Love, Pie & Jesus with Guest Angela Perritt

This week in our reading of A Life That Says Welcome (chapters 4-7) we come to the topic of food in chapter 7, Sure, Stay for Supper! In it I tell of my first “company disaster”. Those early days were such a time of trial and error (heavy on the error!).

Looking back, I am thankful I didn’t give up. Romans 12:13 says, “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (NIV 1984)

Sometimes, we just need to keep practicing!

Today we have a guest dropping by to help us with a little idea boost for having company over for dessert. She’s gonna help us practice by providing a no fail recipe and a glimpse into her sweet heart.

Meet my new cyber friend, the Jesus-loving Angela Perritt.

Angela is the wife to her high school sweetheart and mom to her 3 adorable little girls. Some of Angela’s favorite things in life are dancing with her daughters, laughing with her husband and loving her Lord with the amazing life He has given her.

You can find Angela at GoodMorningGirls.org where she encourages women to be in God’s Word on a daily basis through tech accountability groups. Angela’s goal in life is to inspire her children and others to love God greatly with their lives one day at a time.

Now, a great company’s coming dish from her home & heart:

Many times when we think of hospitality we think of the food or the way the house is decorated…..but let me suggest that the MOST important aspect of hospitality is not either of those.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of hospitality is how you make your guests feel the moment you open your home to them. That special moment sets the tone for the whole event.

Open your home like you open your heart. Full of love, a warm smile and an “I’m glad you’re here” embrace!

Now I’ll have to admit, I’m a hugger! I love to love on people! I was once told by some dear friends, who were from another country and whose custom it was NOT to hug the moment you meet them, to please try to restrain myself from hugging their mother the moment I met her.  Ha!

You’ll be proud to know that I restrained myself……until after the initial meeting at least!

I love to love on people and I love to welcome people into my home but like most women…..I have an “Achilles heal” in my desire to be hospitable…..my cooking!

I’m just not confident in that area… or at least I wasn’t for many years. I have burnt and thrown away my fair share of meals over the years but I’ve learned the more I try the better I’m getting.

So for those of you who love to open your homes, love to love on your guests the minute they walk across the threshold, but you hold back because you feel you can’t cook, well I have a very special family recipe I’d like to share with you today!

This recipe is super easy and extremely delicious…….it’s perfect for girls like us!

 Peanut Butter Pie

1- cup Peanut Butter

1- 8 oz Cream Cheese

1- Can Sweeten Condensed Milk

2- Pints Cool Whip

1- Graham Cracker crust

Mix all together (except 1 pint of Cool Whip….use that pint to cover the top of the pie)

Refrigerate for a few hours

Spread with remaining Cool Whip and garnish as desired.

Voilà! You have a super easy and yummy dessert that people will beg you to make again and again!

Wow! Doesn’t that look fabulous! Got three peanut-butter lovers in our home so we will be trying Angela’s pie recipe soon.

Now, let’s hear from you. What is a favorite pie you like to make (or buy!) at your home? Make plans to serve one soon to guests!

Or, do you too have a “company disaster” story to tell like the one I told in chapter 7? Please do. We can laugh with (not at) you!

One gal will be chosen at random to win a $15 gift card to Target to buy a new-fangled pie pan or casserole dish to use for company :-)

REMEMBER:  For this coming Friday’s idea swap and share, be thinking of your best decorating idea, tip, object, theme, centerpiece or DIY project. Bloggers, get a post ready. 1. This pie sounds amazing thank you! Last Christmas our toilet in our ONE bathroom was messed up bad and my niece (22) HAD to go really bad – bless her heart….it was terrible for her but funny to everyone else! :)

  2. So many of these sound great and easy, and I love to try new dessert recipes of all kinds, rarely making the same one repeatedly because there are so many good ones! Thankfully, I’ve never had a dessert disaster with all of my experimenting!

I have had near main-dish disaster, though. Hosting the Christmas party for my husband’s Sunday school class, I planned out the perfect complimentary menu for the items I would be making and set a schedule to begin each item so they would be done simultaneously. But the main items, pork tenderloin and beef brisket, did not cook in the amount of time I thought they would – not even close! Rather than give everyone food poisoning and have cold side dishes, we had our meat just prior to dessert. It was exceptionally good, so I think most people forgot that it wasn’t ready at the beginning of the meal!

  3. The peanut butter pie recipe sounds great and I have a peanut butter loving husband! My worst company disaster wasn’t due to my cooking (fortunately). Many years ago I threw a surprise 50th birthday party for a family member – a make your own sandwich party. I noticed that the turkey was going much faster than the ham so I made a ham sandwich to see if there was a problem. Okay, so there was something going on with the ham – you couldn’t chew it! I had purchased a couple of huge boneless hams from Sam’s and had taken them to the local butcher for slicing the day of the party – they sliced the hams nice & thin and the trays were beautiful. If only I had looked a little closer – they sliced them without removing the clear plastic covering . . .

