National Pie Day Giveaway with Linda Hundt

NOTE: I’ve had a lot of giveaways going on lately. All winners announced Monday. I’m traveling to Texas to speak this weekend so I’ll pick them when I return. :-)

Got pie?

Today you should treat yourself to a slice because it is national pie day!

In honor of this momentous occasion, allow me to introduce you to my friend Linda Hundt.

linda

Linda is the owner of Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe {two locations in Michigan} and an award-winning baker. She has won numerous national pie championships, won Best of Show in a Crisco competition and was the winner of the Food Network’s Amazing Pie Challenge. {She’s also won dozens of other regional and national titles!}

Linda’s original shop is just 10 miles from me in a small town in Michigan. It is a lovely, retro place full of lace and pink and PIE!!! I visited there several times, wrote about her awesome mission statement in one of my books and love to treat my family to a pie or muffin or cookie from her shop when I’m able.

Linda and I actually were high school cheerleaders at schools across town from each other back in the 1980’s. How fun it was to connect with her as adults when I wandered into her shop with my kids one day.

She has just released a cookbook and, in honor of national pie day, is giving a signed copy away to one of you! Simply comment letting us know your favorite pie. {Leaving the recipe is optional but we’d love that!}

I’ll go first.

Key Lime

  • 2 cups graham-cracker crumbs
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups sweetened condensed milk
  • 8 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed Key lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons grated Key lime zest

Directions

Heat oven to 375°F. Combine graham-cracker crumbs, butter, and sugar in a medium bowl; mix well. Press into a deep-dish pie plate, and bake until lightly browned, about 10-12 minutes.

Reduce oven temperature to 325°F. Whisk together condensed milk and egg yolks. Add Key lime juice and zest and mix until smooth. Pour into the crust.

Bake until the center is set but not over-done, 15 to 17 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack. Chill before serving. Garnish with real whipped cream. Enjoy!

Your turn. What is your favorite pie?

  1. There’s nothing better than a lemon pie with graham cracker crust! Of course, no one seems to match it like my grandmother. Guess she’s making lemon pies for all those loved ones in Heaven!

  2. We are a pie family meaning we prefer pies over cakes so I like all kinds of pies. My favorites would have to be my grandmothers lemon meringue and chocolate cream pies. She would always have one in the pie safe when we would visit, special times! She did not use a recipe so unfortunately I don’t have her recipes :(

  3. My mom’s fresh refrigerator blueberry pie made from fresh we picked blueberries when we visit her in Midland, MI from Iowa!!

  4. Although I have many, many favorites, I love YOUR peanut butter pie that you shared your recipe for in an online study about hospitality. YUM!!

  5. Pie is my favorite dessert and my favorite item to bake. I love fruit pies the best, most especially blackberry. However, lemon cream is a close second.

  6. Pumpkin is my fave, but I wouldn’t turn down apple, peach, strawberry, marionberry…well you get the picture! ;) Most any pie is wonderful and I love to bless others with them.

  7. My favorite would be my mom’s pumpkin pie. Plenty of spice and not to soft. I don’t like wet pumpkin pies. After that would be a crum topped Apple pie. My grandmother made BlackBerry cobbler with two sugar crusts, I’m thinking that would be a nice treat about now. Call it a pie?? Who knows.

  8. My favorite pie is ANY pie with a pie crust made by my Mother !! she makes the BEST pie crust and she is 89 years old….

    Any pie crust ….but she makes a very nice apple and butterscotch and just anything with her CRUST

  9. My favorite pie is banana cream. A ver close second is apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Yummy!

  10. My grandmother used to make a caramel pie with meringue that she called burnt sugar pie. I miss her making them for me! The best!!
