After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to “listen” to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her.

It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue.

She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but they were helping her grow closer to God.

Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title of these thoughts-turned -book, Jesus Calling.

In keeping with the theme of Jesus Calling, I’m offering the following as a giveaway to one of my cyber friends:

~ The book/journal Jesus Calling with space each day for your own journaling.

~ A set of fine-tip Sharpies–my favorite kind of pen :-)

~ A week-at-a-glance schedule pad to write down your appointments with God & others.

~ A pair of fuzzy, shea-infused, lavender-scented lounge socks from Bath & Body Works to keep you comfy when you are spending time with God.

~ Two packets of flavored hot cocoa–one raspberry & one tiramasu.

Will you leave a comment today to be entered in the drawing? Tell us what distractions keep you from connecting with God during your day.

Or what changes you’d like to see in this area.

Or, if you’d just like the giveaway to help you in your quest to connect with God, simply say “I’m in!”

The winner will be announced Monday.

Speaking of winners, congrats to the winner of 31 Days to a Younger You. She is: Lana. Send your home address to me at [email protected]

Happy Weekend, everyone!

  1. Hi Karen,

I’ve tried for years to have more quality time with God. When I’m spending time with Him I just can’t seem to “hear” that still small voice, and it has discouraged me a lot. It makes getting up early in the morning to spend time with Him hard. Now I make it a choice to get up early in the morning, and it makes my whole day just much more peaceful even if I don’t feel like I’ve heard personally from Him. I have heard that even when we don’t feel like we’re receiving anything from God’s word, that we still are, because we are feeding our spirits.

I use to journal many years ago on what I felt like God might be saying to me, and it was very helpful, and I would like to get back into it. Having guidelines from a book like this would simply be awesome! I would love to be entered into your draw, your whole prize pack looks good! Thank you!

  2. My nemesis is the tyranny of the urgent. “Stuff” has to be done today!! One skit at MOPS years ago when my teens were small really gave me a visual I have never forgotten. When you get up for the day and walk past your family room, image Jesus patiently sitting there on your sofa waiting for you to sit down and visit with him. How long does he have to wait??

  3. I often let my kids, school work, and Facebook get in the way of me answering the phone call when God is calling. I think what people are saying on Facebook is more important than the phone call or my homework is. I often, too, want to sit down and watch t.v. when I am done with all of it, when I have free time.

I need to be disciplined enough to sit down instead of turning on the t.v. or opening up my laptop to go to Facebook.

  4. My life seems so out of control right now with things that just press in and consume. Sick Mom,45 min. away, family business that has taken on new life and I am stepping in trying to fill my husbands shoes as he lost his battle with cancer, a teenager totally rebelling against me (her step mom now), oh i wish for more me time, quiet time with the Lord!
    Blessings,

  5. My “To Do”, list, real or perceived, doesn’t get in the way- I allow it to get in the way of my alone time with my Father. Seeing my house in order and tidy much of the time takes presidence over my desire to hear from God. Not that I say this in my heart- just the opposite- but time after time with the best of intentions to start my day kneeling at the feet of Jesus I find myself loading the dish washer, doing laundry and vacuuming floors! Oh, Lord I pray the hunger in me for more of You to become greater than my desire for a perfectly kept house!

  6. I’m in! Love your Encouraging words. I’m doing 90 days with the King and am really enjoying my time with God in the morning.

  7. I’m in! Thanks for your words of encouragement. I sometimes have a hard time setting priorities – and put ‘being busy’ before time spent with God.

  8. My biggest distraction is also, ironically, my biggest blessing: children. I set my alarm clock to get up early every morning, planning to spend quality quiet time with my Jesus and starting the day off right. Inevitable, nine times out of ten, a little blessing will wake up EARLY! The earlier I get up, the more the Devil fights, and the earlier they get up. My days just aren’t the same when they don’t begin with focused devotional time!

  9. Distractions? Phew, it sometimes seems like the whole of my life! I teach, so have hundreds of interactions with others every single day – I’ll often get to the end of the day and realize I’ve not had a second to hear Jesus calling. :-( This post has shocked me: I’ll put a large post-it on my desktop to remind me to stop and take a Jesus-breath every now and then!

  10. Thank you for your devo and this blog today. Then Lord has been talking to me about this a lot at the beginning of this new year. I heard someone say that we need to set an appointment with God everyday just like we would set an appointment for the doctor or dentist and try to keep that appointment. I have been working on this, sometimes I am late and sometime miss one. Lord help me.
    Thanks,
    Denise

  11. I certainly fail to answer my Heavenly Father’s calls all the time. I am working to overcome this by scheduling time with the Lord each day. I heard someone on the radio the other day say that if you want to have a relationship with Jesus then just do the things you would do in a relationship. It isn’t profound or anything I mean, it’s pretty much common sense, but it had never hit me like that before. It was like “Oh, of course, Lord, that’s it!”

  12. For me, it’s often my desire to have some “me” time instead of “me and God” time once I get a free moment from the kids. I’m really wanting to work on this!

  13. Unfortunately God is calling and I fail to answer sometimes. I so want to make my appointments with Him first and foremost. I have recently created my quiet place for my devotions and now making the time to be there. I know that He will meet me there when I go. Thanks for the wonderful devotion and reminder that He is always there for us.