  4. I like to make crunchy caramel apple pie and serve it with vanilla ice cream. My husband does not like pie but he LOVES this one. I actually have the ingredients sitting on my counter ready to bake up this weekend for whomever shows up!

  5. i have never made a “real” crust – but love the pumpkin pie recipe on the libby’s can (very yummy). our church ladies just hosted a “woman’s day” at our church and one of the speakers you can attend gave out tips on making pies and bread – pretty cool.

  6. My favorite pie to make is my mother-in-law’s apple pie. It is so simple and absolutely delicious. It is also interchangeable with fruit. My husband is a potter and we include his mom’s apple pie recipe with every pie plate we sell – in memory of her.

  7. Once I made an apple pie for my husband’s work dinner and put 2 Tbsps. of cinnamon instead of 2 tsps. He ended up picking up a pie at the grocery store and my pie ended up in the trash.

  8. Although we have our own tart cherry trees, my sons and husband prefer “Wilderness” brand store-bought cherry pie filling when I bake cherry pies. I make lots of cherrry jelly and jams with our own home grown fruit.

  9. I am just starting to try my hand in baking, mostly store bought mixes still. A favorite is banana bread from Fresh & Easy, I add walnuts or pecans to it. Other times I like to order pies from a local bakery where the owner uses only fresh ingredients. Our favorites are cranberry/apple pie and strawberry custard pie.

I look forward to trying Angela’s pie recipe, sounds pretty straight forward, especially for such a baking beginner as myself.

  10. I make so many desserts that it’s hard to pick one…I’d say one of my most requested is a French Silk Pie. So yummy :-) I also make a Twinkie Cake, the recipe for which I got from my hubby’s grandma. It’s a family recipe made with a chocolate cake and homemade twinkie filling. I always frost mine with a homemade fudge frosting, though his grandma has never frosted hers. I also love a good cheesecake :-)

I can’t think of any cooking disasters. I started cooking when I was 11 or 12, so by the time I was married, I was a pretty good cook. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything turn out poorly for guests, for which I’m VERY thankful!

  11. my favorite pie is a boston cream pie although it is not a pie but a cake. I put a thick layer of vanilla pudding between 2 layers of yellow cake, then top it off with a rich chocolate fudge icing! heavenly! my disaster in the kitchen was about 43 years ago when I was trying to get the attention of the new boy who moved into the neighborhood I baked an apple crisp and took to his house, his grandfather ended up breaking a tooth and they never let me live it down!

  12. Thanks for sharing that recipe!! I love yummy, simple, recipes!! It makes it easier for a mom of toddlers, like me, to have people over.

  13. My favorite pie is my Mom’s chocolate pie, but I’ve never tried to make it. I did make her strawberry pie this past summer when we had fresh berries from our garden, and it was yummy!

  14. A few weeks ago I was expecting my sister, brother-in-law, grown daughter, son-in-law, two nieces, a friend from out of town, and my two grown sons for dinner. Each niece was from a different coast and we live in Colorado. My husband and I were at a marriage retreat all weekend and got home after lunch on Sunday so I had prepared my jambalaya up to the point of adding rice, broth and shrimp which I would do that evening before everyone arrived. Add some French bread, my daughter was bringing a salad. Got it covered! I take the big pot out of the refrigerator with the jambalaya, take off the lid start to add rice and notice there is nothing in the pot! My grown son had stopped by the house and, since I didn’t put a sign on it, proceeded to eat the entire meal. “You said I am welcome to food in the refrigerator!” said the 25 year old. I took a deep breath and started from the beginning. Then, my husband’s sister called to say their daughter was sick and they were getting on an early flight home! After all that they didn’t even come. The rest of us enjoyed a great dinner.

  15. We live in the States but celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving (my husband is Canadian). We bought the turkey for a 10 person celebration. My husband put the turkey down while he rearranged the fridge in the garage, so he could make room for the turkey. Well, something else must of caught his attention, he finished and came inside. A couple of days later, I said, we need to see if the turkey had thawed out. Well it sure was, he forgot to put it in the fridge after he re-arranged it! So we had to scramble to go and purchase another turkey, but this time it had to be fresh due to our time constraints! Every year we still laugh about it!

    We love homemade apple pie!!

  16. My favorite is quick apple crisp: 350degrees
    5granny smith apples(peeled,cored, and sliced)Place in an 8in. baker
    Mix:
    1/4c. butter,melted
    1/2c. nuts,chopped
    9oz yellow cake mix (Jiffy)
    2Tbsp. sugar
    1Tbsp. cinnamon
stir until crumbly , sprinkle evenly over apples.
Bake 35-40 minutes until apples are tender and topping is golden brown
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream

  17. I love to make pies, I have been making my crusts since I was around 10years old. My grandma taught me how to make my crusts and I have never made a pie with out her pie crusts. In the spring I love strawberry rhubarb with a crumb topping and in the winter months I love a good old fashioned pecan pie.

  18. My favorite pie is a store bought Marie Calendar’s Chocolate pie with the oreo crust… YUM! But, I must admit, I will be trying this recipe SOON!!!
