MOMS! Pressing Pause devotion now available! By Karen Ehman & Ruth Schwenk

I am so excited to be releasing my 9th book today! Pressing Pause: 100 Quiet Moments for Moms to Meet with Jesus is a devotional book for moms. Once upon a time, just last spring, this is what the idea looked like:

The original page from my writing idea notebook.
The original page from my writing idea notebook where I began to sketch out the verses for the devotions in the book.

I coauthored this book with my friend Ruth Schwenk from The Better Mom. Here is the description:

Kids bickering? Schedule jam-packed? Dishes and laundry both piled up high? Perhaps it’s time you pressed pause.

Whether you’re juggling a career, kids’ schedules, and church commitments or you’re covered in spit-up and anxious about what the next eighteen years might hold, you can carve out a few quiet moments to rejuvenate your spirit.

Pressing Pause offers you a calm way to start your day, to refresh yourself in Jesus and drink deeply of His presence so that you are ready to pour out love, time, and energy into the people who matter most to you.

These 100 encouraging devotions for moms will help you begin each day with scripture, drawing on God’s power, ingesting His Word, and learning practical ways to love and serve more like His son.

Just a few minutes each day can help you center your heart and mind on what God has for you as His beloved daughter. So resist the rush. Halt the hustle. Press pause and find some calm in the chaos.

  1. My four girls are 12, 10, 7, and 5. We homeschool, so between that and getting everyone to and from lots of extra activities, I definitely could use a pause button now and then. I love both Karen Ehman and Ruth Schwenk and have enjoyed learning from both of them at Hearts at Home!

  2. My life as a mom is very busy, very stressful, yet very rewarding! My daughter is 3.5 years old and I have had the privilege of staying home with her since she was born. This was not our original plan, but she had some medical issues that made it necessary. As a nurse, I felt I was in a position to take the best care of her, and my mommy instinct told me it was the right thing to do. I decided to take advantage of the time I had off work and started grad school, which I will complete in less than 6 weeks! I am excited and nervous about my new role as a Nurse Practitioner and plan to return to work 2 days a week in the fall. My husband is able to work from home 2 days a week, so we have decided to homeschool our little one. He is in college as well, so the concept of free time is not one we know well! This combined with the stress of taking care of a high needs toddler are at times very overwhelming, and I know I need to look up and cast my cares on God more often than I do. I truly desire the ability to allow Him to work more in my life in order to allow me to be a better mother, wife, and child of Christ. Thank you for the inspiration!

  3. I am a stay-at-home min with three little ones ages 7, 5, and 3. I love them so much, but I definitely need to “press pause” each hour as it is tiring. Praying for God to show me how to disciple each baby each hour of the day. Thankful for encouraging women like you who are on this journey with me.

  4. I’m a single mother with two kids 23 and 14. I really think this book would be good for me, because my 14 year old is giving me little problems and sometimes I lose it. I am all out of solutions to our problems and want to throw in the towel often. I have been in childcare for 20+ years and still can’t figure out how to parent my son.

  5. Mom to two girls – 11 + 12. I work out of the home 2 days and from home the rest of the week. Loved your devotional today at Proverbs 31…. were you at my house yesterday because you described me perfectly!! Thanks for the perfect words at the perfect time!!

  6. I am a working mom of 2 kids, ages 3 & 8. I’m about to start grad school again too…b/c that’s good to add to my already full plate, right?! I work hard & love my kids to pieces. Balance is a struggle everyday, but some days are better than others. My life as a mom isn’t much different than anyone else’s, but I would love (& need to) re-center my search for balance with God at the center.

  7. I’m the mother of 9 month old that works part time from home and part time in the office. This quarter our son seems to be constantly sick. Finding peace and patience is a goal.

  8. My season as a Mom is now is full Grandmommy mode! I have 2 responsible, family loving kids age 33 & 30 and 5 wonderful Grands ages 15 through 10 months. I am so thankful to be in this season God has blessed me with as I get to keep my baby granddaughter a few days a week ? Thank you always Karen, I love your blog posts on Proverbs 31!!?

  9. I am a homeschooling mom of 4, ages 12, 9, 7, and 2. I needed this post so very much today…God is good. I am thankful for His encouragement through other believers and moms. And I would love to read your new devotional…I could use some pauses.

  10. I have three children. My oldest (a boy) is almost 10. Then I have two daughters – one 7 and the other 4. I am a stay at home mom who home schools. I also am very involved at my church with the little kids – teaching them the many truths of the Bible. I also try to keep up with the housework through all of that as well as take time to do Bible study and for myself. It is hard to do and I am not the best at it, but I do my best – that is all the Lord asks for.

