Giving Double

12 Days of Christmas giveaway at KarenEhman.comHi! I’m Lynn Cowell , a friend of Karen’s and a fellow Proverbs 31 speaker. My heartbeat is to set women of all ages on the path toward wise choices by leading them to the only love that can fill the love gap in their hearts. My husband, Greg, and I live in North Carolina with our three children (when they’re not all at college
).

“Happy Thanksgetting”

The TV commercial hyping up Black Friday put into words what I feared most when it came to Christmas: that my kids would make Christmas all about what they would get.

So, my husband and I decided the best way to help them get that Christmas isn’t about getting was to teach them to be generous givers.

I still remember my heart pounding, like the drum set featured in the JC Penney catalog on my lap. If only Mom and Dad would get me everything I circled and not just one! I would dream.

I wanted to create that kind of excitement in the hearts of my kids when it came to giving. So when they were little, Greg and I had them circle items in a catalog too – the Samaritan’s Purse catalog. We allowed each of our children to choose a
gift from them to someone in need. Chickens, medical care, goats or food, this opportunity gave our kids the chance to make a difference in someone else’s life and to begin practicing generosity. As they grew older, we asked them to choose a non-profit that was close to their heart to give to. One daughter chose hope for girls rescued from sex trafficking; another help for those on skid row. At this point, they were giving … but it was still our money.

This same year, each of our children received gifts from Greg and I that were not just for them, but benefitted those who created the gifts. Journals, purses and jewelry, normally purchased at the mall, became blessings to both my kids and to the artisans, helping them to make a living in a dignified way.

You can only imagine my joy last Christmas as I watched my kids exchange gifts that were double blessings; blessings for the receiver and the maker. One daughter gave her sister a necklace helping to feed the poor. Another daughter gave her best friend jewelry that spreads hope.

Now, they too, are not just giving once … they’re giving twice.

My heart just soars as my girls are learning to not just be beautiful on the outside with gorgeous jewelry and fashionable bags; they are learning gorgeous is more than a face in the mirror. Beautiful is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control; captivating characteristics that the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit. They are becoming magnetic!

Today, I’m giving away a Magnetic gift set including a matching set of earrings and necklace from Fashion and Compassion and a signed copy of my latest book “Magnetic: Becoming the Girl He Wants”.

  1. My sister in law Anjell. She has struggled for many years and loves to help people, Especially kids, and I want her to see the beauty that we see in her.

  2. My grandniece Elizabeth (I answered yesterday’s question too, but on Karen’s twitter as I was confused where to post. It was directly from the email I received so maybe that’s how I confused the matter.)

  3. My daughter – two years ago she overcame immense obstacles and focused on Christ. What has blossomed now between her, her husband & her two daughters is amazing and how she is bringing up her two daughters. I want her to know what a miracle she is.

  4. One of the teens/young adults at church. Their statuses on social media often break my heart as they’ve bought into the lies of the enemy about their beauty and self-worth.

  5. There are many young ladies on my heart that I desire to reach out to for the Lord. I would have to pray about it more.

  6. My daughter Sarah, who has a dismissive view of herself. Perhaps I could explain your gift giving strategy to her and it might help her see herself as the Father sees her.

  7. My oldest daughter, Mary-Hamilton. She is approaching the age where the world will tell her how to view her body and on what to judge her beauty. We want her to learn to see herself as the Lord sees her- beautiful.

  8. One of our younger, single mom, Genora,is looking for a job and taking GED classes. She feels like no one will hire her because she has bad teeth. I’d love for her to feel beautiful.

  9. My granddaughter(s), yes all or them, but I will start with the oldest and work downward. First time this year I was able to shop with her this time of year and had her choose something she would like with the understanding Gramma was buying it for Toys for Tots. She was all for it, so glad her parents have begun the share what you have no matter how small your original portion is.

  10. My niece who is six. My brother’s family does not believe in God. I gave both my nephew and niece Bibles this year in hope that both will read it and learn how much God loves us. I’m praying that the Holy Spirit will convict them and that they will accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

  11. My niece, Suki Jo. The things she is exposed to at school and with her dad. My sister is trying but I want so much for “my” precious girl to become all God has for her.

  12. My six year old daughter. She is at the age when kids pick up attitudes from others at school that don’t follow what I have taught her.

  13. My Niece Jordan – she is in her first year of college and struggling with what life is supposed to look like. I would love for her to have the confidence to just be herself!
