DIY Patriotic Painted Ball Jars

Easy DIY Patriotic Painted Jars at #LoveYourLifeFriday on karenehman.comDo you need something to spruce up your table for theย 4th of July?ย

These Patriotic Painted Ball Jars are the perfect thing!

I started out with three Ball Jars and painted one blue and two white. Two coats each.

Then, I taped off sections, to create stripes and painted two more coats of red on the white jars and random white stars on the blue jars.

After about 24 hours when the paint was good and dry, I sanded the jars lightly to remove some of the paint and reveal that classic Ball Jar. I love this vintage feel!
To seal the jars and prevent the paint from chipping off, I sprayed a light coat of this Rust-Oleum clear lacquer.
I love how versatile these jars can be. Here I played them up with some festive American things I already own. This would be a great project for kids to help you with too! And it is something you will enjoy for years to come.
You don’t have to wait for the 4th to pull them out, the red and white stripe is cute just on its own!
Think Memorial Day, Labor Day or what about opening ceremonies for the Olympics!

  1. Karen, I got to tell you this title gave me a chuckle and made me look. I thought they were “paint ball jars” to keep “paint balls in”. I’ve lived with a teenage boy too long.
    BTW: The jars are great.

  2. I LOVE these jars and plan to make them with my kids this weekend or next! Other cool thing I like to do with canning jars: 1. Paint a design, but don’t cover the entire jar. If I were going to use the patriotic theme, I would paint the red stripes and blue background. I’d leave the white stripes and stars unpainted. Then carefully drill a small hole (craft stores should be able to show you how to do it safely)
in the back of each jar and run a set of white Christmas tree-style lights into the jars. Make sure the lights fill the jar evenly and go all the way to the top. You could even spring for a set of twinkling lights for the blue jar! 2. Paint the same design, but this time use white glow-in-the-dark paint for the stars and white stripes. They will look great outside all day, and when the sun goes they will still look amazing! And because they were out in the sun all day, the glow should last an extra long time.