  11. Hello,
I am blessed to be a SAHMom of 3 children ages: 17, 6, and 4. The past 9 months have been a season of trials and triumphs. My husband has manditorily working 15 nights on with 1 night off. I don’t even know what day of the week it is most of the time, if it wasn’t for school routine keeping us steady, I am not sure how our days would be. I know and trust God has this season for a purpose and He is the one strengthening us daily. I would love to find a pause button more often for God’s encouragement and Word.

  12. Hello, though I am not a stay at home mom, I do have a 13 year old son who is just amazing. I am a mom who works full time, goes to college full time, and then in my “spare” time my husband and I mentor a young boys youth group. They are boys who between the ages of 12-21. We teach them life skills, leadership, brotherhood, to love God and how to become productive men. They are my kids as well and at any given time I may 12 to 20 with our family. These boys don’t have father or mother figures in their home and it has been put on our hearts to minister to these young men. God has blessed us in so many ways to be able to do so!

  13. I’m a SAHM to two lil guys, 3.5 years old and 9 months. It’s hard balancing the needs of these two different ages and finding time for myself.

  14. Hi! I am a stay at home mom with three kids ages 11, 8, and 6. I love how sports, Girl Scouts, gymnastics, art class, Spanish class, and dance help my kids to be well rounded, make friends, and be part of a team. Lately, these afterschool activities have really run me around…if you let them, they can run your life.

Just today, oldest at basketball 5:00 with pickup at 6:30, in the middle has baseball 6:00-6:45, and our little one has gymnastics 6-7 in another part of town! No time for a sit down family dinner tonight..is all this running around worth it?

  15. Would love, love, love a copy of this book. I have 3 girls – 6 and twins who are 4. I am currently a busy stay at home mom, but looking to get back in the workforce this fall. The post at proverbs 31 brought me here today and it spoke directly to me. I didn’t realize I had an anger problem (among other things like impatience, controlling, selfish, etc) until I was a mother. But, being a mother has brought me back to the church and my belief in God. This would be awesome for me as encouragement day to day.

  16. I am a SAHM of 5 kiddos… 13, 10, 7 and 4 year old twins. It can feel SO overwhelming at times but such a blessing at other times. The lesson that I’ve really learned of late is that I’ve got to let go of my BIG expectations and RELAX a bit. :)

  17. I am a single momma to 5 great kiddos: 2 girls and 3 boys, ages 16, 12, 6 1/2, 4 1/2 & 3. I work full time to take care of them, so I am so thankful for my morning quiet time with God! Sometimes I am sooooo discouraged and it feels like nothing I do is right, but when I see them playing together and loving on each other, it fills my heart. I have been blessed with amazing children and even on the roughest days when I want to pull my hair out, I am so thankful for them. My job is to help them become the wonderful people God created them to be and I am so excited to see them get there. God has great plans for them and I am so thankful I get to be their momma.????

  18. I am a work from home mom of 3 kiddos. Two boys ages 5 and 7 and one girl age 2. We live a crazy, hectic, busy life but also a life full of love. This books looks amazing, just what I need to help me find opportunities to meet with Jesus during my day!

  19. Hi Karen,
I read the sample of your book and found it to be very inspiring. Each verse that you present has a message worth sharing with us moms. They are life lessons that we should pass on to our children. I have one daughter who challenges me every day with her know-it-all attitude. My desire is that we stop to reflect on God’s Word before we say or do anything that is hurtful to others. Your book Pressing Pause would be the ideal companion to get us on the right track. Thank you for all the inspiring messages you share with us in your blog and at Proverbs 31.

  20. I am a stay at home Mom of four kids ages 10, 8, 4 and 2! Whew, each day I feel the life and love sucked out of me by them. I try each night for “me time” to refresh for the next day, but I am often too tired. I have been working hard to see God in all things…could definitely use as much help as possible.

  21. Moms everywhere are going to benefit from this devotional. It looks absolutely chock-full of God’s blessings. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy. Thanks for thinking about mom’s and the stressful lives we all live.

  22. I am a stay at home mother of 3 teenage girls ages 16,14, and 12. There is never a dull moment. Hoping God helps me to raise God fearing and loving women. Its a battle every day in todays society to raise strong, condfident and loving girls with all the girls out there that are so judgmental and mean and just tear eachother down.

  23. I’m a mother of two daughters, ages 8 1/2 and 12. I work full-time outside the home. I get up at 5:00 a.m. and I’m at work at 6:30 a.m. This makes it difficult for first thing in the morning bible or devotional time. I’m curious how this could help. Might be just what I need!

  24. I have a 14th month old and am currently 21 weeks pregnant! I love being a Mom; but there are times I certainly would like too push pause, either to slow things down or just to get a moment of rest! My husband is a chef who works late hours so I am on my own the majority of nights! I work a part time job as Early Childhood Special Educator, so that I can be home with my son the rest of the time. I also run a home fitness business!
