wreaths I always go back to this one. Call me nostalgic!!! :D

An artificial green wreath with some funky pewter ornaments & ribbon added on. It’s a mix of traditional, vintage, & funky… kind of like me. It’s quite an appropriate wreath for my little house.
Right now I don’t have anything hanging on my front door. I have a wreath that was given to us when we got married that I should get out and hang, but haven’t yet.
I made my own wreath this year (first time) with extra branches from the bottom of our Christmas tree. It smells lovely everytime I walk into the house. The husband helped me pick out the ribbons! Would like a long lasting wreath ;)

We have a handpainted folk art plaque that says, ‘Love came down at Christmas’ with a picture of a manger. Simple but profound.
I have a snowman on our door……I really like snowmen…but I would surely remove it for that wreath!!!:)

Nothing yet, but I have a worn pine wreath which has lost most of it’s decorations laying out – debating whether to hang it, redecorate it, or say goodbye to it…

Hanging on our front doors are green wreaths with big red bows. Hoping to have lights up by this weekend.
a wreath that I purchased years ago that still looks great. I love it.
Our front door is adorned with a faux green wreath with multi-colored lights (my sons choice) and tiny ‘grinchy’ green shatterproof ornaments (placed by my sons darling girlfriend) and right next to the front door sits my sons small Christmas tree with multi-colored lights & special ornaments! We are fortunate to have our front door under our carport so it’s well protected! So add to the display an array of snowmen & winter wonderland style decor!
