Now, this year for day one, we are kicking off the festivities with the queen of Christmas herself, Candace Cameron Bure. I mean, it just isn’t Christmas without one of her Hallmark Christmas movies, right? To get our series started this year, Candace is gifting one of you with something special from her Dayspring Simply Christmas collection.

But first, here is the idea of the day!

Day 1: The 3 Gift Tradition

When Todd and I became parents over 25 years ago we began the tradition of giving our kids just three gifts for Christmas. Yep…. that is not a typo. I said three. That is all baby Jesus received—remember gold, frankincense and myrrh? In fact, each of them received a gold gift, a frankincense present, and a myrrh package. Here is the concept:

GOLD GIFT

This, like gold, is a highly desired item; precious; maybe even pricey. A big ticket item like a toy, an electronic gadget, tickets to a professional sporting event, or a fancy coffee maker for our adult daughter.

FRANKINCENSE GIFT

Because the real frankincense was burned during prayer and arose heavenward, the gift in this category is something that will draw them closer to God. Perhaps a new Bible, a book series, a leather journal and fancy pen, or tickets to an event or concert.

MYRRH GIFT

This is a burial spice used to cover the whole body. So the myrrh gift does the same thing. It goes on the body. In past years this has been leather boots and a new coat for our daughter, a warm thermal  jumpsuit and camo boots for our son who loves to hunt and eat venison, or maybe a favorite professional sports team jersey or pair of tennis shoes a child really wanted.

Since our kids knew the number of items was limited, they didn’t expect oodles of gifts—just three. And we also included them when we shopped for a less-fortunate family we adopted each year.  We also took them along when we delivered the gifts to the family. It was good for them to see that we used some of the money we would have spent on more gifts for them to purchase for a family who might not be able to afford any gifts.

The three gift tradition. Try it out this year!

And now, here’s Candace’s fabulous giveaway!

  10. Hi my only traditional gift is an angel I receive each year or buy in loving memory of my daughter Rachel Joy Killian. I was 7 months gestation when she awoke in heaven. I got to know a little of her likes through the belly but didn’t get to meet her alive. My favorite thing is to place these angels on my tree. They do get harder to find each year so when someone in the family surprises me , it makes my Christmas.

  11. Since my girls were little we always give them pj’s on Christmas eve to wear on Christmas morning, and now that they are both married we have expanded this to our new son in laws!

  12. My significant other and I have been dating four years. We were set up on a blind date by his sister and a mutual friend. We are both 50+ and divorced having each been married 25+ years . We each went thru difficult divorces. When our kids first met, they hit it off like they’d known each other their entire lives. Our kids are adults, now having children of their own and live all over the US. We plan a destination each year and get an airbnb for all of us to stay together. The kids have shared that Christmas is not about gifts, it’s about being together. We have a blast when we’re all together. This has become our family tradition gift now.

  13. We started doing a Christmas Eve gift for the kids containing Christmas pjs, a Christmas book or movie and popcorn or candy!

  14. Not a specific gift but we have started a tradition with our kiddos: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. ??

  15. We always buy our kids ( who are older teens now) pajamas to wear on Christmas Day. They open it Christmas Eve and wear them for the night. We also buy them calendars…EVERY YEAR!!

The kids have shared that Christmas is not about gifts, it’s about being together. We have a blast when we’re all together.

  17. On Christmas Eve we read the Christmas story. Then our boys open one gift , which is a pair of pajamas. They go up stairs and put them on. When they come down we ooh and ahh and take pictures of course.

  18. We always get new jammies! One year our youngest (she was 8 at the time) found our son’s wallet that he had lost so she wrapped it and put it under the tree (1 week before Christmas). On Christmas Eve, he opened his gift and said “I’ve been looking for this”! She said, “I found it and thought it was a good gift!” Lol! So I guess if a loved one lost something and you find it, wrap it. Lol!!

  19. My mother and I have a Christmas gift tradition. Each year we give each other a box of Chocolate Covered Cherries. She’s 94 and lives with us, but I still make sure we both have a box under the tree to and from each other.

  20. Growing up, my Mom always bought us an ornament or two each year so that when it was time for us to officially move out we had our own collection for a tree. She continued this tradition until she passed away. I still add to my collection each year and have begun ornament collections for each of my children.
