One of my favorite Christmas memories happened one year as a result of a family tradition. Each year my mother withholds baby Jesus from her nativity set until Christmas Morning. One year, when her firstborn grandson was about three years of age, he asked her, “Grandmamma, where is baby Jesus?”

“He’s not been born yet. She explained to Patrick. “Jesus comes on Christmas Day. Then, you’ll find Him lying right here,” she added while pointing to the manger.

Like years past, Christmas came. Mom and Dad’s house was full of excitement as each family member arrived with their arms full of presents. We expected to exchange gifts and enjoy a time for food, fun, and celebration. Patrick expected something different. He came running into the house shouting, “Is He here, yet? Is He here? Has Jesus come?”

Mother took Patrick over to the nativity and there, cradled in the manger, was baby Jesus. He had come just as she had promised.

At the age of three, Patrick taught me to anticipate the Presence of Christ during Christmas—while I shop, decorate, wrap, bake and worship.

Christ’s presence may go unnoticed by the world, but for me, along with heaven, a few shepherds, three wise men, and others who have made room in their hearts, can experience all the glorious wonder that He brings when taking time to acknowledge His Presence.

  1. The sheep and other animals.
Because they knew too to worship this baby.
We are refered to as sheep gone astray, in the Bible….but these sheep knew who the Savior was.

  2. Joseph was very brave. First, he believed Mary when she said the child was of God. He did not abandon her or put her aside as required at that time, but stayed with her. He did not “know” her during her pregnancy, but married her after the child was born. (Mary must’ve been very persuasive!)

  3. It would have to be the shepherds. God loves us all, rich.poor.simple and fancy. The shepherds were simple, hard working, loving and they got to see the most special happening that will ever take place.

  4. My favorite after Jesus would be Joseph. What a godly man he must have been, following God’s plan, even though it must have been a very difficult situation.

  5. How about the innkeepers? The ones who turned the Holy family away…for no room at the inn? It’s hard to imagine our Savior born in a local hotel room. Though a lowly place…the stable is where HE needed to be born.

  6. We never had a nativity scene..hmm.. maybe Joseph. He must’ve been pretty patient to stick by Mary through all that.

  7. I have always loved the animals in the nativity. Ever since reading A Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado, the little lamb is my favorite!

  8. Anne, mother of Mary. Although not mentioned in the Gospels, Anne is who I most enjoy. She was not put on this earth to do great things herself, but she raised the woman chosen by God to do the Greatest Thing. My life is nothing in the grand scope of the universe, yet God has called my daughter to His priesthood. I am very humbled that I am allowed to be her mother. Blessed Anne played a very important background role.

  9. My favorite is Mary. I love how she “pondered these things in her heart.” It’s so good to do that; to just think on things and allow God to reveal His Will and direction to us; to make His thoughts our thoughts.

  10. The angels that proclaimed “Fear not, for behold i bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people, that unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord!” Thank You, God, for your beautiful plan of salvation!
